I agree with Zeek, I think the backlash will be pretty fierce. I'm starting to wonder if they can really expect anything to happen before the holiday break, and then we're into January and the inauguration and the new Congress, which could definitely change the situation.

My DVR did sorta cannibalize itself so I had to go online to watch last week's HIMYM. It was a pretty funny one. Somehow I don't really believe the naked man would work 2 out of 3 times though. More like 1 out of 5 or something.

It's actually a computer that does DVR stuff. I don't know what it was hung up on but it was running something that left it going extremly slowly. So after a while of trying to reboot and getting no real response I did a hard restart. Well that left the database on there all screwed up. So, I reverted back to an old backup. That didn't have the latest recordings though. I'm sure they exist somewhere on there but if the database doesn't know about them then it won't play em. :-(

Well having DVR can be a problem too. The reason I have the computer doing my DVRing is so I don't have to pay a stupid monthly fee for one. The thing is my satellite company has their channels bundled all weird. To get a certain set of programming you have to also get their DVR service. I'm like no I don't want to pay for that I just want channels. grrrrr

What's your DVR computer set up like Zeek? I've been thinking about building one from scratch for a few years now (especially as drive space continues to get cheaper and cheaper), and maybe ditching cable all together and going with just over-the-air HD, and whatever we can watch online. A pretty beefy Netflix account would be less per month than we're paying for a bunch of cable channels we don't watch, though I would be sad to lose the History and Discovery channels.

I don't know if you've heard of mythtv or not, but that's what I use. It's an open source project that runs on linux. My tuner card just records regular definition TV. Haven't gone high def yet, but I just got a HD TV so I might look at getting a QAM tuner card. The card I have right now is sorta cool cause it has an IR blaster and an IR receiver with a remote. So, I can program the blaster to send input to my cable box to change the channels. I can use the remote to control mythtv. So, it's pretty nifty IMO. It takes some work to get it all up and running of course. This was also my first introduction to linux so it took me a while to figure out how it all works. That was sorta fun though. It gives me a real sense of accomplishment getting stuff working.
NOTIFY: N | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Ah yeah, I have heard of MythTV, heard good things about it. I might still go with a WinXP Media Center set up, since my linux skills suck (outside of flashing new firmware onto my wireless router). I've been holding out for better HD tuner cards. When I last looked into it earlier this year, there were still issues with being able to record and decode true HD, even with OTA HD, but people were talking about something new on the horizon that might fix that. And I think the change over to pure digital OTA next February might change things too. Right now my whole TV set up is digital (HDMI, fiber optic sound, etc -- but component cables for the DVD player, since that's the native form
), and I love all the TV shows we record in HD on our cable DVR right now. I would hate to lose the better picture, just so we could ditch the cable. :P

But you can learn! google can answer pretty much every problem you run into. You just have to learn what to look for. I don't know why but I find that stuff sorta fun. Having a problem but knowing there's a solution I just have to find the info. HD ticks me off though. If I ever upgrade my satellite plan to HD then I can't connect that to mythtv cause of encryption. So annoying. I'm paying for the thing. I'm using the converter box. Let me use the signal how I want.

So the other day I was trying to get the proprietary nvidia drivers working but my X11 server wouldn't come up. I eventually googled up a utility that does some bug reporting. Found out that it couldn't map some registries because the malloc was failing. I had to track down where grub does it's linux invocation and add vmalloc=256MB to give it some extra space and everything worked fine.

I think I would also have to go with no snow. Growing up in Oregon it was always fun when it did end up snowing -- I remember one year when I was the last of the kids up, helping my parents wrap presents late on Christmas Eve, when we looked outside and realized it had been snowing for awhile. It snowed pretty heavy through the night, and was a nice surprise for my siblings on Christmas morning.
Now that I'm an adult though, I can see all the downsides of snow too. Hubby grew up in Wyoming, and is quite glad to live in a place where we get snow about once every 100 years. In fact, I had gone nearly a decade without even seeing snow, until I went to Utah for my brother's wedding last January. I don't handle the cold well, I tend to be less dexterous in the winter anyway, so if I can avoid being out in snow/sleet/ice, I'm much happier. We fly into Austin on Christmas Eve every year, so if it wants to start snowing after that I'm fine with it, since we won't leave the house for a few days anyway. I would rather have a white Christmas than a warm (75 degrees+) Christmas, but 45 and and cloudy is fine with me too.
So how is everyone's Christmas shopping going? I'm getting close to done, though I need to get a couple of things for hubby still. It's his birthday today though, so I've been focused on that. It's weird, his birthday has always been two weeks before Christmas (duh), but each year it feels like that's a shorter and shorter time period...

) and there is a few things for the family I still have to find. I'm trying real hard not to buy any toys for the kids but there are some truly awesome things at the local ranch supply/hardware store that kids just love. As a plus I drew the department boss for the secret Santa dealy and there is always something for her to bich about so my gift, regardless of how cool, will probably suck.
I do still have some money left over from the inlaws gift cash so some of it will have to go for ME gifts.

Hey all. Stopped by here to say hi and got sidetracked by another fucking "fan-made Firefly MMOG" thread, which finally prompted me to come of the closet and say what I do for a living. I design MMOGs for a living, and have for a very long time. The number of people who think they can somehow do a better job than the professionals drives me batty, and this particular topic just hit me in the wrong mood.
Every other time I've talked about my professional career online, I've been mobbed by questions and request, so if I disappear for awhile that's why. All my work is still under very strict NDAs, which is another reason I just avoid talking about it, but seriously these people need to shut up and sit down.
Sigh, anyway. I went to the company Christmas party on Friday, and somehow managed to get my dress completed in time. I know a couple of people were taking pictures at the party but I haven't seen any of me yet. If nothing else I'll put the dress back on and take pictures myself and post them here, if anyone is still interested.
And now I am off to do a bit more Christmas shopping. I had the perfect gift picked out for hubby, and then found out that my parents already bought him something similar. Sigh, it just really isn't my day today.
Oh and MsA, I would totally tell her boss. That shit is unacceptable. But then I'm in a bad mood, so maybe don't trust my opinion right now.

HUGS CK I'd love to see a pic. I know you looked amazing
Now tell me what a MMOG is...'cause I have no idea
I know NDA ( non disclosure agreement) but the rest is gibberish
So no disappearing.. if you get mobbed hide in ehre and we'll beat them down for you

Lol MsA, MMOG = massively multiplayer online game. Like World of Warcraft or Everquest. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massively_multiplayer_online_game
I'll see what I can do about getting a picture of the dress.

MMORPG = massively multiplayer online role playing game. Basically thousands or millions of people all playing a never ending game of Dungeons and Dragons together online. MMOG is used as a less role playing specific acronym, or to include other massively multiplayer games, like RTS (real time strategy), FPS (first person shooter), simulations, sports, etc. I've worked with the guy who coined the term MMOG/MMORPG back in the mid 90s.

Wow it's been quiet in here recently. Where did everyone else go? Have people left for vacation already?
FLT, I'm totally jealous on the FPS front. Like a lot of women, FPSs make me terribly nauseous. Some of the less jerky ones I can play for about a half an hour before I start to get motion sick, but others like Portal (which I *really* wanted to play!) made me sick just glancing at hubby's screen while he played. Sigh. I've heard you can train your brain out of the motion sickness, but it takes a lot of time and consistency, both things that I'm typically short on.

lol, yeah, i'm one of those girls who likes to shoot things XD hence me being anxious about being twenty for the next ten months >< till i can get my permit
too bad about the motion sickness bit :\ sry to hear it. fortunately the only time i get motion sick is when i read in the car >< which is a bummer for me cuz on long trips i get bored and usually cure boredom by reading
ooooooooh yes, portal. i havent played but i've watched my boyfriend play. looks way hard, i'd probably get frustrated after ten minutes XD i'm assuming you've heard the credits song XD best credits song *ever*

Yeah nothing else makes me motion sick, not even reading in the car. Just FPS games. :P

ugh, so now im watching my eleven year old toy poodle try to sneak his way around my parents house (where he lives, family dog) after eating god knows how much chocolate out of a bag my mother left on the floor. he's been puking for about an hour and a half/two hours now, and wont stay in the kitchen where its easy to clean up. he keeps running to the carpet to puke and i have to chase him and drag him back to the kitchen to throw up there. im doing this while im trying to make dinner cuz neither of the rents are home, but he wont stay and is being a very bad boy about it.
so now i've tied him by his leash to the handle on the oven door, which is juuuuuuust far enough in the kitchen that he cant reach any carpeted surfaces @_@
he's currently standing at the extent of his leash by the nearest piece of carpet in the house (just baaaaaarely out of his reach, thankfully) and is making odd noises probably because his throat hurts and he still feels sick >< but the stubborn thing wont come back to give himself some slack on the leash. i feel sorry for the poor thing, but my god he's not cooperating @_@

FLT chocolate is poisonous for dogs... you need to take him to the vet or he can suffer heart damage ...hugs
ok morning all.. so here's some fun. The IT people changed my email to the right name, but now I can't log in 'cause I don't have the password and won't until I get to work at about 3 pm today
