there are multiple references in the show to the food being mostly protein or almost all protein. does this mean that someday atkins is going to take over the world? is atkins a subsidiary of blue sun?

obviously, i am joking. i assume there are supplements that people take to avoid malnutrition and perhaps protein foodstuffs are just the cheapest thing around since fresh fruits and veggies are apparently available.

i'm pretty sure that its not just pure protien, but that it is a schmorgashbord (sp?) or different foods and nutriets all mushed together...kind of like the food pills the Jetson's had.

Maybe they have a really long rediculous name, and so everybody just calls it Protein because its shorter.

I also think everybody eats protein, because it is what is rationed out by the government and so they don't have to pay for it, unless the Alliance is running late (and it probably is quite frequently) then they just have to buy it...but by the sounds of it, it costs a pretty penny... as is demonstrated in Serenity. If it was so cheap, Badger wouldn't have thought it was worth the trouble to have it picked up by Mal.

chances are that when they speak of 'protein' their are talking about soy protein. soy beans are easy to grow, put up with a varity of climates and more importantly enrich the soil making it suitable for other crops. if you think about soybeans are probable the number one crop for worlds freshly teraformed, ones with short growing seasons and worlds with poor soil (which seams like most of them). it can also be used to make many non-food items such as ink, diesel fuel and waxes.
Food-wise soy beans are high in protein and can be processed into cooking oil, flour, 'milk', and a meat-like product that is 'interesting' in flavor. which also explains how Saffron found all the ingredients for bao in Serenity's kitchen.

you know, i bet you are right. there is more than one mention of soy protein in the show. that is the stuff that mal wants to take off the other ship in Bushwhacked. good call!

Maybe they are all on the Atkins diet.

I mean, they do seem kinda on the thin side. Maybe in the future Dr. Atkins becomes a beloved figure in science and medicine and his diet program is simply how people learn to eat. This makes them happier, healthier, and more robust right up until their death from heart disease.

plus when Kaylee talk about the cake in Out of Gas, she says,"Couldn't get a hold of no flour, so it's mostly protein. In fact, it's pretty much what we just had for supper. But I tried to get the frosting as chocolatey tasting as possible, so...". if used on it's own, soy flour has alot of protien which would make a cake kind of chewy/dense. plus it has a flavor that is hard to cover, explaining why the frosting is only so chocolatey.

a interesting side note. as far as i can remember (and i could be wrong about this) there is never any bread shown in the series. this would make prefect sense as only rye/wheat flour has enough glulten to allow for yeast risen breads. if the planets of the Allience are primarily dependant on soy beans, yeast breads would be a rare thing indeed.

I remember at the end of one of the episodes (I can't remember which one, which is driving me crazy) there is a scene of the entire crew sitting down to dinner, and you see River stealing what looks like a roll off of Jayne's plate. I remembered it because I thought it was cute. That's the only instance I can think of.

bao is a traditional Chinese dumpling, that are steamed. they're about the size of a dinner roll, white and in the center is usually pork, but anything can be out in them. the kind i've have at a dim sum place and i can buy at home taste not un-like a sloppy joe in wonder bread.
