In my humble opinion the fact that Kaylee was gettin' it on just makes sense, He Wasn't ugly and after all everyone else can have a turn so why can't she?
People have sex, or at least intend to...well except for Book, but we all know that he just redirects his energy...
Which brings me to an observation....
Part of the fantastic writing on the show involves the freedom that sex is given.
It is an understood activity without people coming off as trashy, because it is handled as naturally as possible, and it seems like people(and I am just basing this off the crew) are more open with sex, talkin about it and what not.
Hell, Jayne has no problem lettin' everyone know what he has planned "I'll be in my bunk."
Also, in Heart of Gold, did anyone else catch that slang for Gay...sly...now that is a good one

Jayne don't care. He would say "I'll be in my bunk." to his momma. Then again, maybe not. You don't get knitted wool caps with a pom pom if you're a bad boy to your mother. But, it works on Kaylee. You're right, and I hadn't thought that Mal had hired Kaylee because she was cute (I would). It not the kind of thing he would do. There's only been one character Mal has shown absolute love and affection for and that's Serenity. I don't think he would hire someone to take care of her based on their looks. But, this scene quashed all that anyways. He hired Kaylee in an embarassing moment. But, I don't think the sex was all that great for her anyways. I mean, while she was on her back earlier, she was looking at engine parts.

Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

I think that scene says us alot about Kaylee. Kaylee wasn't embarassed that Mal busted in on them. Mal was, but Kaylee was just all, "oh, don't mind me, hi, howya doin'?" She didn't run squeaking for cover, like lots of chicks would have, she didn't try to "accidentally" flash Mal or give him any knowing smirks, as a girl like Saffron would have, and she didn't even try to apologize. It's one of the things I love about her.

The strawberry is the key...I know most of you weren't around to notice, but the strawberry was *the* 1970s all purpose flavor/fragrance, and Kaylee has a real 1970s hippie vibe.
She likes cute boys, engines, and really likes cute boys in close conjunction with engines...kind of like the Mile High Club. Or indeed the proverbial Farmer's Daughter and Traveling Salesman. But as for Good Goats...let's not go there.
