It just struck me - Firefly is in the same 'universe' as Buffy and Angel.
The Apocalypse came -- that is why there is "The Earth That Was".
Angel and the rest finally 'failed' and the Apocalypse happened. Just after man colonized the moon and probably Mars - I would bet. Say 2090 something...
What do you think?
Has anybody else postulated this?

I've actually thought this might be a possibility. However, you have to take the Melaka Fray comic into consideration. Someone should come up with a Timeline merging the Buffyverse and the Fireflyverse.

I am embarrased to admit I have not seen nor heard of the Melaka Fray comic.

It's a pretty wicked slayer comic. Now all 8 issues are collected in a graphic novel, probably the best way to read a series. JW has hinted strongly he has more stories to tell in Mel's universe.

HUGE SPOILER WARNING - HUGE SPOILER WARNING -HUGE SPOILER WARNING - HUGE SPOILER WARNING - HUGE SPOILER WARNING
PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW THE ENTIRE STORYLINE!!!!
Melaka Fray
In the beginning, there were demons. They ruled this dimension as they did so many others. Eventually, as mortal animals evolved under protection of certain mages and loranities, the demons left. The Demons, most of them found more hospitable dimensions and left Earth to the mortals, for the most part. Some remained, hidden away. Some bred within the human community, their power weakened. Throughout generations, some assimilated. And some infected humans. It is not know when they first arrived, but the vampires were a plague. The elders of several villages met, calling for action. They invoked the strongest and most dangerous magicks they could summon, to create a power, a power that could fight the vampires. A power that lived in the body of a girl. The first Slayer was born. She fought, and died, and was succeeded by another, and another. Throughout time, always one. Always a woman. A warrior. They were trained, sought out and guided by Watchers, descendants of the shamans who created the first Slayer.
Then, in the twenty-first century there was a battle. A Slayer, possibly with some mystical allies faced an apocalyptic army of demons. And when it was done, they were all gone. All demons, all magicks, banished from this dimension. It is not known if the Slayer lived, but the demons being gone, she was the last to be called. The line did continue, there were girls with the power, but they were never called, never trained. The Council of Watchers fell to ruin, held together only by fanatics and fools. Those that believed the demons would return. Centuries of useless, obsessive waiting. Makes a human go insane.
Two hundred years had passed, and no one had been called to duty as a slayer. But then She was discovered. Melaka Fray. Both the ancient ones and the Watchers council had found her. The ancient ones knowing that the watchers had gone insane, felt they had to prevent Melaka's watcher from meeting up with her, for fear that she would get hurt. The ancient ones sent one of the only remaining demons, Urkonn to find her and stop the cycle that the watchers planned to start anew.
Meanwhile Melaka Fray, a professional "grabber" for the underworld of Haddyn, specifically Gunther the mutant fish, had just done her latest job, robbing an ancient amulet from the wall safe of a senator. Fray managed to dismantle the tracking monitors, but not without being spotted by the underworld boss, Ruebrin's "boys". The battle ensued leading Fray to jump off the roof, but managed to break her fall by landing on a flying car (ala Fifth element). Fray then continued her battle with the mercenaries on the ground and defeated them, warning what would happen if she crossed paths with them again.
Fray then joined up with Gunther, a person who was mutated either by the sun's radiation or by his parents, he ended up turning into a man-fish, who has been living in his headquarters in a gigantic fish-tank for some time now. Melaka is his main girl for getting the stuff he needs, and then he fences it and takes care of the business end. Gunther is known as the main underworld scourge of the West side of Haddyn (the futuristic world of Manhattan perhaps).
After leaving Gunther to return home, she was stopped dead in her tracks by the mysterious lurks. The lurks are diseased creatures of the night, who are a mystery and an unknown species to mankind. She's handled all sorts of trouble, but when it comes to lurks she freezes up, not knowing what to do, ever since that fateful day, when she went up against a lurk several years ago. Luckily, Fray was saved by a police officer, Erin Fray, Melaka's older sister, who scares off the lurks with her police car. Erin reveals that she's investigating a robbery and believes that Melaka had something to do with it. Melaka denied having any connections, and told Erin she didn't need someo

Buffy and Firefly are definately set in the same universe. Realised it just last night.
Buffy: "If you touch Xander again, I swear I will end you."
See, they even use the same vocabulary. I could so hear 'by my pretty floral bonnet' in there... Also in the same exchange the word onery came by.
Got to be the same universe. I don't believe in coincidences.
Edit: Might have been an in-joke. The exchange mentioned above was with that nasty preacher dude, Caleb.

I love Buffy and Fray and even Angel but Firefly set in that universe.
Eh - no.

I don't think Joss would be so anti using aliens if this is set in the Buffy verse

Why, Demons aren't aliens ... and meebe they were peculiar to Earth - like Earth was a nexus of planes, p'haps ...
Now that brings up Reavers - human replacements for Demons - nature abhors a vacuum in the 'circle of life and unlife', ya know!

I was planning a fanfic the other day where Mal had grown up on his ranch with someone who then got called to be a slayer.
It was a bit random but it had occured to me that they were set in the same verse.

CrevanReaver: When you post the entire story line of this excellent graphic book in a thread where at least one has owned up to not knowing about its existence, you REALLY ought to mark it clearly with spoiler warnings. If I hadn't already read it, I'd have been livid. Please go back and edit your post before more people unknowingly spoil the entire story for themselves.

But there are no slayers anymore - or rather there are bunches of them. Now that I think about it - how does this fit into Fray? Isn't there supposed to be a period of no slayers?
I think you'd have to say that the apocalypse happened and Buffy and Angel succeeded. Evil was vanquished and demons are somehow (even if temporarily) banned from our reality -- that's the only way to put all the series on the same timeline. However, I don't think that's what joss intended... and I don't think Firefly meshes with Fray.
thoughts?

Well, I personally can't really say whether Fray should or should not be considered canon.
It is not something that is filmed -- either TV or movie.
Heck - even Buffy the Series sorta ignores the predecessor movie of the same name.
OK, I'll go with the usual rule of thumb concerning canon {Until Mr. Weadon makes it official way or another
} - all literature: be it books, comics et al. part of the Expanded Universe - not quite canon ...
Just my perspective...

Actually, I think we can safely assume that any novels, comics, etc. that have been written by Joss Whedon himself ARE cannon, which would, in fact, make "Fray" official. The fact that Axcalibur makes it's first appearance in "Fray" lends credence to this.
It's like with Star Wars: All the books and comics are Expanded Universe, but if Lucas decided to write one himself, it would clearly be cannon!

It might have to be an alternate universe fic. Not that I'm actually going to write it but I was just thinking about writing it.
But the slayer in my fic could be one of the many. Isn't firefly set after fray? When there's only one slayer again. I have to say I'm not very familiar with the cannon here.
My opinion is that they're not the same verse but that it would be fun if it was. I could just imagine Mal being very confused when a girl with mystical powers turns up on his ship. Ooh wait he might have already done that.
Ooh now I'm thinking Alliance/watcher's council linkage? Could River be a Slayer? Ok I suspect not but you never know.

So I don't suppose anyone who has read the "Fray" series has noticed that Mel's universe and Firefly's, use some of the same slang? "Ruttin'" being an example. And I believe a "gorram" was used.

I think it's more like George Lucas's Star Wars & Willow universes. Two great tastes, but they don't go great together.
The similarity of styles are probably just beacause they were written by the same person.
When faced with a moral question I ask myself; "What would The Lone Ranger do?"

So, what? You're thinking Wolfram & Hart evolves into Blue Sun when the Circle of Thorns is taken out?
No. Not the same universe. Sorry. Buffy's final battle came & went, Spike was utterly destroyed & then brought back to flesh, and still there are demons & magic up to everyone's eyeballs. There is clearly no magic in the Firefly universe. If there was, it would have been used in the War.
