I woke up this morning to the sound of water pouring down from my ceiling. Apparently the apartment upstairs has a bad drain. Looking at the amount of water in the two buckets I used to collect it, I would say two to three gallons. A lot of fun mopping the floor. Well it needed it anyway. Then I decided to do some cleaning. So it was get of your ass day and do something positive.

I gotta say I just don't understand how people can get so insanely greedy. I was just reading about how some lady is suing the guy who created circe de solei (sp?). He's like a billionaire of course and I'm sure even the lawsuit wouldn't be a dent in his bank account but that's not the point. The two dated and had 3 children together but never got married. I think someone said they might have met the restrictions for common law marriage but that's not confirmed. Anyway after they broke up he set her up in a multimillion dollar house and gives her a $36,000 per month check. That sounds pretty darn nice to me. Nope she wants $50 million up front and $50,000 per month.

What possesses someone who's set for life to want even more money? I just don't get it.

Honestly I have to wonder how often a person's lawyer has a role in that sort of greed. If she wins the lawsuit, her lawyer will be getting a huge payback. Assuming it's been several years that she's been just fine with the house and the $36k/mo deal, why the sudden change? New lawyer whispering in her ear convincing her that she could have so much more, while seeing dollar signs himself?

Now, I generally have a huge respect for lawyers. I'm not one of those people who hate all lawyers. But the best and the brightest wield a huge amount of power, once they figure out how to game our legal system. Some use those powers for good, and others use it for evil (*coughFoxcough*). Any time I see this sort of "Wait, after all this time, I'm owed so much more!" story, I have to wonder about lawyers using their powers for evil...

ok yeah. I know a lawyer ( ok I know a lot of lawyers) who is a personal injury lawyer, but he's very principled and works hard to find cases where people are being injured and shortchanged by insurance or being misled. In one case he fought an insurance company who was denying chemotherapy for a 8 year old girl with cancer. Luckily he's good and he won:)
But there are so many more lawyers who are just so all about what they can get and not about what is fair or right.

I was just talking to a friend about that. She's getting certified to perform CPR and I told her that my mom (who's a nurse) told me, "if you're certified to perform CPR and you try to help someone and you do something wrong then you can get sued. However, if you don't have any official certification and you're just trying to help someone then you can't be sued." So, I've always avoided official certification. Which really is sorta horrible if I'm ever in a position to help someone and I don't know what I'm doing. Things like that about our legal system are sick.

I will wait and see if Dollhouse works. It has a plot I have never seen before. And the trailers indicate there will be twists and surprises. So I am hopeful.

ugh, most of em are fine, but I'm not so sure about Creative Writing.

See, I've been writing for a *long* time, and even though pretty much everything I've read is still worlds better than anything I could put on paper, I still like writing just for the fun of it, just to get what's in my head down on paper (I'm a narrative writer, not a poet).

My creative writing professor is a poetry fan. That's fine by me, except that he wants to really stress poetry in our class, rather than just give us a taste of poetry and a taste of narrative. Okay, I'm not a fan of poetry, but I'll stick with it anyway just cuz.

The other thing is the 'prose sketches' he has outlined on the syllabus. As a writer I'm used to just going with the flow, writing whatever's in my head at the time, and even if a teacher gives me certain parameters to stay within, they're usually pretty loose as long as they stay with the subject matter.
This guy has *specific* topics and *tight* rules for us to stay within, which has me wanting to throw myself off a cliff.
--Now, I get that the point of this is to challenge us and make us work within a specific mindset and all that jazz, but it's like 'you're restricting my creativity by being so specific with these assignments.' I thought the point of creative writing was to explore your imagination and see what you find, not give essay-esque guidelines that leave you cornered with very few options. How can you 'find your artistic voice' (which is what he titled the goal of the class) if you're not allowed room to breathe?
To put it bluntly, I feel like he's cramping my style XD

I've done the cold thing. It's not nearly as bad as gloomy IMO. I'll take the negative degree weather for a few seconds and then get inside and be fine all day. The gloom comes in through the windows. The cold doesn't.

Favorite weather? 80 and sunny with a light breeze. Anything 95+ is fun too, because that means it’s 80 and breezy at the beach, lol. The weather here in SoCal is pretty much perfect for me, though I do wish we had more thunderstorms. When it does rain here, it’s pretty light. Every now and then I want a serious, batten down the hatches storm – wind, lightning, thunder, power outages, the whole bit. If we could have one or two storms like that each winter, I would be 100% happy with the weather here.

FLT, on the creative writing prof, he may be trying to push you to find your artistic voice under less than optimal working conditions, which will make you grow as a writer. I think college students typically take creative writing courses for two reasons, either as a “fluff” class to fill out their general ed requirement, or because they want to have a career that involves writing of some sort. Making a class non-fluffy for the first students will help your course be taken more seriously. And putting tight restrictions on the aspiring writers will help them become better writers and be better prepared to actually go into a career involving writing.

My experience working in a creative profession (game design, which has a lot in common with writing, though it’s much less linear) has been that anything that comes with money attached is going to have crazy tight restrictions. And anything you try to get going yourself (I’ve worked multiple start-ups) comes with the restrictions involved in not really having any money and needing to get everything done asap. Anything that doesn’t come with tight restrictions in one way or another is a hobby, not a profession. If you do anything creative for a living, I really think you almost never have any room to breathe. It’s still about your creative vision, but only within the confines of the allotted time and money, and within what your boss likes, and within what the CEO or studio head likes, and within what the publisher or funder thinks the market will like. Either you can learn to thrive within these tiny spaces, figuring out ways to be more creative and clever because of the restrictions, or you go back to writing/designing/painting/whatever “for yourself”, with no one else’s restrictions on it. And there’s nothing wrong with that, but it won’t pay the bills.

So don’t be too hard on your prof. His job is to teach you something, to help you be a better writer, not to give you college credit for writing for yourself. Look at it as a learning opportunity (obviously) and work within the given restrictions. It may actually help you find your creative strengths in the long run.

I took two writing courses. One was essays and the other was technical reports. Essays was a soso course. I never knew there were different types. The technical was easy because everything was spelled out for you.

My favorite essay was a comparison. A compared steam to diesel locomotives. I may still have copies buried somewhere.

But poetry. I no nothing about poetry. I just know Robert Frost is depressing.

How do these people with no jobs get by?? I ask because I seem to deal with a large number of students who have parent or parents with no job. SO how does that work?? How do you pay rent, get food, etc??

I think guilt is a big part of it. People feel guilty not helping someone if they problem is rubbed in their face all the time. My friend with the financially challenged roommate is now stuck giving her rides to work all the time because her finances are so bad she can't keep her car in working order. If this was just a random person she didn't see every day she's say "you're problem deal with it". Since it's right in front of her she'll keep helping out and just resent her roommate for it.

The moochers just need to constantly show up on someone's doorstep looking all hungry and helpless.

MsA: The ones I know the most of are the Micronesian/Bikini Atoll folks (they were promised to be cared for all their lives by the gov't for using their island as a testing site).

Someone told me that one way to "beat" the system is to apply for unemployment insurance, look for jobs, get hired and work for a day or two, then quit, claiming that the job wasn't a good fit. (I have no idea if that's true or not.)

Food-wise, I'd guess that they'd use food stamps and the WIC (women's and children's supplemental for families that qualify), and the free/reduced meals at school.

I know of someone who is currently living off of savings (frugally), the occasional side job, and occasional family support (money given by family -- not asked for, mind you....). But then again, that person has been really burned out, but has started looking for jobs again. (And that's probably not the kind of person you're asking about either.)

Then again selling a dimes and quarters weekly can keep a person fed for quite a while.

HUGS Neko no I was not talking about those who live frugally and had their job taken from them. I'm thinking more of some of the parents I work with who haven't been employed in years and years and don't seem to have any interest in looking for work. I'm just trying to figure out how they manage and how best to help them because it's so stressful for the kids and it prevents the kids having access to all kinds of care they need.... sigh

lol I think I may have offended my friend by crying foul of her gift idea of getting tickets to a musical for her bf's birthday. I said it's the equivalent of a guy getting his gf tickets to a monster truck rally. This was over a messenger and I've gotten no response in over 10 minutes. I think it's a valid comparison unless he stated that he really enjoys musicals.

MsA: Yeah, I figured. My other guesses are: a) they're living off of disability (or something) which prohibits working and would cost them their benefits, b) subsistence-types (live mainly off what they can grow/hunt/fish/harvest), c) they (the parents) have become "comfortable" in their current lifestyle and they've got a "so what?" attitude towards the whole thing, d) the family is homeless and the parents are the ones who are taking care of their camp. (I know of families who are homeless because they can't afford rent, and make do with living in a tent somewhere....somebody's got to take care of the family's possessions and whatnot.)

*hugs MsA* I wish I could give you an answer to solve the problem. (You're mainly working with the elementary-age now, right?) The only things that I can think of is to teach them that earning something is better than waiting for something to be handed out to them...('course that's always after they've become comfortable in a stable environment -- namely school.)
A collegue of mine had her students earn money for activities that they wanted by collecting cans, doing on-campus odd jobs (car washes, etc.) and save the money for them to be used for those activities (prom, winterball, etc.). But that was mainly for only one or two of the "major" events in high school.

The dumpster divers for cans and recyclables probably do it at other places too...I remember hearing a story about a set of immigrant parents who did that in addition to working 9-5 jobs, and were able to send their kids to college with the money they made from collecting recyclables.

There also has been issues where I live with people trying to steal cans and bottles from the recycling bins on school campuses. (I kid you not.) So even if the amount is small, it's a fairly good return for doing little to no work.

I hate the fact that there are parents out there who seem to think/expect that schools will provide their kids with everything they need (food, education, health care) and the only thing that they need to provide the kids is with a roof and clothing.

*giggle* But Zeeeeeeeeeeek... *mockwhine* Doesn't everyone love a musical? I agree with your assessment, but like MsA said, I think that it might have been a bit more tactful to say something along the lines of "Does he like musicals?" or somesuch.
I'm guessing that she's not the type of friend that you can tell things bluntly to. *shrug* Oh well.

This isn't really related to the Khan musical, but it is musical in nature...

Although I know the title of this thread is "In The Whole World...", no matter how many times I have saw it pop up on the recent activity section, my mind always jumps straight to "A Whole New World" As made famous by aladdin.

I dont even remember ever seeing that movie the whole way through, but it doesn't matter, it has me. Disney is in my brains and it is not letting go.
