So skewed. This is the typical of every graying generation, "in my day...." blah blah blah, whine, winge, fart.
I am constantly impressed with the kids I meet, they seem emotionally much stronger and more enlightened than my generation ever was at their age. They still do stupid things (especially driving), but they are new at a lot of it.
Also take into consideration that today's kids have a lot more to learn, with computers, phones and digital technology in general. Most adults can't figure out how to work a digital watch, hand it to a 5 yr old and they'll have it picking up weather reports from Russia.
World news? National news? Less "me me me?" Maybe not so much, but wouldn't that be the teaching generation's fault and not theirs?

PB, IQ is a reading of cross the board intelligence. Low IQs leads to apathy. The positive side young people are easier to exploit. Which makes my life fun.

I'm sceptical. I think that a large number of kids with two parents don't necessarily spend more time under parental supervision than single-parent kids, if both parents are working, which they often have to do. This shouldn't all be blamed on absentee fathers, even though, obviously, they should be more involved in their kids lives.

I think there are many factors that formed a cultural shift of kids spending more time passively consuming (information, food) than actively pursuing. The increase of single-parenting may be one factor, but there are others. After all, kids learn from their environment and the people they learn passive consuming from are their parents, be they one or two.

And yet, somehow, we keep finding kids who grow up smarter, push the envelope further, expand our knowledge and abilities more, break all "unbreakable" physical records, et cetera.

Seems while we're whining about how much we're doing wrong, we still seem to be doing something right!

A lot of the IQ tests used are outdated, and do not reflect the reality of today's world. They are also somewhat notoriously bad at correctly pegging the IQ of non-white students.

I've actually been doing some work in this area for my job lately.

I have to say, though, that I wonder how representative single high achievers are of the whole group and whether they should be considered when we examine the average kid.

lol. Sure, let's take the smartest ones out of the equation. Then you're bound to end up with a so called "average teen" figure that fits with your preconceived idea of it.

Come on. What was described in the post I replied to were extraordinary achievers, not the entirety of the "above average" part of the curve.

You can't pick the most gifted and expect them to be any indication on how the less highly gifted are faring educationally and mentally. If IQ is dropping (assuming the study is legit) then this means something and it's not just playing around with numbers.

People with natural talent and a supportive environmnt will do well, but the occurence of a few kids benefitting from this combination does nothing to indicate the actual prevalance of truly supportive environments, or how many kids grow up in unsupportive environments. A lowered average IQ does that, though. Because it deals with the average.

Fact is, high achievers don't nessesarily have high IQs, so we're talking about different measures, here. High IQ kids often perform poorly in school - especially public school.

We do everything wrong. But the best thing about us is that we are capable of seeing it.

I think this probably the single over-arcing point in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and in the movie as well.
