This just in from Ain't It Cool News... well, from Sunday, actually.

The Hollywood Reporter’s James Hibberd reports that NBC's secret-agent comedy “Chuck,” now with kung-fu grip, will be back for a third season.
The series, co-created by “O.C.” mastermind Josh Schwartz, reportedly had to endure big budget cuts before NBC would grant the order. (Hopefully they’ll lay off some of the Buy More staff before Adam Baldwin.)
Whew! I can stop holding my breath now
I agree that if budget cuts were mandatory then getting rid of the bulk of the Buy More crew is the best way to go. Get rid of Lester, Jeff, Big Mike and Emmett (though I HATE to see Tony Hale leave) even though it's regretable. But for goodness sake, keep Morgan around! And Ellie, Awesome and Poppa Bartowski, of course.

Mal: You think she'll hold together?
Zoë: She's torn up plenty, but she'll fly true.
Mal: Could be bumpy.
Zoë: Always is

Laying off the Buy More staff is what I am afraid of. It certainly would cut costs. They are about half the cast. I wonder if they will get rid of his sister now that she is married. That would reduce the cast even further. Will find out when they start filming the next seaon and see who shows up at the lunch wagon outside the studio.

No one in the know has said this yet, but I think it very likely we won't see Scott Bakula again. His paycheck would be pretty big I would think.
I can do without Jeffster, but I want them to figure out a way for Morgan and Anna to stay around although with the Intersect 2.0 making him more capable as a real spy, Chuck has no reason to be at the Buy More.

This is interesting.
It seems that a first season is normally about 13 episodes, and subsequent seasons are about 20ish.
Dollhouse was renewed, but only for 13 episodes and a lower budget.
Chuck had a short season 1, a normal season 2, but was renewed for a 3rd SHORT season, with a lower budget.
Is this the networks' way of making an effort to 'reach out' to that small but at the same time substantial 'fanboy' market, though without risking too much money?
Could this be the start of a change in the way they do things?
Rather than just say 'meh' to shows that didn't bust blocks and cancel it, they give it a second (though challenging) chance to survive?

I think you're probably right. On the one hand, Bakula hasn't been burning up the big screen lately... on the other hand, he IS a known actor, and kind of a touchstone for a certain group of geeks... So does he command a premium price, or is he just happy to be working? Enquiring minds want to know!

I think the BuyMore is gone. I think Jeffster and Big Mike are gone, maybe to reappear once in a while. I think Emmet Milbarge is history, as are Bryce Larkin and Dr. Jill Roberts. Sorry, but I think those actors (Tony Hale, Matthew Bomer, Jordana Brewster) are probably adding too much to the budget for what they bring to the show. Look for more stripped-down plots, less big-budget action, fewer helicopters and explosions, fewer large gatherings in lavish settings. In short, look for *less* of just about everything - and expect MORE out of the writing and the main characters.
If you see big-name guest stars like Chevy Chase or Scott Bakula, it will be more along the lines of a nod to their audience, or just because that star loves the show and wants to help out and does the show for scale or some pittance of a paycheck.
At least, that's my take.

Excellent news! Glad to hear Chuck is coming back for a 3rd season. Wonder how "short" a season and how bad budget cuts will hurt the quality of the show.
