"I assume your referring to Cheney's obsession with keeping his family, staff and the American people safe. To bad Biden doesn't seem to care about the same."

You mean Biden doesn't care about keeping Cheney and Cheney's family and staff safe ? Or did you mean that the American people would fit into the bunker ?

What did you mean ? It came out all scrambly.

Because "undisclosed location" sounds good. It sounds serious. It sounds like in the middle of an attack its all going to be ok because somewhere out there the folks in charge are running the show.

Somehow saying the VP is "in the basement" does not have have the same ring to it.

Ya know, I hadn't even thought about it like that. That does make sense. And I agree, undisclosed location does sound more confidence inspiring than 'in the basement', lol.

My honest opinion of Biden is that he's a little bit crazy. Not a River-lunatic..no no. I mean, juuuust a little bit. And there's good reason. The poor guys wife and 1-year old daughter were killed horribly. That would unhinge anyone.

Joe's got a proven track record of mis-stepping politcally by saying two kinds of things:
1. Slightly offbeat stuff/bad jokes.
2. What he's actually thinking at the moment.

He reminds me of Admrial Stockdale, the man who ran as VP for Ross Perot in 1992. That guy did the same things and for similar reasons, he was locked up with McCain and others in the Hanoi Hilton and tortured for 6 years.

I don't blame Biden for his behavior. Per a line from his Wiki article, after his wife and girl were killed he said I'd walk around seedy neighborhoods at night when I thought there was a better chance of finding a fight. I had not known I was capable of such rage. I felt God had played a horrible trick on me.

Like I said, I don't blame him. What does worry me however is why the Democratic Party wanted to nominate him. Everyone knows that a VP is picked to bring to a ticket the qualities the main candidate lacks. Example: Palin was picked because she was a woman in a time after Hillary lost by a hair. Joe was picked because he's a Good-time-charlie. There were plenty of other Dems that could have brought a feisty experienced atmosphere to counter-balance Barack's lack of experience. But why Joe? I really just don't get it. I'll admit that it can be refreshing to get a leader who actually says what he thinks, and we've certainly had a few over the years, (Teddy Rosevelt, Truman) but those guys also had a little wisdom mixed with their fire to know when to walk slower (TR: walk softly and carry a big stick) Joe scares me in that if he ever assumed the role of President he might say crazy stuff on a more focused world stage.

Ah well. What will be, will be.

Everythings okay now! Biden's aide reports that the VP was merely describing a guest bedroom at the historic Naval Observatory, the official residence of the Vice President, when he described a tour given him by a naval officer that included 'a masive steel door masking the entrance way to the area where Dick Cheney spent his 'undisclosed location time' in the aftermath of 9/11. Good thing there's always an aide around to clear up what Bite'n 'really' means.

I wasn't aware of that, at least I don't remember ever hearing it. And, considering how much he derided HObamaman during the primary it was a surprise to me to, in all honesty. And I agree that something like that is enough to make anyone a little off.

And I remember James Stockdale. I also remember how he was mercilessly hounded for his 'odd' behavior by certain other people in political circles. A shame, considering what he'd been through. But there's a history in this country among some to denigrate the sacrifices made by our veterans.

Funny, using your 'freedom of speech' to vilify the very men, and women, who work and often die to protect that freedom, ain't it.

It's almost like. . .irony.

Does anyone remember the secret Cold War hideaway for Congress etc at the Greenbriar resort in West Virginia? It was secret for many years until it was uncovered and now I think it's on their tour.

I'm sure there are many "hiddy holes" we don't know about all over the DC, Virginia and Maryland area.

And I just hope for our sakes that Biden is "crazy like a fox."

I actually do remember that. It had been, I think, a resort at one time, is that right? I can't remember that part for sure, it's been along time since I read about it.

Seems like part of what I read was that it also served as a 'resting place' so to speak, for congressional and goverment types who had come near to cracking over the stress of the Cold War days, but I may be confusing that with something else.

Well, the thing about Biden being a little "off" because of hard life experiences...

You know, that's prettymuch the ONLY way a politician learns empathy or compassion whatsoever, yes ?

Those among us who have fallen the lowest, the deepest, and somehow survived and climbed back out of the death spiral, despite their quirks are some of the most human, compassionate people out there, because they KNOW, in a way that cannot be ignored or forgotten, what the darkness holds, and when they see others sliding to the void they're the first to throw the rope.

And when they see someone else pushin folk over the edge for power or gain, they've no respect for em - believe me, I wholeheartedly believe that if Cheney ever stuck his neck out far enough (which he won't, cause he's a fearful, cowardly, paranoid little git) that Biden would make his ass *dissappear*, and quicklike - remember this is a guy who has "friends in low places" which most politicians do not, and intel contacts with the same sorta folk.

So don't take the man for an idiot, were he that, he'd be dead - this is a guy whos been to the bottom of the rabbit hole and back again, that *changes* a person, if they come back at all.

He might be kooky, inarticulate and seem on first glance a little dim, but if you look at his life, history and political record (note the fact that for a congressman he's dirt freakin poor) this is a guy who puts HIS ethics first, and while they are different than ours, and on many matters I am certain many of his constituents disagree with em, at least he HAS ethics.

There's more to it, but I have neither the time nor inclination to go into it, beyond pointing out that one reason he escapes notice is also because he is like me, a puppetmaster, and does his best work by proxy.

It cannot be said enough, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to endlessly repeat it

It wasn't a resting place. It was an underground bunker with dorms, a hosptial, meeting rooms etc.

"In the late 1950s, the U.S. government approached The Greenbrier for assistance in creating a secret emergency relocation center to house Congress in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. The classified, underground facility, dubbed "Project Greek Island",[6] was built at the same time as the West Virginia Wing (an above-ground addition to the hotel), from 1959 to 1962. For thirty years, The Greenbrier owners maintained an agreement with the federal government that, in the event of an international crisis, the entire resort property would be conveyed to government use, specifically as the emergency location for the legislative branch.

The underground facility contained a dormitory, kitchen, hospital, and a broadcast center for members of Congress. The latter had changeable seasonal backdrops to appear as if members of Congress were broadcasting from Washington, D.C.[citation needed] A 100-foot radio tower was installed 4.5 miles away for these broadcasts. The convention center, used by The Greenbrier guests for business meetings, was actually a disguised workstation area for members of Congress complete with hidden, 30-ton blast doors. The walls of the bunker were made of reinforced concrete designed to withstand a nuclear blast in Washington, D.C.

The center was maintained by government workers posing as hotel audiovisual employees, and operated under a dummy company named Forsythe Associates. Many of these same workers are now employed by the hotel and, for a time, gave guided tours. The complex is still maintained by The Greenbrier, and the facility remains much as it was in 1992, when the secret was revealed in the national press. While almost all of the furnishings were removed following the decommissioning of the bunker, the facility now has similar period furnishings to approximate what the bunker looked like while it was still in operation. Two of the original bunks in the dormitories remain.

AT&T provided phone service for both The Greenbrier Hotel and the bunker. All calls placed from the bunker were routed through the hotel's switchboard to make it appear as if they originated from the hotel itself. The communications center in the bunker today contains representatives of three generations of telephone technology used.

Although the bunker was kept stocked with supplies for 30 years, it was never actually used as an emergency location, even during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The bunker's existence was not acknowledged until The Washington Post revealed it in a 1992 story; immediately after the Post story, the government decommissioned the bunker.

The facility has since been renovated and is also used as a data storage facility for the private sector. It

Yeah, if only Cheney would have had an aide around to explain what he "really meant" by shooting his friend in the face. Hell, if only SOMEONE had been around to talk to the press or police about it, 'cause Cheney sure wasn't making himself available...
