I think it's kinda funny the way folks pan Ballistic (which is, essentially, a Comic Book "plot"* put on film) yet don't seem to realize (or admit) the same level of awfulness when hollywood does it with a better known franchise.

And yes, Ballistic is from an all but unknown comic series that never made the bigtime and fell apart after only a few issues - they changed the names and a few other bits, but it's damn near a direct plot lift.

Speakin of which, I seriously wouldn't mind seeing an animated adaptation of Poison Elves, so long as they get crispin freeman to voice Lusiphur...

*Oh, yah - I've long held the opinion that the folks at DC and Marvel wouldn't know a solid plot if you fired it up their arse on a nuclear powered rocket, and even then they'll spend more time trying to wrench it into knots that would make a soap opera writer groan instead of actually telling the freakin STORY!!!

Even Joss is not immune to the comic book worlds garbaging of decent plots, I mighta liked Runaways, if they hadn't got completely stupid with it.

Which is, why I went to reading Manga instead.
You don't *need* a celtic knotwork plot to tell a good story, and you damn sure shouldn't milk a story till even your fans hate you - knowing WHEN TO STOP is as important as how you tell the tale, and while Manga is not immune to this, it's hella better than the trash passing for american comic books these days.

I have no problem admitting Hollywood has made some fairly bad comic films.
Spiderman 3? Check.
Wolverine? (half-check. Some things were alright. Overall, not so much.)
X-Men 3? Check.
Aeon Flux (I think it was an anime...)? Check.

You'll find that a lot of people have no problem admitting when Hollywood do something wrong.

And comics, like manga, just depend on you finding something you like. Sure, there's a lot of crappy stuff in stores, but there is also a lot of great stuff. I personally dislike most of the manga I've read, just not my style, but I wouldn't attack the entire industry.

What did you like about it?

Some of it was almost 'so bad in a good way' like when emo Spidey is walking down the street dancing...but other parts (and the way they handled Venom) were just annoying. Although Venom did look pretty cool, I'll give them that.

Problem is, the US Comic Book industry seems hellfire determined to make *sure* to get that last 10% down to the quality of the other 90%, no matter what it takes - even the "best" stuff I've seen was downright cringeworthy, with a few noteable exceptions like Poison Elves and Transmetropolitan.

Manga/Anime has it's crap too, boy does it *ever*, but dredging that last 10% is actually worth the trouble, finding such gems as Black Lagoon, Captain Tylor, and on occasion stuff that's downright art, though tastes may vary, obviously - especially since most of the stuff I relegate to "art" isn't exactly happy stuff.

Besides, there's really only seven stories in the world, and it's all in how you tell em anyways.

S'why I loved Firefly so much, it isn't the convolution of the plot, or how long you can milk it, it's HOW YOU TELL THE STORY, I didn't care much for Joss's other stuff, even the BDM, but Firefly was prime storytelling.

PS - Oh, yah, I got dragged to some of those hideous spidey flicks, imho, the only redeeming quality (go ahead and laugh) was that they found the PERFECT J. Jonah Jameson...
Was the only thing that kept me from trying to asphixiate myself with the popcorn bucket, I tellya.
