Since it needs to be hypoallergenic, I think the bichon frise is cute. It's all fluffy ^_^![]()

Huskies are hypoallergenic too. And they're black AND white!

Sadly, they SHED a ton of hair, and D.C. not exactly being in the upper latitudes, a Chicago winter might be what huskies would be best suited.

I always wanted an Airedale when I was a kid, and Irish Terriers are great too. My grandparents used to have an Irish Wolfhound, and he was absolutely the sweetest doggie in the world. Of course, on the other hand, his idea of playtime was tackling you then proceeding to lick you to death (provided you didn't drown from the gallons of slobber first). Ah, good times.

Well,I'm not one for tiny dogs. You can't go out and run with them and roll down a hill. If it's little you might roll over it. Ya know?
You can't go wrong with a Retriever. They're friendly, loyal, and easy to train. A loved retriever will be by your side always. It might shed a bit though.
The best dog I had was a German Shepherd mix. Fiercely protective but easily taught who was friendly. She was super smart and could control herself indoors better than our large retriever could.
My gut said a Springer Spaniel, but it's been done a time or two before so that's right out. A Beagle would be fun and easy care.
Hrm. How about a Schipperke?
I think they should get a mutt. Most of my pets have had unknown origins and they were all awesome dogs.

I vote Belgian Malinois. Of course, I'm biased - I'm lucky enough to have one of a pair that were dumped at my old job when they were about 4 weeks old.
Secret Service uses them because they're smart as a whip, loyal, and smaller and easier to transport than their German Shepherd cousins. Malinois only get up to around 45 pounds, but still retain all the traits of German Shepherds. Mine learns tricks very easily, often in as little as one or two tries. She's very "treat-oriented".
As a bonus, the Obamas' new puppy could actually be a Secret Service dog, fully trained to take care of the girls. Of course, no special training is needed - they're fiercely protective of the people they're attached to anyway.
