Well, I thought it was intriguing. This episode was a fairly good crime drama, but then you add the unexpected memories turning up... And the additional layer of those memories having originally belonged to someone else, but Echo experiencing them like they're her own... I think both this story, and the manner of telling it, could only be told with Dollhouse.
It's not too funny right now, but remember, we haven't really seen Echo interact with any of the other Actives. I get the impression that they're very childlike in their wiped state, and that's where we might get the potential for some lighthearted humour.

The thing everyone should be aware of about tonight's episode is that it was re-tooled at FOX's request. If the episode seems serious and disjointed, it's because of that reason.
In interviews, etc., Joss and cast have made it known that the 1st episode isn't what they originally had in mind. Episodes 2 thru 5 are standalone episodes and from episodes 7 on, we'll start seeing a bigger story arc.

I will give it another chance but from this first episode I don't like what I see... I really don't like 'Dushku at all. She is not very good. This part would of been perfect for Miss Glau.
"And I think calling him that is an insult to the psychotic lowlife community."

There must be some reason that Joss wrote this part especially for her. We've only hit the premise of the story and the character, not the depth. I'm willing to wait.

at least give it through the first 6 episodes, because Joss has said that he kicked major ass w/his 6th episode!
But personally I enjoyed this first one a lot...
I thought it was exciting with some nice suggestions about underlying themes of identity, consequences, and even some interesting La Femme Nikita over-tones....
of course I have to confess that I was thrilled just to see the 'grrr argh' at the end! LOL

Well, I'll certainly give it a chance given the pedigree, and Eliza Dushku is no3 on my all-time hot chick list (behind Jennifer Connelly and Mrs. Reynolds) but...the first episode did not impress me.
The premise is fine, but...a hostage negotiator? It just didn't strike me as the occupation someone would be calling the Dollhouse to employ. Hooker? Assassin? Spy? All reasonable. Hostage negotiator...not so much.
There's suspension of disbelief, and then there's "this makes absolutely no sense."

I would have liked to have seen the first ep. as it had been intended...Honestly, it felt like like the Train Job as a first ep. of Firelfly...interesting, kinda' good, a lot of potential but not sure where it's leading.
It had the pacing and suspence of a CSI ep. That's great, I suppose for fox execs, but some of the deep concepts that would have hooked me were glossed over...got the impression that it will be a show like "medium" where the protag. is emotionally envolved in each case but w/ a sinister twist (which I know was not the original concept).
