Riverlove has got the right idea. McCain doesn't need a heavy weight like Biden to prop up a weak resume like Obama. He can go for a relatively unknown VP like Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. She's a great spokesperson for energy independence and the polls are going heavily against Obama's and his delusional fantasy energy proposal. This was a huge strategic blunder on Obama's part and should assure victory for McCain.
p.s. It will be interesting to find out how many homes Biden owns. Bet it's more than two.

"And should assure victory for McCain." I'm reading this sentiment a lot today and I just don't see where they get it.
McCain's got nothin'.
He's an also-ran who won his party's nomination while all the vastly more interesting candidates got burned for one reason or another--but NOT because McCain was the better man. He's got no coherent platform, he's done nothing but negative ads against Obama and that works very well in the short term, but it won't last--the lasting impression will be of a nasty, pointless campaign. It didn't work when Hillary did it (and she was a FAR superior contender than McCain) and it won't work for him.
Biden is the expected choice. A relatively conservative (not politically, I mean conservative as in, not risky) choice in an otherwise thoroughly groundbreaking campaign.
And McCain is not gonna pick a woman from Alaska (this is the GOP--their great skill is underestimating the electorate, not genuine innovation or risk). He's gonna pick the Mormon, and that WILL assure victory for Obama.

Nice post, HK, but I haven't seen too much of the "This should assure victory for McCain"-sentiment you spoke of. If anything, I'm a little surprised at how receptive people are to this choice. While on the one hand, it's a safe choice, on the other, it's also a bit brave, since Biden's mouth can be a risk - not that I disagree with too many thing's he says, but you've seen how Republicans react when somebody does some real straight-talking, for instance when Wesley Clark did it.
I think that there are two VP choices that McCain can make that could turn out to be dangerous, those are Palin and Powell. I'm not sure how seriously Powell's being considered, or if he even wants it, and the power-abuse scandal surrounding Palin at the moment might disqualify her (it'd certainly disqualify any Democrat). If it turns out to be Mittens, then it'll be a bad choice for him.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying Biden is a bad choice for the Democrat party, just for Obama. If the Dem's had wanted Biden they would have chosen him in the primaries. I think if I was forced at gun point to pick a Dem to be Pres. Biden would be one of my top choices. The problem for Obama is that he looks like a light weight standing next to Biden. Why would Obama want to emphasize his weakest point. If the Dem's flipped the ticket they'd win in a landslide, but as it stands it just looks silly.

What's the over/under on McCain saying something stupid first?
Something along the lines of not disagreeing that we need to reinstate the draft. Or, when asked about his housing situation, saying, "I'll have to get back to you on that". How many of you don't know how many homes you own?
And then this morning, asked to clarify, this guy who never, ever runs on his POW status responded, "Well, for five and a half years, I didn't have a kitchen table or a chair." I guess he was talking about his time at the Naval Academy, huh?

We should take one of the debates and modify the format so the participant must drink a shot before answering the question - and make it at least three hours long.
I've always felt that if you really wanted to find the truth of a man, get him good and drunk and encourage him to pour his heart out to the empty glasses.
Works even better if the bottle you're pouring YOUR rum from, is actually full of distilled water.
