My Fave's include some authors that don't post anymore or very rarely like Screw the Alliance and Hotpoint.

Makes my day when Slumming, Jane0904, Angellemarcs, TuJiaoZuo, blackbeanie, badkarma00, cbsteve or GorramitGirl post something new.

I read a lot of fanfiction here and I rarely find one I do not care for.

I like to just keep refreshing the preview blurbs at the top of the BSR page. I've found quite a few good stories that way. the other thing I do is start going through using the alphabetical list.

Brian

I've done that too!

I've been through A through L, and T through Z. Slowly making my way.

Speaking of which (I thought we were talking about still active authors), intopaper wrote some nice ones, I seem to recall goldy did too.

ScrewtheAlliance has some amazing stuff, really funny, lots of action, though I like the third unfinished story best.

I prefer canon pairings and hetfic because in my wishful way of thinking, that's how Joss would have continued the series. I like fic that shows progress in the crew's lives in overcoming personal obstacles and political changes in the 'verse. I love serials and continuations of fics because they draw you in and give you something to come back for. I want to see the characters grow and get on with their lives and circumstances, or I want to read fic that is part of the established timeline to zero in on something canon.

I started reading the BSR 4 years ago by starting on the very first fic written in the archives and working my way backwards. It took awhile. But I learned that way what I liked and what I couldn't accept as canon, and now I can stick with what appeals to me as Firefly fic. It amazes me how one show can spawn so many different points of view, but that is the beauty of the true creative genius Joss used when he created the show.

There's some amazing fic and amazingly talented authors in the BSR. Hawkmoth, Maystone, Kaynara Kacidilla, Browncoat 2X2 haven't been mentioned yet. There are a lot of people who moved on and even more that came in. I too love reading the blurbs at the top and have been reminded of many wonderful fic that way. But some of the most fun I've had is to see a new writer get started and get better and better as they grow and learn how to be a writer.

The biggest stipulation I have when choosing a fic to read is that the BDH's have to be the central characters. Anything that degrades them as characters or that I can't imagine Joss doing in a movie or TV I avoid.

Ooh yeah, 2x2. I wonder when she's going to continue her The Slower Path series?

I loved to read SoulOfSerenity's original character series 'Destiny' and 'Vengeance.'

Although, as a writer, I tend not to read too much fan fic as a rule.

I used to write horror series, but under a different penname (CosmicFugitive). 'Schism' and 'Resurgence' were the respective titles.

Although, the horror section of the BSR is probably the most overlooked imho (as well as the comedy section.) Which is odd, as there are elements of horror within Firefly; the Reavers, Miranda, Hands of Blue, Niska's torture, The Academy, River's insanity etc...

Horror and comedy have similar writing mechanics (the lead up to the punchline/big scare.)

I take my hat off to the writers who deal with these genres, because it's not an easy task. There are some imaginative pieces in the horror and comedy section respectively.

I can still recall the comedy fic where Jayne was transformed into a fairy.

Anywho.. I thought that I'd mention the unsung writers of the sections beyond 'general.'

Please check them out.

Most of the folks posting so far will probably not enjoy my stuff, but you never know.
My personal fave is SpaceAnjl. She's got the witty repartee down cold, as well as the character's voices, and sticks to the Jossiness.

Then there's the Frecklets series. I'm not normally one for short stories that are mostly about sex, but these are good! (No, I do not read slash intentionally either. I try to avoid it, as I've yet to see any that was more than author wish fulfillment. Show me a good one with a plot and I'll read it.)

I like hitting the art section too. There's some surprisingly good visual stuff out there.

I attempt to skim through everything at least in the BSR to see what/how everyone's writing.

Not a huge fan of pairing everyone off like an ark (River with anyone of the original crew tends to feel squicky to me and I more often than not loosely skim her parts). Platonist is right, after awhile it can become recycled plots and quite predictable**. Though I do read the pairing/kidfluff! from time to time, as that's exactly how I started off ficcing on other fandoms so I feel some kinship there. (plus once in awhile, a girl needs some fluff)

Slash doth not interest me for the most part. However here due to Joss's establishment in the Verse that sexuality is viewed with more a more progressive set of eyes, I tend to be more open towards certain characters exhibiting bisexuality or homosexuality. Open means I'll give it a shot, doesn't mean I'll make it past the first paragraph.

Favorite Authors? ScrewTheAlliance, Mal4Prez, Girlfan's Even Roses Have Thorns and The Dino Tales by ManicGiraffe (wee! someone loves that too) are my current all time faves that I can right off the bat remember. Though I must admit I read the first few chapters of cliomuse's fic and I NEED to catch up on that.

For all of the great fanfiction I read, I will probably read twice the amount of truly horrific fic (spanning various fandoms, Prison Break fic probably is the worst of the worst). As my friend said in a discussion once "Bad fic is sort of like everyone's fixation with reality TV. You know it's bad for you, you know it's terrible, but it's amusing as hell and you can't help yourself." Therefore bad fanfic is my reality TV.

**I fully admit that I have paired the crew up some and hath introduced adorable chubby little plot devices, however I'd like to think I'm taking Joss' 'The Family You Make' direction with all of that. That, and not every relationship shall weather through the storm that is life

Your Indian Pirate Lord,
Ash

No need to apologize for enjoying future family fic, Ash, because you write it exceptionally well, it’s a little quirky and you've yet to have gone ark as far as I can remember. I'm warning you though, when you pair Book up with Inara because they’re both unattached and can pray together I may change my opinion and give you a gentle reminder, like WTF are you doing:)

Maybe I should go check out the horror section now... like suggested.

I love the fics of many of the writers who have already been mentioned, but I wanted to chime in because I haven't seen hawksmoth on LJ mentioned. She hasn't posted fic in a while, but her stories are really exceptional! I had a major, major squee! moment early on when she complimented one of my chapters :)

No surprise, M/I is the pairing that I am devoted to, the reason I started writing. I am delighted to read romantic fluff - but then I love the angst as well, it's so true to the difficult 'verse Joss has our heroes living in.

I'm very much into CharlieBZ and Chrisk these days. Both of them are writing very, very good and well-plotted stories. Of course that's just me and my preference for plot-driven fic over pairing-driven fic. :P (Actually, as many people already know, I'll read pretty much anything that isn't Rayne. ) Regretfully I haven't gotten round to reading Mal4Prez yet, although I have it on good authority that she's one of the best - there's just so ruttin' much to get through with some of these people! (Like me, but we're not talking about me.)

Schooner, though, is another one of the best. It's a shame he doesn't post here more often - he has an excellent command of writing, a very good style, and he writes the best River I've ever seen in fanfic. I just howled when I read his 'River's Letter to Santa' - it was spot-dead-on.
