They were sitting on base, shining their tanks and dreaming of the day they could legally step off base and support state and local relief agencies....

The role of the Federal Government is very limited in these situations. The role of the regular military is almost none in these situations. After all, this has traditionally been a National Guard function.

The idea here is for a Federal Rapid Response force to be available for large scale disasters, such as Katrina, that exceed the ability of local Guard units to respond and to bridge the gap between the arrival of supporting Guard units from other states as well as other forms of disaster aid such as the Red Cross and FEMA.

Such a unit could have played a decisive role in the New Orleans disaster, if for no other reason then to show a government responding as best it could instead of a government unable or unwilling to act.

I note for the record that you would not have been bussed to the Superdome, it was a voluntary shelter of last resort. If your decided not to go, you'd either have been smart enough to find your own way out, hold out on your own until relief arrived, or been sitting on your roof waving at the Coast Guard helicopters to save your dumb ass...or been that dead fella on the side of the road.

Or maybe your right, if so there sure are a lot of deserted military bases sitting around. Try driving onto Fort Bragg and see if a fella in a uniform is there to stop you (along with about 25,000 of his buddies).

I note for the record that 1st Cavalry Division, from Fort Hood Texas, was redeployed back home from Iraq in April of 2005, several months prior to Katrina. I note further that 1st Cav headed Joint Task Force Katrina, the military logistical support operation for Katrina that was activated a week or so into the disaster. Well done 1st Cav: http://www.hood.army.mil/1stcavdiv/news/2005/Sept05/sept2_2005.htm

Thats why they are building them out of existing combat brigades. These will not be new units, they will be old units with a new mission profile.

I note for the record that the primary mission of the Army...the entire Armed Forces of the United States...is domestic security (against invasion or rebellion). Its that whole "all enemies, foriegn or domestic" bit. Adding disaster relief to the definition of Contintinental Defense, is no real stretch.

"the entire Armed Forces of the United States...is domestic security (against invasion or rebellion)."

Or rebellion.....wow.

Just. Wow.

If thats what they are teaching recruits...its worse than I imagined.

I had always hoped and believed that if it came to a civil war, the armed forces would NOT fight. As they are meant to protect the citizens, not kill them.

That someone would be like "Hey wait a minute, we arn't rolling into Bumfuck Ohio and holding the people there hostage...thats what the Nazis would have done."

But if it comes to it, and the Army decides its going to oppress the citizens...well, fuck. We would have to fight them too.

"Its that whole "all enemies, foriegn or domestic" bit."

The domestic part was intended as a clause against a tyrannical government. Not the people.

So why not have these guys operate under DHS, rather than the military? I'm all for military airlifts of supplies, but why not keep the guys on the ground civilians (like the rest of us)? Personally, I just think this a reaction to the shit the Feds took for hiring Blackwater to provide security after Katrina.

I'm just worried about mission creep. I know the military is more efficient at this sort of thing, but efficiency at the cost of civil rights is not a price worth paying.

And you're dead right. Well done 1st Cav.

Mercy is the mark of a great man.
Guess I'm just a good man.
Well, I'm alright.

I did find a few things way more useful than catterwalling about soldiers, tanks, conspiracy stuff, and what not.

Tips for a Nuclear Attack

Did you know that the most fallout resistant vegetables are wheat, corn, and rye. That means if you have any cows left, you could potentialy have Pastrami sandwiches before you run out of canned goods.

Also, after Jan 20th you will be henceforth, surviving "Nuclear" attacks...we will all let Nukeyooler relax in it's incorrect obsolescence. I don't know why you Conservatives reinforced that one so long.

Horde all the canned foods you can.

Build a bomb shelter, then be ready to deny your neighbors access to it by shooting them. Some of them will be very convincing.

Horde a bunch of pot because you'll need it to generate an appetite while you're feeling like a cancer ridden rat in a storm drain wallowing in your own excrement for six months.

Include a supply of potassium iodide in high amounts in your sickening bomb shelter.

After the attack, disease is liable to be epidemic for survivors of a nuclear war are malaria, plague, shigella, typhoid fever, typhus, tuberculosis, diptheria, hepatitis, whooping cough, yellow fever, influenzas, and meningitis. But thats all

Then comes the really fun part, when six months has passed, hump like monkeys and begin the process of recreating civilization. Make your many offspring do all the work rebuilding.

Sounds like a plan. Grab your TV remote control and your cell phone and go out and fight em.

Or bury your head in the sand (or up Bush's ass), keep telling yourself that all is well and those troops kicking down your door are doing it for your own protection, and if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear, and then go vote for the nearest Republican, because as they'll be quick to tell you, it's not fascism when THEY do it!

Yeah, like Elian Gonzalez , or Waco ! Oh, wait. That was under Clinton, a Democrat. Where's that happened under a Republican again ( Not saying it never has, or WOULD never, just askin' )

Yeah...had a Civil War. You might have heard about it. Seems a bunch of folks wanted to go off and start their own country, Lincoln sent in the army to stop them.

Before that a bunch of folks wanted to not pay their taxes...Washington personally led the army out to Pittsburg to explain things to them.

Seems the Consitution says something about ensuring domestic tranquility and common defense. And then theres Article 4, Section 4, "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence."

Wow...I'm just talking crazy with my history and reading the document crap.

Oh bullshit Hero - while they were oh so unable to render assistance, they were oh-so-able to go in there and fucking confiscate peoples means of defense while leaving them to the wolves to plunder, weren't they ?

And the 82nd Airborne was right there with em, too.

You wanna know what to DO about it, I done already told ya, Psy-Ops, folks - get in their HEADS and dump sand in the gears, short of sensory deprivation there's no defense and done RIGHT, when some prick does give the order to harm civvies, it won't be the civves staring down a gunbarrel.

More detail I will not give at this time, but a little forum necromancy would find quite a bit, I'm sure.
