New Doctor Who to be announced tomorrow

People always judge ahead of a new Doctor - he'll have been very forewarned about this. In some ways, it's a tribute to those who have gone before but really, we'll all be there when he takes over and judgement will be made then. Everything that is said now will be long since forgotten - certainly all of those who swore blind that Tennant was too young, too much of an unknown, etc, etc, have conveniently omitted their early opinion on him from their current critiques of Smith.

As he said, it is an iconic role and you have to be prepared for everything that comes with it - for example, over 6m people watched the show that announced him as the Eleventh Doctor despite it being aired at 5:35 on a Saturday afternoon.

The BBC website has an extended interview with him and I love his barely concealed delight at the scripts he has already seen:

I'm so glad i have this lovely (relatively) sane site to hang around on. After my initial huh? reaction I am quietly optimistic. Give him three episodes and i'm sure the majority of the hysterical hoards will be back peddling rapidly.

He did kind of mention that they'd warned him about somethings, I guess right about now they'll be handing him the cuppa and going, "Matt, look, its really not that bad, but if you want the armed guard its here for you mate..."

He is a bit of a young whipper-snapper, but on the other hand if you the power to re-generate it would be a bit daft to turn into a 40-year-old, wouldn't it?

yes... i'm hoping that they go for natural accent or even just vague english - nothing worse than forced accents!

I watched an episode of the Demons thing and it was ok enough except for the fact that i cringed everytime Philip Glenister spoke. Argh. And the worst thing was i couldn't think of one good reason why the character had to be american! Except maybe cultural exchange? A token Yank for Buffy's token Brit?

But David Tennant's English accent isn't natural: He's Scottish.

And the same for John Barrowman; he's Scottish too, except he has a back story where American became his most pronounced accent, when he's not with his family of course.

I for one, don't mind a fake/forced accent, as long as it sounds natural. Thats the important part.

oh no i mean Matts natural accent, which seemd quite nice.

The amazing thing about David was that his English accent seemed so natural you keep having to remind yourself that his own is really Scottish, which is what you want really. Theres noting wrong with putting on accents but if they're not good or justified then they are so distracting and often laughable.

And really, any slips in Capt. Jack's accent can be excused, since Jack isn't "American."

Thats the kind of character detail some actor die for isn't it?

I wonder how hard it is to deliperetly let an accent slip from time to time?

I'm asking as a person who can't do ANY accents - not even scouse despite growing up over the mersey from Liverpool.
