We can ponder a situation between two of my friends. They've been roommates since college. So, I think they're going on 8 years of living together now. Anyway one of them is totally taking advantage of the other. She pays rent late. Let's chores like taking out the trash or cleaning the dishes go for so long that my other friend just gives in and takes care of it do to smell/annoyance. It's to the point where the friendship is on a razor's edge.

To me it seems pretty simple. The one friend is totally clueless that this stuff is driving the other friend nuts. Friend #1 feels like if she sits friend #2 down to really explain how this is making her feel that friend #2 will start to cry or something and she doesn't want to deal with that. Friend #1 also feels like if friend #2 only changes her ways because of a confrontation then she's not a real friend anyway.

So my ponder is about that. Are there things that "a real friend" just has to be able to figure out on their own or is that too much to ask?

That seems like too serious of a ponder for a Monday Zeek.

Well what you disgruntled friend could do to drop a hint is move the dirty dishes to either the other friends shower or bedroom floor. Nothing gets a point across like dirty smelly dishes laying about!

Other than that....

They got to be friends because they liked to talk to each other. Sounds like someone has forgotten that.

Here's the thing if Friend 1 isn't aware there's a problem how can she be expected to change... I can totally tell these are girls because of the psychic friend thing.. only women would expect someone to " just know" how they feel and change because they psychically sense the person is upset...open your damn mouth and tell someone it bothers you or keep it shut and suck it up.
However if your friend is worried about a confrontation... why not tell her via note or email. Write down what bothers her, why it bothers her,and what she'd like the other person to do differently in a calm non accusatory way ( use I statements like " I really need the rent paid on time because it makes me stressed or causes problems. I need to live ina clean hosue where work is shared equally...etc")
If person 2 is really a good friend, she'll applogize and change... otherwise get a new roommate or deal.

I agree with both of you guys. And of course you are correct MsB they're both women.

The talking thing has been at a minimum because Friend #1 is getting pretty serious in a relationship. So, she's been spending more time with her guy than with her roommate.

The other part that makes it difficult is that most of the "little things" that annoy her have been going on for those whole 8 years they've been roommates. It's just recently that she's been doing the late rent thing and that sorta opened the flood gates. Now all of a sudden the dishes are like nails on a chalk board to Friend #1.

Just drives me a bit nuts cause I agree about the issues not going away without some communication. I thought for a while about telling friend #2 what was up but I decided I should just let them figure it out on their own. If I get involved friend #1 might feel betrayed that I passed on info that was pretty much said in confidence. Bah women. :-P

Here's a ponder: Why are there stupid people in the world? And why, god, why are there so many of them??

As far as weather, it's 75 and sunny here, of course. We could use some rain, given that the Santa Ana Winds fire season is upon us, but I think I'm going to go take advantage of the weather and go out to the pool and get some sun. I have a weird tan line I need to get rid of for my Halloween costume... I love SoCal.

Why ...I don't know Ck but I have been plagued by this question for years. I think it truly explains the failure of Firefly.. it was too damn smart.

Also I am intrigued by this thing you call " tan lines" ... are you going for a spray or are you going for the entertain the neighbors with nudity?

I have no such things, but that is because I am pigment challenged and unable to tan. Even if by accident I get burned it fades to white within days... sigh

Lol MsB. No what I mean is, I have tan lines from my swimsuit, and then another tan line from my tank tops that I wear when I go to Disneyland or whatever. I'm not describing it really well, but basically there's an area that's covered by my tanks but not covered by my swimsuit, so it's tan but not quite as tan as everywhere else. Since the neckline of my Halloween costume is a bit more like my swimsuit neckline, you can totally see the line from my tank tops, but not the "holy crap, that's the color you started out at??" line from my swimsuit.

My hubby is also "pigment challenged" and tends to freckle more than tan. But he's found that if he starts with really small amounts of time (I think he started at 10 minutes maybe?) and builds his way up, he can actually get a nice looking tan.

Oh, and before anyone freaks out: I'm chronically vitamin D deficient, and have done a lot of reading into both the dangers of vitamin D deficency and skin cancer, and their relation to tanning/burning. My opinion is that for me, with a huge amount of autoimmunity and no family history of cancer whatsoever, the risks associated with not getting sun far, far outweigh the risks of sun exposure. The reading I've done has also pointed to data that says that the skin cancer risk is from burning, not natural tanning (ie, actual sunlight, no tanning oil). So I'm very careful about the amount of time I spend outside, and I make sure I never burn, but for me getting sun is an aboslute must.

(Sorry about that, but I've had people flip out too many times not to put the standard disclaimer up pre-emptively. )

CK your rant in the 30 minute of Joss's time thread left nothing else to say. Can you try to be less all encompassing in the future? :-P

I'm guessing the thread starter may be among your idiots that you're annoyed by. At least in his first post he mentioned that if anything we owe Joss our time rather than the other way around, but he still wanted 30 minutes.

My approach is I've totally given up hope that we'll ever see more Firefly/Serenity. If something gets done then it'll be a happy surprise. If not then I'm already resigned to that fate and can live with it. I just don't think petitions or postcards or online polls are going to do any good.

I wouldn't call it free money. It just means we're more in debt to the Chinese and with their economy beginning to slow as well they may not have any more money to lend us. These "bail outs" can't continue forever. Plus I'm not too fond of the first round anyway. They're bailing out the people who were irresponsible in the first place. How about giving the money to responsible people and having them spend the money wisely and get our economy on the right track.

I think it was AIG who went right out and spent millions on a retreat for their execs and some top customers to go on a hunting weekend in the UK or something. Way to spend that loan wisely folks.

Grrrrr I'm not the biggest fan.

Yeah though they did have the best first date story to tell the kids. That was just such a smooth move on Ted's part IMO.

I thought the episode was really funny in a lot of parts though. I don't know why but I loved the Robin "you tried to make it rain for me" and Ted's instantaneous "I DID make it rain" and Robin's immediate "It was a coincidence" like they'd had that argument a million times before. And the crazy hot scale floating by in the background of Barney working out the equation to sleep with Robin. And Barney riding the tricycle at the end. Such a good episode.

Okay, I kinda ran off and did a rant, if you're the type that likes holidays don't read!

Select to view spoiler:

For me, even though I've only visited Nevada a couple times, all Halloween is to me is Nevada's state day- I just don't buy into Halloween crap, like passing out candy to random kids going around begging for candy. It teaches the kids to beg for something, and they'll get it, and to me that's very very wrong. And I just don't really think it's an occasion for a party or anything- though I tend to not like other holidays like Christmas, or Easter day, yada. I just don't buy into holidays, they're alot of effort and people get crabby since they're busy with all the preperations for the holiday, and then it comes around and it's nothing special, just a bit more ceremony before you have to pack crap up until the next holiday. Only exception to this dislike is birthdays, since you plan basically whatever you want for the day, you decide who you wanna invite, and you don't have to invite reliatives and people you don't like just because it's politically polite, and you don't have to stick to a generic plan that society says is the way to spend a particular holiday.

This year I get four days of Halloween/Autumn festivities. Wednesday I get to work the Tribal haunted house. Thursday night is trick or treating. Friday is a special day with awesome activities. Saturday is the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City. This year is sure to be Teh Awesum.

Yes...yes I do. I want that "Come on, if you don't laugh it just seems mean" one on a shirt. That's my style of humor right there.

I might have to pick one of them out for my brother too since he's a HIMYM fan too. He'd never expect something like that for christmas.

Which leads right into holidays. Sure holidays can be a pain. Especially the younger you are. They're forced socialization with old people that your parents are close to so they just assume somehow you're close to these people too even though you've only seen them for very brief portions of your life and they're mostly just strangers. (take that sentence structure) At the same time they break up the monotony of the year. Gotta go find the Lorne quote from Angel where he explains that the changes are what make life interesting cause one note that just goes on and on isn't music it's just noise. The holidays are a good way for everyone to break up the daily noise and do something else for a little while.

Yeah, but that's why you do random stuff, like go out for dinner, every time you feel like the need for a break. You don't go through "baking turkey cooking shit being in the kitchen for a day making a dinner and helping mom out cooking even though she gets frustrated at you because you're not telepathic and can't figure out what the hell she wants you to do, so you can get talked at by your grandpa while trying to choke down you don't really like but have to eat anyways because it's 'traditional'". And that's just Thanksgiving- Christmas involves getting a tree, cleaning up pine needles all the time, trying to get the cats away from the tree, having to re-arrange furnature in order to fit the tree, eating another traditional dinner that isn't fun, having to write a whole bunch of thank-you notes, desposing of the tree afterwards, cleaning up the pine needles one last time, putting away all the ornaments. Easter isn't actually that bad anymore, since I'm no longer required to celibrate it (though it's teh holiday that spoiled Easter and Santa Claus, discovered the hunted eggs in the fridge when sent to fetch something else)

I love Halloween it's really the only honest holiday left... no family pressure, no fake religious overtones, just simple joy of pretending( if only for a moment) that you are a fairy or a ninja or whatever and the fun of running around asking for a treat and being given one...just 'cause you asked

Plus of course I just love to dress up:)
I am very much looking forward to Halloween....

Bunch O' devil worshiping sinners on this thread......

Nuthing wrong with Christmas, even with the extra work. Of Course, having kids makes it more fun. Looking forward to the 1 year old ripping paper etc.
BTW, if you don't know me, jk on the devil worship, but you all ARE sinners

my cousin mike always liked thanksgiving, cuz it was the least commercialized. and judging from all the excellent food that goes along with the holiday, i have to agree ^_^

Oh come on that's no where near the same. I remember back in the dorms in college when christmas would roll around we decorated the crap out of our hallway. Red and Green paper on the regular lights. Strings of christmas lights all along the ceilings. Christmas decorations stuck to the wall. It brought at least a little bit of smile to my face when I was trudging off to class at the crack of dawn in the freezing cold or coming back from an exam that did everything it could to break your spirit. The traditions and everyone coming together has a lot more power than going out to dinner.

I have a question... centers around this forum, specifically...: Why

((rant))

THE

FUCK

do people come to Fireflyfans.net to spam the forum with mindless, argumentative, hateful political bullshit? I don't understand at all. At a fan site for a sci-fi television show, what the fuck do they hope to accomplish with these "discussions"? Look at the "most recent threads" list and the majority are political bullshit threads, and not because it's an election year. One side spews some ridiculous claim aimed at infuriating the other side; the other side responds in kind; lather, rinse, repeat. The racist, violent, hateful vitriol that these people spew on this forum on a constant basis absolutely disgusts me. Are they too insecure - or too ignorant - to find an actual politics-based forum where they could have a civilized discussion about these same things with knowledegable, mature people? Or is that too threatening, to have to go word-to-word with someone who actually knows what the fuck they're talking about, and who doesn't need to resort to petty, childish name-calling and outrageous, irresponsible claims to discuss their viewpoints?

Seriously... What. The. Fuck???

It makes me angry that all these threads and their intolerant instigators and perpetuators are turning this forum into a wretched place to visit, with their malevolence spammed everywhere you look...

((end rant))

...........NVG...

...sometimes, you have these flashes of absolute crystal clear brilliance...

...it is nothing short of fantastic.

That certainly explains the "why," but not exactly the "why here."

((shrug))
((sigh))

Have a good weekend, kiddo. ^^

I would say it's because this site is pretty open to whatever gets put here, not heavily moderated, and it's taken advantage of. Real world discussion is one area I steer clear of, should be a subset of Troll Country, imho.
