The theme tune is fine as it is but it'd be great if it did play at the end. There's never really a theme tune for the start of a movie is there? Gawd! I'm gonna take all the family along to see this. I'm the only one who's seen the show so far. I'll make browncoats out of 'em if it's the last thing I do.

And Universal is now owned by NBC. There's one fly in this ointment. Joss is still operating under the terms of an exclusive made-for-tv deal with 20th-Century Fox studios. Universal could not produce a Firefly television series until that deal expires. This is the reason Nathan said to expect perhaps more movies but not a return to television any time soon.

I'm sure Universal will be more than happy to show all Firefly movies on SciFi, however.

That song has to be in the movie. Never have I heard a theme song that didn't have the title of the show in it that so concisely defined and imagined the show I was about to watch. Even when I first saw "The Train Job" way back in 2002, I was iffy. But not about that song. That song is one of my favorites of all time. I'd like to hear an expanded version, but I won't say that I wouldn't be more than a little hurt if the song wasn't in the movie. I was thinking about this the other day.

Then again, how shiny would it be to see the movie in the theater, the song comes on, and you begin to identify browncoats because they're singing along like it was the national anthem.

Mmm-hmm. And Alex Rodriguez has to wait another seventeen years 'til his deal with the Rangers is done, before he can play with the Yankees, too.

I'd suspect that Joss and the cast see this as an opportunity to make a (well-deserved) break into movies. If the first movie is successful, a big portion of the cast may be too busy doing 'other things' to participate in an on-going TV show, no matter how much we love it. Maybe they do have to wait 5 years before they can bring the series back, but then again, maybe...

Would anyone begrudge JW or the cast for hoping for success? Not I. I suspect that Nathan's analysis was correct: We'll get three movies, if we're lucky.

Maybe when the film blows the lid off theater attendance records (and it WILL!) 20th Century Fox wil plant their lips firmly on JW's posterior and give him carte blanche to do a return to tv, as long as it makes them money.

Hopefully, by then, there may be an executive in that den of theives who knows quality when they see it instead of all this "reality" crap. Who knows, it may even be somebody that can actually use a computer and can see the fan base out there (read $$$)as well as the potential for new viewers. Such an enlightened individual would be familiar with the proverb about the goose that lays the golden eggs and treat it accordingly.

It's not as if JW is new or unproven in this business. Just hand him the resources, get out of his way, watch the coffers fill up and enjoy. After all, for them, it's all about the money.

Am I being too optimistic??

One thing we can hope for is a firefly soundtrack!
That would be very Shiny!

Also, I am pretty sure that Joss is not going to do what we will expect with this movie.
I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the fact that there will be more of the Crew to experience, but we must understand that he is basically "Starting over" with this franchise.
Having to continue pleasing his core audience while bringing up new fans is going to be quite a challenge, and those of us purists will have to adapt as well, and expect some things to stay the same, yet some things to be completely different.

So in that light, I could see the original firefly theme not being in the movie at all, or even a nod to it, but it might be added to the movie soundtrack just as a kindness.

Either way it goes I will enjoy seeing it with my wife about 10 friggin' times!

I would say that the initial weekend business by Firefly fans going multiple times might be at most $25 million. From the general audience, let's hope for $10 million more. That would equal the production budget recouped in a weekend and would be fantastic on a relative scale. But a movie based on a defunct television show without any major stars is never going to do the $80 to $100 million opening that we're seeing this summer. There's no way it's going to blow the lid off attendance records.

It's also not FOX executives who need to decide to produce more television episodes--it's the 20th-Century Fox studios. I suppose one scenario might be that a Universal-allied network like SciFi might strike a deal with 20th to broadcast new tv episodes or miniseries or movies of the week.

However, from everything I've read in the trade papers, the deal for Universal to get to make Firefly features was that Firefly not return as a television show until that option was up.

So, yes, I think you're being too optimistic. On the other hand, I never thought we'd see a feature film in a million years, so ya never know.
