Sleep is nice, but I have gotten to feel like I'm missing stuff by sleeping too much.

*Zeek pissed*

My intertubes aren't working at home! I had junk to do last night so I went out and hoped they'd heal while I was gone. Unfortunately they did not. I called the support number at like 11:30pm and they left me on hold for over half an hour. Their support was as helpful as a space heater in hell. They wanted to schedule a repair man on Saturday. I complained until he agreed to put me on the "emergency repair" list which mean "maybe" I could get someone out today. So, there went a good 45minutes - 1hour of sleep and still no intertubes. My bet is some moron shut off my service when he was supposed to be shutting off someone else's. I'm basing that on the cable modem not getting any flashing on the "cable" light. Bah!

Well the time warner raid is off. They got my webbies all fixed up. The technical jargon was "the 8 way switch was worn out and stopped working". Now I know they can see info about my cable modem when it's up and running. So, shouldn't they put up a red flag when even say every modem attached to an 8 way switch drop offline and never come back for hours and hours? I'd think they'd just say "hey we have a problem here" and send someone out without a phone call. Bah!

Anyway happy Dollhouse day everybody. I'm still not very enthused about it and I refuse to be a downer in the "who's excited" thread. I'm extremely reserved about it. Though I do like that in a few hours Joss will finally return to television.

Okay, I don't post here much, but I need to rant, or ponder, if you will:

My 15-year old son will not do his homework. Seriously, it's gotten very frustrating. He's a great kid. Is very respectful (within normal reason). Stays out of trouble. But sometimes he stops doing homework, or even in-class work, for weeks at a time. Right now, the interim report he got was 3Fs, 3Ds, and a C-minus.

He's very smart - always scores in the 90+ percentile on all of the testing. But he just stops working sometimes. I've tried grounding. I've tried to micromanage his homework (checking everything every day), but any time I take my eyes off of it, he just, at random, quits. We even homeschooled him (online) for his freshman year. And that seemed to end it (because it's very obvious when you don't hand in your assignments). But he hated home school. I've told him that we'll go back to home school if he doesn't improve the grades. But he'll hate it. And I'll hate it for him.

Okay, thanks for letting me rant. If anyone has a magic wand they know of for fixing this problem, I'd love to hear it.

Magic wand...here you go.
OK first I'd have you son evaluated for ADD ( not ADHD) and dyslexia. His behavior sounds exactly what my parents went through, I had an A on every test and turned nothing in. I was very smart but produced no work and it drove them nuts and they had to do the same thing watch me every min. Turned otu I had ADD and once I was diagnosed and on meds and learned some coping skills things got loads better.
Second. Behavior contract with him. It's time for let's make a deal. http://www.parentcontracts.com/
Third- remember it is easier to ground his stuff instead of him. Take cell phone, ipod, computer, game system, etc and lock it in a closet. He earns back one component per day for having all assignments completed. Fourth - Have a daily tracking sheet or planner that he has to get signed by each teacher. If he does not bring it home... he loses television time, friend time, etc. It's going to require you to manage him. Part of the contract deal can be that he earns his way off the daily tracking sheet, but the minute his grades drop he's back on it. If you need more specifics or help, email me at oncemorewithfeeling321@yahoo.com
Oh and in case you're wondering what my qualifications are I have 9 years teaching experience and now serve as a behavior consultant dealing with difficult kids( or kids like your son) for a school district. Hang in there

To add to MsA's suggestion:
I'd also suggest talking to your son's counselor for additional support. They'll probably do something similar for your son (behavioral contract, work monitoring -- a.k.a. "dog tag", alerting the teachers about the situtation, and behavioral contract) plus they should be able to offer a few other options that MsA hasn't mentioned. (Counseling for your son and what the teachers notice about your son for instance.) It's also a way to start the ball rolling for other evaluations (ADD, depression, etc.).
It would put your son on notice that the adults in his school life are aware and all on the same page.

...and in case you're wondering about my qualifications: I've been a teacher for 7 years and worked as an aide in special education for about 3 years. Hang tight.

The way I get over hurtful comments is to realize I don't respect the person making the comments. I don't really value the opinions of jerks or idiots. If someone's trying to be hurtful they're probably a jerk.

So, dollhouse...what did you guys think? I thought the episode was ok but I don't see where echo's character is going. She gets wiped all the time right? Seems like everyone around her that might be kind of interesting. Who's wondering if some of the people we've met are programmed and don't know it? Like the handler, the boss lady, even the cop investigating them. Seems like a potential twist that's coming up. Obviously I'll keep watching, but I hope it's not just a procedural.

I saw Dollhouse, frankly I loved it, as pilots go. I'm really excited. But the whole point of Echo's character from Day 1 (from the original original premise) was that she is slowly going to start remembering stuff. So her arc is very different, but it'll be there.

Next week, I think, is supposed to be the original pilot, so that'll be exposition heavy I suppose, I'm waiting until the third episode before saying what it'll be week to week.

As for the homework doing issue... I can't say I have anything to add except... don't give up on him. My eldest sister stopped doing a lot of her homework in 7th grade or so, and she... well it complicated her life a good deal. And it always hurt me that she wouldn't listen to me, and my parents sort of... stopped trying. It was always an issue, but my sister kept avoiding a lot of her work for most of high school. From my own experiences, when I considered not doing my homework and such it was because I didn't see a point in the work, or in grades or book-learning. But I enjoyed getting good grades, still do. Sort of a self-justification thing. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck.

Ok sweety I have totally been exactly there. I finally had to realize that my mom ( and probably yours) have issues of their own. They equate being skinny ( unnaturally skinny) with being popular and good so they push you toward it because they think if it would make them happy it would make you happy. I'd ask your mom to go with you to the doctor have the doctor weigh you and decide if weight loss is in order and have the doctor ( if for some odd reason he thinks you need to diet) set up a nutrition plan for you. Mom's are not health professionals.... hopefully that will get your mom off your back Plus it'll shut your mom up big time when the doctor says there's nothing wrong with your weight. What's she going to say " the doctor says you're healthy but I want you to lose more weight and be unhealthy?"

Try this instead LF
http://dietbites.com/article1023.html
There's a chart with hight and weight and basically explains where you should be .( make sure to identify your frame size first)
'cause I always thought I had a small frame and it turns out I have a medium frame so my weight is different
Here's how to know your frame. If you're right handed take your right hand and wrap your fingers around your wrist close to where it joins your hand. If the fingers overlap you have a small frame. If they touch it's medium frame if they don't touch you have a large frame.
Show it to her... boom you prove you are just fine!!

NVG here:

Dollhouse- Cool but a little on the choppy side. Already like watching Train Job before getting to watch the Serenity pilot first. Seems IF they show the pilot at all it will be better than the first episode we get to watch. Things like that turn off the casual watcher from the get-go. Seems we've run into this issue before...

As for the premise, I've seen this in a few other places before. My favorite was Gunslinger Girl. The Dollhouse members aren't exactly robots, but they ain't far from either. Time will tell...

Okay, favorite line from a current show:

We've been watching Leverage in TNT and it has been a while since I've like a show to this degree (since Vengeance Unlimited in fact). The episode we recorded featured the line, "What smells like crank and screams like a girl?", uttered by one of the heroes before he pummels three hostage taking speed freaks by hand. T'was awesome and shit. Must watch.

MUST

WATCH

Okay, so we've talked to the school counselor this morning, and it looks like she's going to work with the teachers to help my son with his homework issues. It also sounded like she had a talk with him that helped him get out some things that were bothering him.

Anyway, we're going to give this a couple of weeks and then see how he's doing. Thanks guys!

Not particularly. Just had lots of time to do stuff I wanted to. Watched Dollhouse obviously. Played a bunch of videogames. Played some poker and ended up ahead (which is always nice). Started catching up on the Angel comics. It started out slow but I'm starting to get sucked in.

So here's a ponder... how long do you keep helping someone who is obviously resistant. It's my job to assist teachers in developing skills to deal with their classes, but I am currently dealing with 2 people who respond to my instructions with maybe, I'll think about it, and I'm not sure.... now the thing is they are both in serious trouble with their principals and if they don't do what I say and get functional at their jobs, they will be fired( they both are aware of this)....and yet they still seem clueless or like they think it's unfair they have to meet the basic requirements of their job description..... so how long should I try to help them???

I would think you should help until they get fired. How long will they really last if they don't shape up? Especially if this is your job. I don't think you should stop doing your job just because you don't think it's going anywhere. Do you need to cover your ass in case they do get fired? Will it reflect poorly on you?

Now for my weird question. So, there's a girl I've had a crush on but she's never lived anywhere near me. I've mentioned her before. I don't think I've seen her in like a year and a half. Anyway I got on an email with a long list of other people asking for updated contact info like my address. The friend I know her through thinks it's some automated thing cause she got the same message verbatim sent to her email and facebook. So, do I ignore the note and look like a jerk if she really does need my info for something or do I respond and look weird for sending my contact info to someone I'm a slight acquaintance with?

Are you facing depression issues? I know that I am fighting depression and one of my symptoms is that I sleep too much and can not get the energy to face the day.

As far as the country making the mistake by not teaching its children to cook, raise a garden, and start a fire, shouldn't that be a parent's responsibility?

Actually I might not be sleeping enough. It just feels like I miss a bunch when I sleep.

Though I do usually get a bit depressed this time of year.

I think she may have something in that quote. The state of the country hasn't really been conducive to basic living skills for a while. All the political correctness and pussy posturing has kind of left more kids without those things. It is more important to work a microwave and open a packged food than to get the food from its actual source. I know a ton of kids who can do those things. But it seems their numbers have dropped significantly over time. Sucks. Not all kids cook meth, grow pot, or burn down peoples homes for fun and/or profit.

Dunno if you've thought of it this way (paradigm shift): Help them as long as possible, but look/treat them as if they're your students (only older). I have a feeling that they're feeling overwhelmed and drowning with everything they have to do. Plus, at this point in the game (middle of the year), I'm pretty sure that they feel like some of their students -- failing; with no hope; and only criticisms coming in about how they're not good enough, smart enough, doing things fast enough, etc. (not that you're doing that, I'm looking at it from their point of view).
I know it sounds kinda stupid, but have you told them what they're doing right along with what they need to improve? Maybe work at things from that angle?
Just a couple of thoughts that come to mind...
*hugs*

HUGS Neko thanks and I wish I could be confident, but I have been working with them for months. One is still calling students " maggots' refusing to give them work on their level and verbally abusing them and other staff. The other has decided it's play time and lets them play games, watch tv and rough house and despite months and months with them I cannot get them to let me help ( I offered to set up classes, review files so they don't have to, do lesson plans for them, provide them curriculum, train them on one of any 5 behavior plans... their choice, etc) I can't get them to accept that they have to have lesson plans, they have to do the legally required accommodations, they need to have some kind of rules and discipline, and they have to be polite and positive with kids... I'm just not sure how much more I can do. And yes I provide them with 3 positive comments for every 1 suggestion fro improvement and I carefully word it to be neutral ...for example. It's important to have a science assignment that they can read. Here are 3 different books you can use to do that. It's great that you want them to know all this material, but it is over their reading level. I am sure they will be more successful using one of the textbooks I gave you.

Oh and one mroe thing... they aren't new teachers. They have held teaching jobs before ( one has been fired in 5 states .... the other was in one position then transferred to an easier job, then transferred to an even easier job... not that any teaching job is ever easy, but still as simple as we can make it)

Maggots?!? Wow. You know, some people just aren't meant to be teachers.

I feel for you, though. I mean, here you are wanting to help. And, really, they're not worth helping. (And I really hate that I just wrote that.)

Unless you think you can really *reach* these people (and maybe you can), I would suggest documenting everything you do to help them and documenting all of the horrible things they say and do with their students and other faculty.

Really, though, getting these people to do lesson plans (or whatever required tasks) does not address what seems to be the core of their problems: their contempt for others. If you can help them get over that, then the rest of it becomes easy. But, then, that's probably not what you signed up for.

So, as an incentive to resign my lease my apartment complex offers one free carpet cleaning. I resigned and the cleaning is scheduled for this morning. I'm going to have to lock the kitty in the bathroom and since I know she won't like it I'm working from home. I've got the bathroom set up with my computer chair, a dinner table chair (so I can put my feet up), cat food dispenser, cat water dish, cat litter box, cat bed, my laptop and it's cord running across the sink. If the cleaners don't laugh at this ridiculousness I'll be amazed.

Not moving. I signed a new 12 month lease so they're washing the carpet as an incentive to keep me here. Last time I resigned they put in a ceiling fan (that I've used maybe twice).

I actually got to choose from a list of like 3 things. Carpet cleaning, vertical blinds by the patio doors (I already put some up on my own), or a maid service visit. I'd just feel bad for the maid service. I don't know what they'd do with all the clutter all over the place. Either they'd clean around it (what's the point of that) or they'd have to throw it all in a pile or something. I don't really like either option there. So, carpets it is...if they ever show up.

OK I know it's only February but I think it's time to call it. Do over on 2009! This year is one big pile of suck and the outlook is not good.

The cleaners still have not showed up. The first time I called the office they said they were a couple hours behind. Fine my cleaning was supposed to be for the morning but what do I care if it's early afternoon. Um...it's 4:45 and nothing. Not even a call from the office with an update. They didn't answer the phone when I called back. I'll walk over there before they close if I don't get anything out of them. Plus they left a little love note on my door this afternoon complaining about my satellite dish AGAIN! I cleared this with them twice already. First time they left a note like this and again before I signed my new lease. Both times they said it was not a problem and they wouldn't bother me again. Grrrrr!

I'm all for it.

So, here's a ponder for you guys. My brother and I are trying to think through what to do about a trip my Dad has his heart set on. He really wants us to fly out to New York and then drive to Washington DC to meet his relatives out there. I'm 28 and my brother is 31. If we haven't met these people by now how much do you think we care about them? That's right, zip. Yet he really wants us to go because his aunt somethingorother is like 91 and on death's door and he wants us to meet her at least once. She's got alzheimer's already and I can't imagine either of us will get much out of this meeting. So, really we're trying to figure out how to make this the least painful experience. We don't want to spend a ton of money or a ton of vacation on this cause we don't care about it. We also don't want to set a precedent that we're ever going on trips like this again. We are not going to this lady's funeral and we're not going to random people's weddings or anything like that. If we do this it's a one time shot. Is there any good way to break that to my Dad?

Couldn't you just say to your dad what you said to us there, but perhaps word it a little different? Your reasons seem fair enough, just being honest about it up front might be a good option. Just keep it plain and simple.

Thursday, February 19, 2009 4:46 PM

Well the problem there is my Dad is pretty much crazy. He's not my favorite person ever. My parents got divorced 21 years ago and he's still bitter about it and blames my mom for a ton of the problems in his life. The rest he blames on the government and his brother. He's a gianormous loser and really me and my brother are about the only bright spots in his life. My older brother is more sympathetic toward him than I am. If I told my Dad that I really don't care about his side of the family he'd get pretty upset and emotional and then my brother would be upset with me. I'd rather have a decent relationship with my brother so I'm trying to play nice.

I hate playing nice when it means my time and money are going to get blown on stuff I don't want to do. Anyway that's why I'm trying to find the best way to play nice and reduce the time and money investment. No easy task huh?

Seriously it won't kill you to spend a few days getting to know someone if it makes your dad that happy and is that important to you. Maybe you'll find that you do connect with one. If not hey you got to see DC and made your dad really happy. I can see you really don't seem to enjoy your dad and I am sure he's got major problems, but at least he stayed around and tried to be part of your life:) You can always decline later invitations but at least you gave it a shot.
