Was that ever really an actual rumor? I never saw it anywhere but here, and that doesn't really count...

I started watching the show with Eccleston's season, so I'm not familiar with the lore and cannon and all that. So, being new to the whole Doctor Who thing, I have to ask: is there a reason the Doctor has never been a female?

Well, there were plenty of folk hereabouts who started buzzing about Chiwetel after David Tennant announced he was leaving. I've also heard John Simm as a possibility albeit not a very likely one since his stint as the Master. By and large, it does seem as though each Doctor has appeared progressively younger than the last - elseways, wouldn't Alan Rickman positively ROCK?

I can see it now. Ten years' time, Daniel Radcliffe will be wielding the ol' sonic screwdriver with Georgie Henley alongside.

ETA: HK, I don't think that's ever been touched on - I've only seen one or two of the classic episodes, but I suspect Time Lords don't or can't change gender when they regenerate.

(BTW, if you haven't heard about the new Spanish version of the show....it's rumoured to be called 'Buenos TARDIS.' Snerk snerk snerk. )

Mostly it's the formula of the show - male Doctor, female companion (plus occasional other female/male/tin dog). There's never been a categorical statement that the Doctor has to be male (or white for that matter) and indeed Joanna Lumley took the role in Curse of the Fatal Death, a parody done for Comic Relief a few years back written by Steven Moffat (the guy who will be taking over from next year).

Chiwetel has been mentioned in a lot of articles though Paterson Joseph is the current favourite:

Yep, I read about it in The Independent.

See http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.asp?b=8&t=36108#662773

I posted the odds there a few weeks back.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!! In the wake of such episodes as 'The Empty Child' and 'Blink' (*shivers*), I can't wait to see where the Doctor winds up with Steven Moffat running the show. But....*sigh* Even at that, it'll be so very sorrowful to have to watch Tennant regenerate into God knows who.
