The acting was the acting. Either you love and accept it as a 43 year iconic classic or you don't. I generally think the acting was outstanding, and the show was perfectly cast.

Its a different style of acting: The whole show is structured like a Shakespearean tragedy, complete with soliloquies, and the cast play it as if they were standing on stage projecting to an audience.
We're all used to the modern style of TV acting, which is more informal, intimate and naturalistic. Partly fashion, partly because of modern lightweight equipment and editing techniques. Back in 1966 this would have been a bit too Stanley Kubrick for the rather conservative TV networks.
Actually, TV space opera has tended to stick to the old melodramatic style: I'd say the new BSG is the first to really drag it into the 1990s (Firefly may have had wobbly cameras in space, but it deliberately aped the speech patterns of cowboy flicks). Personally I think this works well with the morality tale/tragedy storylines that space opera tends to use, but it might contribute to the ghettoization of TV SF.
Babylon 5 and the SciFi channel version of Dune are two prime examples (although both had their share of genuinely awful acting, too). Actually, I loved the way the TV "Dune" interpreted it as "Macbeth in space" - even down to Baron Harkonnen talking in verse.

I very much agree with that, and in fairness it should be appreciated for what it was, when it was. It had great comraderie, and humor. It had great social and philosophical themes, and they practically put the thing together with no money, using scraps from junkyards and second hand shops for sets and props. And just a small handful of people put it all together each week with true futuristic reality when it aired. Really an amazing feat.

That's a great story Chris. I remember from the interviews with all the guys who did the scrounging and salvaging for the production how they hand painted everything, lighted every light and screen by hand. No computers back then. Everything was done on just three basic sets, and they would create every environment and all the structures by hand. We're lucky to be able to watch Star Trek again on big digital widescreen tv's. The show holds up better than ever.
