We Got Our Edge Back

The absentee operator of TVTally, or someone with sysadmin privs, showed up last week to do some site maintenance. Several things have changed. First, the cookie monster has been tamed somewhat. By using a browser with cookies turned off, you can now only vote three times for one show every six hours, not six times. Second, the message boards have disappeared. This was the only way, in theory, for the site admin and users to communicate (no one ever responds when tvtally@gmail.com is used). Now it's all gone (and I posted the last message, last November, I hope that wasn't the cause). There was sort of, it seems, a third fix. The weekly totals are not yet correctly returning to zero, but they are apparently returning to the same bad numbers they did last week (and maybe forever after. This nonsense began three weeks ago, where tvtally weekly numbers did not roll over to zero. Instead what showed up was larger numbers, with Jericho in the lead. Many other shows got numbers other than zero. This does not have any impact on the overall totals. It's just confusing. But apparently the Jericho fans believe it, because their voting has slacked off. Ours remains strong. Let's keep it that way.

Actually, it's pretty hilarious to read some of the Jericho board comments over the last couple of days.

"We're up by like 235, what the heck happened here? Is someone screwing around with us? How did it go from 2 to over 200 overnight?" (They must not be smart enough to figure out that the board is broken.)

"I think somebody will make us look like cheaters on TvTally. Maybe we should vote for Firefly?" (Sure, we're going to cheat by pushing you ahead 250 votes at the start of each week...)

"Wow, how did we jump so high on TVTally?! Maybe all the Rangers are here to vote?" (Yup, all six of you...)

"How can firefly vote so much and not post?" (Um, maybe because you're looking at an NBC forum and Firefly wasn't on NBC!)

"Miracles looks like it's holding it's own very well." (Helps when Miracles starts the week with over 250 votes!)

"Firefly is just having fun as it did on Tv_vote.com." (If fun means getting more votes, I guess they're right!)

And after this morning's weekly non-reset: "Our lead on tvtally has greatly increased."

Oops, Losing Our Edge Again

I understand why Twilight is winning this one - those fans are crazed. And it doesn't take too many voters. With the new code changes at TVTally, the most votes you can put into a show per day are 12 (6 or 9 is more likely). Looking at the daily totals, it appears there are fewer than ten Jericho fans voting. So if 2-3 of them can't get to a PC as much on the weekends, it makes a big difference.

Hmmm, wonder if you can vote via an iPhone? That could also make a difference. Browncoats seem like smartphone people...

Yeah, TVVote ended just in time for us. There were several other fandoms that were coming on real strong (Miracles was one), and would have made a serious run at our lead in another year or so of voting. But so far, we are pulling in more votes per week at TVTally than anyone else.

We are now less than 2,000 (1996) behind Jericho. At this rate, in 81 days we pass them. May Firstish. And it appears they aren't even aware of their impending doom. Perfect.

The absentee operator of TVTally, or someone with sysadmin privs, showed up last week to do some site maintenance. Several things have changed. First, the cookie monster has been tamed somewhat. By using a browser with cookies turned off, you can now only vote three times for one show every six hours, not six times. Second, the message boards have disappeared. This was the only way, in theory, for the site admin and users to communicate (no one ever responds when tvtally@gmail.com is used). Now it's all gone (and I posted the last message, last November, I hope that wasn't the cause). There was sort of, it seems, a third fix. The weekly totals are not yet correctly returning to zero, but they are apparently returning to the same bad numbers they did last week (and maybe forever after. Thirteen Is Our Lucky Number

We are now less than 2,000 behind Jericho. But they are on to us, and voting much more heavily. Where's our lurker from the Jericho boards? What's going on over there?

We gained 151 votes on Jericho last week (240 the previous week). Overall the total vote at the beginning of the week is Jericho 44672 (44281 last week), Firefly 42709 (42167 last week) We are 1963 behind, versus 2114 a week ago. A year ago, we were ahead. Over the last few weeks, we have been closing the gap.

The absentee operator of TVTally, or someone with sysadmin privs, showed up in January to do some site maintenance. Several things have changed. First, the cookie monster has been tamed somewhat. By using a browser with cookies turned off, you can now only vote three times for one show every six hours, not six times. Second, the message boards have disappeared. This was the only way, in theory, for the site admin and users to communicate (no one ever responds when tvtally@gmail.com is used). Now it's all gone (and I posted the last message, last November, I hope that wasn't the cause). Thought there was a third fix, but no. The weekly totals are not yet correctly returning to zero, but they are returning to some older dataset. This nonsense began in January, where tvtally weekly numbers first did not roll over to zero. Instead what showed up was larger numbers, with Jericho in the lead. Many other shows got numbers other than zero. This does not have any impact on the overall totals. It's just confusing.

If you turn off cookies on your browser, when you go to TVTally, you can vote up to three (used to be six) times (and for more than one show, or all for one show). You can also vote more than once in six hours (unpredictable, tends to happen early in the day, and after 6 PM). Some consider this cheating, some don't. Either you're a cookie monster, or you ain't.
