Just rewatched this last night, and i noticed something while thinking about it afterwards.

What ever happens with Wash and Kaylee on the ship? Unless i missed something, the episode never explains what happens after they trap the guys in by locking the doors. Furthermore, what did they really accomplish by doing that? They trapped them in between the dining area and the engine room, but there's a stairwell right there that leads to the rest of the ship, while Wash and Kaylee have both trapped themselves.

What do you think happened? This could be a good chance to come up with some mini-fanfic to fill in this hole in the plot. :D

Well, the point of it plot wise was to keep Serenity from being involved in the fight, but yeah, it isn't resolved.

Wash probably hung around in the engine room until everyone got back and Kaylee told them about the trapped intruders... But that's kind of boring and unimaginative. I agree, zany scheme/explanations go!

Just played back the scene and saw that the door leading to the cargo bay was locked as well so the intruders are trapped in that one hallway, so nevermind this point.

Also i made a mistake in my first post by saying both Wash and Kaylee trapped themselves, i just meant Wash.

largely the point that was supposed to have been made was they trapped themselves in the wrong locations - gifted mechanic/engineer Kaylee trapped AWAY from the engine room, gifted pilot trapped AWAY from the cockpit.
Now I'm wondering that Kaylee would have had access to the Shuttles -did she still not have flying/piloting skills? Serenity had no weapons anyway, probably just supposed to disrupt the horses and such, so couldn't a Shuttle do the same?

For your original question, I had understood they were stuck until Mal & Co finished with the planned business, then came and got them out of their jam.
I had wondered if this was supposed to reflect upon Wash & Zoe's discussion about a baby in earlier scene, but never found a connection.

I'd always thought that a couple of the baddies that were lined up to watch Rance get executed were the guys Wash and Kaylee trapped. I'll have to watch the episode again to make sure.
