A metaphor for the plot of Firefly. Yet another example of the evil influence of the media.

What Would Mal Do?

Quite a week for voting. Jericho fans voted 10,522 times, while Browncoats cast 11,115 votes. That's twenty times more votes than were being cast each week four months ago. Now where did all those votes come from? Most of them came from fans who had access to multiple IP addresses. Every PC connected to the Internet has a unique IP address. Most voting systems keep track of the IP address of voters, and limit the votes from that address. There are several ways you can work this system. We've all heard of people with access to an office full of PCs with different IP addresses, going around and voting several times. Those still using dial-up get a new IP address each time they log on. So do many broadband users. But the most common method of inflating your voting power is to use a free proxy server. These services provide a way for people to surf the web without revealing their IP address (which can be used to track down who you are).
Go to a site like www.tech-faq.com/proxy.shtml and click on one of the proxy sites listed there. When the site loads, enter www.tvtally.com/shows/weeklytop.php?top=50 and vote. You'll probably find that your votes won't take via many of these proxy sites. That's because some Jericho or Firefly fan has already used that proxy site in the past six hours. When you do find a proxy site you can vote via, bookmark it. Continue for as long as you can manage until you have a bunch of proxy IP addresses you can use every six hours to vote a lot. Using this technique is time consuming, but it can, and has, pumped up the vote.
There are some illegal ways to pump up the vote (using botnets and such), but I'm not even going to discuss those. I don't believe anyone is using botnets or hacking to increase the vote. No, most of it appears to be good old fashioned gathering of multiple IP addresses using legal methods.

We are up 841 votes on Jericho in the last seven days.

We gained 593 votes on Jericho in the week ending May 18 (-1,048 the previous week). Overall the total vote at the beginning of the week is Jericho 78,369 (67,847 last week), Firefly 77,442 (66,327 last week). In January, we were over 2,000 votes behind. But a year ago, we were ahead. Over the last few months, we have been closing the gap.
If you turn off cookies on your browser, when you go to TVTally, you can vote up to three (used to be six) times (and for more than one show, or all for one show). You can also vote more than once in six hours (unpredictable, tends to happen early in the day, and after 6 PM). Some consider this cheating, some don't. Either you're a cookie monster, or you ain't.

At Stargate ( http://stargate-news.com/sci-fi-poll-best-in-science-fiction.html) we are at 43.1 (43.1 yesterday) percent today, and 1365 votes, for the best SciFi movie. Vote for Firefly as well as Serenity (where we have 26.3 percent of the vote and Red Dwarf has 23.1, versus 26.3 and 23.2 yesterday). The Dwarves are stirring less than we are (with us at 7828 and them at 6889).

At BBC ( http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6517155.stm) today we are; Serenity 42.70% Star Wars 29.20% Blade Runner 16.93% Planet of the Apes 1.80% The Matrix 9.36% 43134 Votes Cast

In the last 24 hours there were FOUR votes. Sad.

Back on September 5th it was Serenity 39.53% Star Wars 30.83% Blade Runner 17.87% Planet of the Apes 1.90% The Matrix 9.87% , with 40635 Votes Cast

Still weird numbers but there is an amusement factor to consider.
