Actually, the Forbidden Planet remake sounds interesting; JMS wants to do a prequel, focusing on what happened to the Bellerophon colony (and explaining how Morbius discovered the Krell installation and how his family survived to be found 19 years later).

It might turn into a trilogy, with the second film being the remake, and the finale being a sequel.

I don't understand why folks get so bent outta shape over remakes. It doesn't take the original away, and in most cases, brings the original to the attention f those who may not have seen or heard of it. And in a lot of cases, a remake means we get a new tricked out special edition DVD of the original.

That's a fair point Storymark. I've tended to be a little sensitive about remakes in the past but you're right. The original still exists so no harm done I guess.

I think "When Worlds Collides" and Creature from the Black Lagoon" are possibly the most interesting ones for remake. The advancement in special effects would add to those. "Creature" would again benefit from 3d - as with it's original. Hasn't James Cameron been working on a new digital 3d camera? Could be a good vehicle to try it out.

I'd be curious about the FLash Gordon remake. I do like the campy 80's version (mostly for Ornella Muti as Pricess Aura) but if they take the less cheesey approach this could be an interesting film. How about Joss for directing?

All those sound interesting to me, except Robocop. No need for a new one there IMO, unless they just want to start a new franchise.
No new Westworld though? That's fine with me, but I WOULD like a better tranfer of the original than is currently available- I have to sit far from my TV to avoid the grain.

War of the Worlds............sucked
Day The Earth Stood Still....sucked
Planet of the Apes...........sucked
Journey To The Center Earth..sucked
Invaders From Mars...........sucked
The Blob.....................sucked
Frankenstein.................sucked
Battlefield Earth...............sucked
Not of This Earth............not bad, and having Traci Lords in it was a a nice touch (actually 2 nice touches)
The Time Machine.............not bad, but pales by comparison to original
The Thing..................excellent, but still pales by comparison to original

I much prefer The Thing remake. also rather liked War of the Worlds (as long as I turn it off before the final scene).

Battlefield Earth was a remake? Huh....?

And there's the Catch-22. Original properties are harder to advertise, and doing so drives up the cost, making it harder to recoup.

And remakes get attention that originals don't , in terms of pre-release buzz. The second any remake is announced, you have opeople talking about it, some glad, most complaining, but it furthers the dialog, entrenches the remake in the mind of the general audience, and enevitably leads to most of those people going to see it - even if it's just so they can say "See, I toldja it'd suck!". And by then, they've already bought the ticket.

Why remake perfection. If they do a remake of Forbidden Planet it better have Leslie Nielsen in it. Actually, his now characteristic slapstick would make it a different movie. A remake has to be a different movie, otherwise what's the point?
Oh, Emma Watson should be the naked chick ;)

I liked apes remake because it was so much not the same movie. It was like "cool, more of this story." That always has possibilities, often, true, it fails.

A couple that were also interesting for their different spin: Island of Dr. Moreaux, watch both, and ... [i forgot, I'll edit back in later]

What *should* be remade is movies that had a good core idea and some interesting elements, but they blew it somehow. For some reason ($) they always remake masterpieces. They should take a failure with some appeal, and look at what made it fail. Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell might have failed because of a lack of Nymphoids, Barbarians, Dinosaurs and Hell. Likewise to Teenage Catgirls in Heat.

But before you take a brilliant film and remake it, scan over the countless books and short stories with film potential.

The most pointless remake to me is not the one that disappoints because it diverges, or whatever, but the so incredibly similar Psycho what's the point?

The "why" question always amazes me.

It's real simple - money. Duh.

Same reason a studio puts up money for anything.

No one, most especially the key demographic, are buying those old movies. They do a remake, they not only sell tickets (and eventually DVDs, TV rights, ect.) to the new one, but sales of the original spike up higher than they ever did before (since most of the films being remade so far are from before the time of video sell-through).

Though I agree they should be remaking the movies that had a good premise, but didn't quite come out right, that gets back to the marketing problem I mentioned above. The failed ones don't have any traction in the public eye, and thus are far less appealing than a classic.

I just take the remakes as they come, most will suck, but that's true of movies in general - 90% of everything is crap, as the saying goes. Seems a waste of time to get worked up over a remake, especially when it's mainly for sentimental reasons.

I consider that very high praise of my examples coming from you. I will grant you the exculpatory (popular word lately) position on The Thing. It definitely was a different movie, a terrific movie in its' own right on all levels, and it shared the same theme stemming from the original short story. As for the others, I still watch them occasionally if they're on TV.

Forbidden Planet was deliciously campy, retro and so 50's that it makes it fun to watch, plus Robby the Robot. Also Annne Francis was easy on the eyes. Who could ask for more?

Yes, it might indeed make money. But what a lot of these Studios fail to realize is, even if it made a profit, that doesn't mean people liked it, or will line up to see a sequel.
