See that happenedto me, but when it did I was grateful to the cat.
Bought 2 gerbils and was assured they were male. Suddenly poof there were babies, and more babies, and more babies ( despite separating them and confining them and all other stuff) so by the 5th litter I was having nightmares about gerbils coming down in the rain and having to find homes for them all... so really the cat did us a huge favor:)

I think my mom might have accidentally on purpose let the cat in. She has an extreme aversion to any mouse like animal. We sometimes sort of accidentally on purpose let them out of the cage to play and they would escape and then "sneak" up on my mom.

Bought a house once. An OK house, but it had this wee problem with the presence of cockroaches. Not so bad, as the roachies appeared willing to confine themselves to the kitchen sink. Still, roachies, ugh!
Many chemistry derived roachie-elimination adventures later resulted in evolved roachies having a good time gettin' high, and their population, in fact, not so much diminished as went the other way.
Winter came. Kinda cold outdoors, so the local mice population moved in to the shelter with central heating. A good thing, in that the mice, go figure, feasted on the roachies to the point of roachie anhilation. So, no more cockroaches. But: mice. Mice ate rice, mice pooped all over the kitchen cupboards, mice scared the human inhabibitants with their micey shenanigans.
Solution: one (1) cat.

No. And you know what's worse? The cat smells like cumin.
