How did you discover Firefly?

Just wondered how everyone first came to discover the joy that is Firefly. I only discovered it a few years back around the time serenity came out it was more by word of mouth than on tv. Nothing was really advertised for it in the uk although it may of been on one of the cable channels like sci-fi or bravo when it first arrived on the scene. Took a chance and bought the dvd box set and fell in love with it from there, i think i watched the entire box set over two nights. The story and the characters just gripped me from the start. I was gutted though when they killed wash in serenity hes probably my favourite character followed by kaylee because shes kinda cute

Hey there MSC,

I first heard about FF back in 2002 when Fox (twew) first aired the promos for the new Joss Whedon series. What got me hooked was seeing the horses running free underneath what we now know as Serenity.

I always wondered why he didn't call it Serenity. I did not miss an episode. and when it was abruptly cancelled I was devastated. I really came to love those characters, plus I love a good sci-fi yarn involving some sort of fantasy woman butt-kicker who has secret "special" powers (plus she's cute too).

Joss spins a good yarn. My fav character was River, but I've come to really miss Wash. I think that the relationship between Zoe & Wash was one of the most special I've seen on TV in a long time. Saw the BDM with my son in 2005 and then discovered in late 2007 that there was a DVD set of the series and the rest is history.

I first learned of firefly via the movie serenity while on leave from Iraq. Fell in love with the movie and upon my return home found out about the tv show. Went to the store, bought the series and have watched an rewatched ever since.

Glad to say that I am now home for good, married to a fine firefly loving woman, and Kaylee was born on July 20th.

I was looking for some DVD's to purchase at Best Buy and saw Ron Glass on the box set of Firefly. Well I know Ron Glass as a great actor so I took the chance and bought the set. I am a Science Fiction fan anyway, so it was not a stretch for me to buy it. The rest is like everyone else here. I quickly realized I was watching an great show and wanted more. I searched out the internet and found this site. A home for Browncoats.

I've been a fan of Joss' since I first saw Buffy pilot. When Firefly First aired. I was with my friend in the hospital. We watched train job together and when Mal kicked Nishkas man into the engine we were hooked. I love new, different, and Awsome. Joss does all that very well.

I was watching an episode of Without A Trace where stupendously hot red-head was featured and I was immediately smitten with her, for obvious reasons. "She" being our favorite seductress/devil women, Christina Hendricks. In a flash I checked imdb to see what she had done. I saw the odd guest spot on TV series, most notably ER. I also she did a couple episodes of a show called Firefly. I also saw there were only 14 episodes so I thought I could knock it out quickly. This was about 2 and a half years ago. I've been hating those heartless bastards at F*X ever since.

Someone from another site (from another show) suggested that I watch this show, and because I trusted that person I thought to myself that, sure, one day if I come across the DVD set and I have nothing else to do I'll probably watch it. Few weeks later, by accident, I found the Firefly DVD set & Serenity at my brother's home, - so I decided it was fate and a sign, lol, and that I HAD to watch it. (As I posted in another thread - it only happened for me this year), but I haven't been able to look back since. When that person suggested I should watch the show and how special it was, I remember quietly thinking to myself that I doubted I would be so taken with a show that was cancelled after only one season etc.,....I can't believe how wrong I was, lol.

I surprised even myself because I never thought I would love a show so diverse (you know, a bit of western, a bit of sci-fi...horses and spaceships, slightly old-fashioned and slightly modern)and yet there is something so undefinably beautiful about this series. The chemistry between the cast on and off screen was a wonderfully sweet bonus.

In a way I'm glad I didn't know ANYTHING about the show before I watched it (I'm an avid hater of "spoilers" in any event) as it allowed me to be entranced by every scene without knowing what was to come next.

I loved all of the episodes, some more than others perhaps but seeing the episode "Out of Gas" made me into a Firefly fan for life.

I'm forever indebted to the person who introduced me to it.

And YES if anyone wants to know, I gave my brother his Firefly DVD set back and I have my own DVD set of Firefly and Serenity AND the original Soundtrack AND the Firefly Official Companion Vols I & II... lol

I got hooked on Buffy and Angel back in the summer of '05 while on extended vacation, and a friend of mine told me if I liked those shows, I should try Firefly. Best Buy had the DVD set on sale for $19.99, so I grabbed it.

It actually took me a little bit to figure it out. I was into The Train Job when I realized, "This is a WESTERN - with spaceships!" I wasn't thrilled about that idea, but I figured, what the hell, I'm not hating it, so I kept watching.

And when Mal kicked Niska's guy through the engine, I was hooked. It was one of those "Oh HELL no!" moments that caught me completely off guard, and I loved that a show could do something like that. I knew I was in for something unique, western or not...
