I don't have much time to write stuff, but I'd like to agree that this is one phenomenal film, and is definitely in my top 10 for 2003 (and i see a LOT of good movies). It's one of the most marvelously understated films I've ever seen, almost everything is implied, in the acting and elsewhere. All the little moments are just incredible. The camera work is precise ...the way it explores the space around it, the way it turns corners in such a consistent way, makes you so aware of the spatial relationships between objects in the room, and the way light is hitting things, which is in fact one of its central topics (they even foreground this by talking about it in the dialogue).
just in case my appreciation of this movie makes you interested in my recommends, the rest of my top 10 includes: "Dolls", "Spider", "At 5 in the Afternoon", "21 Grams", "Lost in Translation", "Kill Bill", and "House of Sand and Fog".
oh, and my only big recommend from 2004 so far is "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".

I agree! Girl with a Pearl Earring is absolutely beautiful in every aspect and detail. There's a dialogue between Colin Firth's character (Vermeer) and Scarlett Johannsson's character (Griet) about the color of clouds. I live in Amsterdam and when I got outside the clouds had the exact colors as described in the film.
Robyn.
