Nertz, Rallem... I used Neo Office, the Mac version of Open Office. The missus, who uses a PC, was able to open and read the file. What kind of error/message did you get?

FillyGirl, I used to live in Hawai'i for several years when I was a kid. I didn't appreciate it (dumb kid) until after mom moved us back to the mainland.

Then mom treated the missus and me to a vacation there back in 2005, and we both fell in love with the place all over again. We've been plotting our return, ever since. A year ago August we bought an acre plot of land on the Big Island, and went back this past March to start looking at building a home. As for employment, there are a LOT of opportunities for entrepreneurial ventures, particularly if your business isn't location based (i.e., internet).

Keep in mind that we bought our acre on the Big Island, which is the most rural/least-developed in Hawai'i; it cost us $40kUS. The opportunity exists for being off-grid (you have to be, for water and sewer, where we are), especially if solar gets any better by the time we build.

Seriously(sp), how far away from the beaten path(I know what the big island is like, been there) is your land? I see a paved road, excellant, it looks BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! I see the orchids too! Can you give me the name of your real estate agent? Oh and is it still true that you can't really 'buy' the land, the state leases it to you for 99 years or something like that.

Things are getting better all the time over at weekinwhedon. We gained 70 votes today, Angel only 1. Hmmm. We 1014 behind now. Them Angel fans got no stamina. They probably ain't pretty either.

At BBC, we broke 40 percent (40.04 to be exact). There were 47 votes cast, and we apparently got all but two of them. Gawd, I hope the Star Wars fans don't get wind of this, and pile on. But they'll probably lose interest quickly, while we do the old "tortise and hare" thing to 'em.

You can buy land in Hawai'i just like anywhere else, FG. In fact, we bought our acre from some Japanese investors who had never even seen the land, more's the pity. That spot is in Hawai'ian Paradise Park, about 20 minutes down the road from Hilo, the biggest city that side of the island (which has a WalMart and a mall, but still manages to have a very small-town feel).

However, HPP doesn't have many paved roads; what you see is graded volcanic earth, which does alright; there's a paving program going on, but it'll take time to reach every side street.

Our real-estate agent was Denise Nakanishi:

She and her daughter, Mealoha, took excellent care of us, a year ago August, and I highly recommend her.

If you're interested, I can also suggest some books you might want to read about living in Hawai'i; there are a lot more factors than just cost of living, and not everyone finds island living to their taste.

You can buy land in Hawai'i just like anywhere else, FG. In fact, we bought our acre from some Japanese investors who had never even seen the land, more's the pity. That spot is in Hawai'ian Paradise Park, about 20 minutes down the road from Hilo, the biggest city that side of the island (which has a WalMart and a mall, but still manages to have a very small-town feel).

However, HPP doesn't have many paved roads; what you see is graded volcanic earth, which does alright; there's a paving program going on, but it'll take time to reach every side street.

She and her daughter, Mealoha, took excellent care of us, a year ago August, and I highly recommend her.

If you're interested, I can also suggest some books you might want to read about living in Hawai'i; there are a lot more factors than just cost of living, and not everyone finds island living to their taste.

Ray, yes tell me what you think I should read, and I was on Remax's site last night looking at what they have. I saw several lots for sale under $50k,...one I was looking at was on Hy 200, down the road from Hilo, it appeared to be in the middle of the island and not too close to the volcaino...is your property in that area?

Well, it'd be shiny to eventually have you as a neighbor, FG!

I'll have to assemble my library of resources and let you know the best ones. Cheap lots ($25k+) are available, but they tend to be further from Hilo, which can be an issue of convenience and resources. HPP is the best-developed, growing community in the Puna district (and forget about the Kona side of the island; too expensive!), and the best compromise among a number of factors, including price, available services (cable is available in the part closer to the main road, and power if you don't plan to go solar), as well as relative crime rate (mostly low, with very little violent crime).

I'll see about suggesting some references for you, soon.

Oh, did I mention the weather? When we went there in August 2007 to buy our lot, the folks we talked to said it was the hottest summer they remembered: In the low to mid 80s. The Hilo side gets a good amount of rain, but fairly reliably, the heavy showers are after dark, so it's very nice. You can get pretty much anything to grow there, too!

The pattern is pretty consistent. We start out ahead on Monday, and Jericho ends up ahead by the end of the week. The surge to pass by a comfortable margin (i.e., one which Firefly couldn't beat on short notice) came a little earlier, this weekend. It appears that someone wanted to be sure that Jericho was well ahead before the last minute. Makes it looks less fishy, I guess.

That's okay. Firefly has not institutionalized cheating as a tactic, so our score is legitimate. That means we beat anyone whose score is founded on illegitimate votes (votes cast more than once on TV Tally in any given six-hour period).

At weekinwhedon we made a comeback, the Angelites getting only five votes, 17 for us. So we are only behind 997. Nice to know there are still Angel fans out there who care enough to come after us.
