Firefly (Specifically Ariel) related Weirdness

My friend and I were riding to the mall yesterday, where she was going to use a gift certificate (she exchanged a few credits with her sister for the certificate) so she is all worried that someone will "catch" her using someone else's gift card, so the whole time she is going "it was a gift from someone who couldn't use it" over and over. Just like Jayne in "Ariel" with the cortical electrodes. So she finds her item and pays for it, clerk rings it up no problem. All of a sudden she blurts out "it was a gift from someone who couldn't use it" for no reason- just like Jayne in Ariel!!
Anyway, I hope I made this sound as funny as it really was 
Why doesn't it ever go smooth?
