Bah I'm pulling issues over from the old thread. It's too complicated to me to keep both going. Besides I'm sort of hitting on a different point with this reply anyway.

See now that attitude seems offensive to me. Isn't there anything to be said for an equal partnership? Why would there be any topic where one person gets all the say? Would the woman's right go both ways? Could she go get artificially inseminated even if her partner doesn't want children or doesn't want any more?
Seems to me that both the man and the woman should have an equal part in parenting decisions. Yes, the woman does put her body through a lot, but that's far from "all the work" of raising a child.
I don't know why but that view just makes it sound like men are supposed to sit around waiting for a woman to tell them when she's decided she wants some sperm. Then we're supposed to spring into action and say "yes master" and stuff.
NOTIFY: N | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Zeek, I agree with you. I found that comment offensive as well. Kids aren't a woman's right anymore than a man's. They are a couple's right and the decision to be parents should be made as a couple, although we know that often doesn't happen. I'm soooo sick of hearing about adults the got pregnant 'by accident.'
I do have a friend who never wanted children. Her husband, the man she dated for 11 or so years desperately wanted them. IMO, it probably wasn't the best idea for them to get married or even stay together. However, she decided that she couldn't deny him a child. But man did she lay down the law. She set parameters on the whole ordeal. She wouldn't work (financially feasible for this couple), she would have a nanny three days a week for a few hours so she could do "her" things. and a few other rules I can't quite remember. Five years later, she's a very content mother of two. While she didn't necessarily want children, she wanted her husband to have them, and came up with a way that would work for both of them. And surprise of surprises, while she's not all 'I was always meant to be a mother', she does love being one.
And truth be told, I could probably have children in those circumstances. If I could still maintain a semblance of my life and pursue my goals, I don't think parenthood would be awful. I'm not immune to the wonders of yard apes. I think one of the coolest things is getting to show a child the world. But I am NOT up for parenthood they way most people do it these days. I could never define myself through my kids. I could never devote myself solely to them. I need more to be me.

I think the man can be just as involved in the parenting...my dad was always fantastic and we had dad weekends ( 4 kids so each kid got one weekend a month ) where we did stuff with dad while mom was doing stuff with the other kids.
It is true that statistically speaking women do end up with the majority of the cooking, cleaning, and day to day kid stuff, but that hardly means the dad isn't doing anything or isn't a partner in raising the kids...
I'm glad things worked out well for your friend Bug:)
Zeek..hmm well maybe it wasn't the best idea to tell her that a bunch of strangers were discussing her life...HUGS but you're definitely not a jerk
Like I said before I definitely think kids should be planned and not an "accident" what's with that anyway...you accidentally had sex?? You accidentally were too stupid to use birth control??

Long time lurker, but I'll chime in since this subject is near and dear to me.
Have to agree with Zeek. The notion that a man should have no rights is nonsense. Not only that, the idea itself also fuels the idea that he should have no responsibilities either. Which is equally nonsense.
My 2 kids (mostly grown now) are the most rewarding part of my life (but not all of it). Planning helps, but there is never a good time (financially or personally) to have kids--unless you're a multi-gazillionaire or something. You just have to want to do it, and you have to be willing to sacrifice... But you also have to take time for yourself too. But did I mention the sacrifice?
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
yeah there's sacrifice but there's also first words, tiny hands, new baby smell, little hugs, sunny smiles, sticky popsicle kisses...I can go on and on

As a four time new father, yes there are rewards for having kids, and yes they are a sacrifice. I haven't been swallowed up by them, still have my hobbies, interests, etc, just not as much time.
Kids are great, they are exasperating, but most of all, kids are kids.

So, there's another baby ponder. Why do you want or not want children? What is the point of having kids? Why would you not want kids?
I've talked about this a bit with "half-ass a kid" friend. We both think it's really weird when people talk about kids like the kids give the parent's live's purpose. What's the point then? Does the kid have no purpose until it has kids of it's own? Does the parent's life end in failure if their children die young or never procreate?
At the same time I can understand wanting to pass on what you've learned in life. Sort of a way of living forever. And it's always nice to feel loved by another person and little kids tend to love their parents in most cases.
So, what's everyone's reasons for/against having children?

With a ton of respect and a disclaimer that I have no idea of your particular family dynamic, IMO, women pay a MUCH more significant price than men do when it comes to not only birthing children, but rearing them. I think we've discussed this before, but most men spend around 30 minutes a day actively parenting. 30 minutes a day.
To answer Zeek: There are a myriad of reasons why I don't necessarily want children.
1) The changes to my body. I absolutely fear gaining a ton of weight and then never losing it.
2) I fear never having any of my own time or money to do with as I see fit.
3) I don't have a strong urge to see a mini-me.
4) I think there are plenty of children in this world and I don't feel the need to add to that
5) While the unconditional affection of a child is AMAZING (good god, who doesn't melt when a little one buries their head in your neck for some snuggles?), I think if I had a kid for that reason, it would be more selfish that not wanting one because I don't want to get fat.
A lot of people say it's selfish to not want kids. I disagree. I think it's no less selfish to want them as it is to not want them. A whole lot of the reason to have kids are pretty damn selfish, if you ask me.

Selfish to not want kids? I've never heard that one? What is it some kind of duty to procreate? I think it would be much worse to bring a child into the world that you don't care about.
I'm on the fence over the kid issue. I'm not opposed to them. I think I have parent potential. At the same time I don't have a driving need to raise a child. I don't care about new baby smell. Every kid learns to walk. What's that first step supposed to be so special for? I don't think I would get a whole lot of joy out of stuff like that. I certainly hope I wouldn't be one of the parents who tries to videotape their kid's whole life like there's ever going to be a time that they just want to sit around watching shakey home videos for days on end.

Oooh interesting ponder! I have thoughts... many drunken thoughts.
Okay, maybe it would be better to save those thoughts for another day as I have to get up in six hours (oh look at that, everyone went to bed and it's not my birthday anymore
)
Probably best that I don't have kids mainly because I'm an irresponsible drunken sop. Other reasons are redundant. Babies are cute though. Especially my twin nephews!
I'll be back all sobre and friendly and (hopefully) articulate tomorrow.

Answer: You're right, in most respects that is the case. I actually work from home, so I am more involved than most. Even when I wasn't, I spent most the evening helping either with dinner or with kids. But I am unusual in that respect.
To answer Zeek: There are a myriad of reasons why I don't necessarily want children.

ANSWER: All very valid reasons. Having a child is first the woman's choice, then her partners. I have always respected my wife's choice, which is why our first 3 kids are 4.5 years apart. The last baby was a surprise, but welcome. We are done, so I got fixed, which is safer and easier than a woman. Again, my wife gave me the suggestion, and it's also WAAAAY cheaper than continually buying birth control.

For me..I love kids. I have always loved kids. You've all heard my raptures over Annie, Wyatt, and Audrey... Every job I've ever had has been kid related ( nanny, daycare manager, teacher, etc) I think kids are such fun. Yes they are a ton of work, but their funny little laughs and ways, the silly things they like and do, and just all kinds of sweet joy... Plus there's something wonderful about loving someone so much that you want to have a child together... and yes I've heard and understand the parents that see their kids as the center of their universe and no that doesn't mean the kid has no identity just that the parents have shifted their focus... though in my opinion the center should be the relationship between the parents, but the kids should be the focus in terms of their needs.

*backs out of thread in terror*
I don't do kids. Small sticky people fill me with terror. They also smell fear, and make a bee-line for me. Not the nice folk who like them and want to talk nonsense and make faces, oh no. The scary lady who uses whole sentences to them, quite often with some force, is the one they like to follow about.
I have nothing against people who want to have kids, but I like my life. If I want something that makes a noise at anti-social hours, poops, pukes and eats messily - I have a cat. (She is, however, gorgeous. I can forgive cats a lot.)

Rofl, somehow I read this:

Quote:I was sitting there trying to figure out what had happened to MsB, that she was advocating saying ‘fuck’ to children – and then defining it! Lol!
and if you use the F word
But yes, I do agree that children should be talked to in full sentences, with as much vocabulary as possible, and not in a baby-talk voice. Baby-talk is for puppies, hehe.
Personally I’m in a really weird place when it comes to having kids. The first 15 years of my life were all about babies, with a new one coming along every two or three years, so I’ve had more than my fill of diapers and spit up and the terrible twos. And since I’d had so much experience with all my younger siblings, I babysat a lot until I was about 20, so it’s really only been the last 7 years or so that I haven’t been around babies and small children at least once a week.
I always assumed I would have kids, but hubby was upfront, probably during the first month we were dating, about not wanting kids. As we got more serious, I had to decide how much that would bother me. I decided then that I would rather spend my life with this man that I loved than walk away from that on the idea of a maybe-potential-theoretical love from a child.
Not long after, I got sick, and having kids has been completely out of the question anyway. I would have to go off all my medication, and at times I haven’t had the strength or energy to take care of myself or do something as small as grocery shopping, forget running around after a kid. So we didn’t even talk about it for a couple of years.
Last spring my first nephew was born, and last summer my best friend had her first baby. Both my friend and my sister-in-law are pregnant again now too, with babies due in February 09. And next month will be a year since I started on the new diet that’s allowed me to start working again, and to go almost completely off my pain meds. So it’s come up again.
Hubby still doesn’t really want a kid of our own, and I’m kind of beh on it, to be honest. I expected that meeting my nephew and honorary-niece would send me into waves of baby-lust, but they really didn’t. They’re cute kids, and they’ve grown really fast, but mostly I’m looking forward to meeting the people they grow up to be, rather than wanting a small person of my own.
So we’ve talked about being “the cool aunt and uncle” who always send you video games for your birthday, and the next house we buy having a couple of guest rooms, since we’re in such a great location, close to Disneyland and the beach and all, and having family come stay with us from time to time. But I like my career, I like it just being the two of us.
I told hubby years ago that I would need a puppy at some point, if we weren’t going to have kids, and now that I’m telecommuting full time again (rather than being gone 11+ hours a day, two or three times a week), he’s saying we can start looking for a good breeder. I bought a book on the kind of dog I want and read up on all the things you need to buy and do with a new puppy, and while they’re adorable and cuddly and I totally want one, even a puppy is too much of a commitment for me right now, lol. Maybe next spring, if I can get funding for this new project I’m trying to jump-start.
Also, the woman I’ve been working for the last 8 months – and will work with again, and who is now one of my best friends and mentors – had her first baby at 41, and boggles at the idea of getting married and having babies when you’re in your 20s, when you’re still trying to figure out who you are, in her words. So maybe there’s time for me to change my mind.. For now I’m going to go look at puppy videos:

Yay, people to talk to me! (Sorry, got pulled into a phone meeting.)
New car smell: my Mini is approaching 4 months old now, and just over 6000 miles (did I mention my commute used to suck?), and it’s just about lost that smell. I still get it sometimes when I set the AC to a direction it’s not usually set on. I don’t really miss the smell though, weirdly…
D3: Lol Zeek. I haven’t seen much of it yet. If they have a playable version at BlizzCon this year I’ll let you know what I think then. Lately I’ve been working too much (and reading comics again) to play much, but hubby and I were playing D2 with some friends again recently. I have an invite to the WoW expansion beta, but haven’t played that yet (and yes I know millions of fanboys just cried out in pain and then were silenced). Also been playing Guitar Hero on the Wii, which isn’t nearly as fun as it sounds.
Oh and MsB, you should have seen the email I sent when they changed their minds and decided to require me to fill out the rest of my two weeks, rather than having that be my last day. They tried to shove a month’s worth of work, easily, into the two weeks. I basically told them to GTFO, only with nice words, though I did have to edit it and tone it down a few times before I sent it, lol.

CK your nerd cred is fading. :-( I was soooooo excited when they finally announced it. I was waiting through their whole teaser thing. Reading all the rumors. Then when I woke up the day of the WWI thing I immediately went to their site and saw the three little pillars of fire come up and I was like omg omg then *boom* Diablo 3!!! YAY!
And yeah I've been playing D2 again some. I stopped after the D3 announcement because it just made it seem dumb to build characters that I know I'll completely forget about once D3 comes out. Then I saw a deal where you could buy cd keys for like $4. So, I got myself a second account and now I can rush my own characters :-) So, now I'm into D2 again. It's nice to be able to get like a lvl 70ish character in 3 days.

Of course no playable demo yet. It's Blizzard. They aren't even close to releasing Starcraft 2 and that was announced almost a year before the D3 announcement. There are just gameplay trailers and only 2 of the character classes have been named so far.
It looks like good old Diablo style fun though. Even if there are nerd petitions all over the place demanding changes.

Yikes...I only have a 4 mile round trip commute, ride the scooter most weekdays for it...and still have 5000 miles on my Yaris. I don't think you were doing as bad and you think. :D
Can I just say that I'm tired of house-sitting. The one lady is driving me bonkers with her suspicion that I'm not doing what she's paying me to do. She asks me to go out to her house today to let the dogs loose at lunch (which I didn't use to have to do, but since the Bambi incident...which BTW, I was at home for...she's demanded that they be locked up when I'm not there). This trip means I have to take a long lunch, and b/c of other committments, can't stay longer at work, so I'm out 1/2 hour of pay (I only take a 30 minutes lunch and it takes 20 minutes to get to her house...on a road that makes me car sick). I get there and there's a note taped to the dog's pen asking me to call her from there so she won't worry. Bullshit. It's because she thinks I wasn't going to go. She also asked me to call when I get there this evening. What's the purpose in that? I don't have to call every evening, so it's not like she's making sure I haven't gotten in an accident and the animals will be on there own, because that could happen any time I leave the house. If I called at lunch she already knows I've been there at least once. She wants to check in what time I arrive. Whatever. I'm just about done with her. I'm not some unreliable teen or college student. If the service I offer isn't good enough, find someone else. Oh, and quit changing how much you pay without talking to me about it first.
Oh, and the dogs have again been banished to sleeping outside...where they bark all night and I can't get any sleep. SHE doesn't think they bark...but funny, their bedroom is completely across the house from the dogs. I think I will take notes each time they bark and leave a note so she realizes that I'm getting no sleep.
Sorry about that. I'm incredibly annoyed...and car sick. Blurgh.

Blegh, sorry Rugbug, that sucks. Sounds like she needs a nanny-cam -- both so she can check up on you, and so you can prove to her that the dogs bark at night. ;)
And yay, Yuri the Yaris! I'd forgotten you got a car about the same time 'Bug. I hit 6000 miles on the day I quit, so two weeks ago today, right before the 3 month old mark. I guess it really is only about 3 months and 10 days old or so. But yeah, driving in only two days a week rather than 5 really saved on the mileage I think. :P I've put less than 200 miles on it in the last two weeks, so that helps too.

I only live 2 miles from work. And I have better weather. And no fire ants. :D
I really should bike to work. I'm stopped by that pesky 30 minute lunch (Rugbug enforced, not work enforced...I like to leave earlier). I can't get home, eat and get back in time on a bike. Packing my lunch is not an option. I can barely pick clothes to wear...how ever would I pick what I want to eat 5 hours in advance AND find time to pack it? I get up about 25 minutes before I have to leave. :D

I agree I would never house-sit for someone like that. It's not like there aren't people who are going to realize that something's not right. and the logic behind calling once just isn't there. Any of the other days could involve an accident so the animals couldn't be taken care of. There could be an accident at home where the refrigerator tips over on me or I get stuck in the washing machine have to sit there until I can cut through my arm with a butter knife to free myself. No one is taking care of the animals then, right?
There's a level of trust and a required need to just let go.

Holy crap! I am utterly shocked. This may have been the stupidest chain of events I've run into in a long long long time.
So, we have a project planner who sent out an email monday saying a document was due and it needed to have the link activated on a page right? No problem I grab the document out of an email and throw it out on the site done and done. Today she goes out and clicks the link. Looks at the document and sees that it contains a URL to itself. That URL doesn't match the link that she just clicked so she goes and changes the link. Link is now broken. She sends an email saying the link is broken and someone needs to fix it. I go look at it and see that it's been changed. Odd. Oh well fix it. Send her a note that it's fixed. She replies back to tell me it's not fixed because it doesn't match the URL in the document and that's why "SHE changed the link in the first place". AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! You saw it was working and then decided to break it and then complained it was broken when YOU broke it!?! Amazing!!! I've since renamed the document to match the URL in the document itself and changed the link yet again. Now she's happy.
OK I've vented. For now...

Ah Zeek: it's too bad that the people with the authority to say 'fix it' also are in a position that you can't say, 'you fix it, dumba$$, since you're the one that broke it.' It's a travesty, really. I think the world would be a much better place if we could confront ANYONE with their stupidity and not fear reprisal.
There must've been a pizza message sent electromagnetically or some such, because I had pizza last night, too.

It looks like we've moved on from the ponder, but I have yet to add my two cents.
My desire for kids stems from my desire for siblings. I am an only child and always dreamed of having siblings. When I became old enough to realize that it was never going to happen, I began dreaming of when I could have my own family, where I would have more than one child. As the time went on, the desire matured with me.
Besides, I love taking care of children. I spent 4 years working in a daycare, 3 summers as a nanny, and financed an entire trip to Europe off of babysitting money when I was in high school. Even as I type, I'm babysitting 4 kids at once.
There isn't anything I find more rewarding than watching a child finally understand something or seeing the wonder as they experience something for the first time. Sure, tantrums and whiny fits aren't very fun, but nothing in life is completely pleasant.
I'm a leaf on the wind

Rhyianan, you are a girl after my own heart... I wanted to have my own kids when I turned 6 because until then I'd had a new sibling each two years, when I asked Mum about a baby brother she said I'd have to have one of my own... I have always loved working with kids, the time and patience and icky smells and tough days are nothing compared to the smiles, hugs, unconditional love and development you get to experience with them! I have been a nanny for 10 years, and before that I did voluntary work with intellectually disadvantaged children, as well as babysitting, teaching Sunday School, running a youth group and generally enjoying my neices and nephews! I want to know I have made a difference in a child's life - and I do know I have, in many children's lives, but it would be really wonderful to not have to hand them back at the end of the day, or to leave them behind when you move to the other side of the world!
I miss my babies so much!

Ok, I stayed mum, but I gotta say I love having my kids, all 4 of them. Case in point:
my 3 year old, who is usually a holy terror, came into my bedroom(I work at home, and that's my "office"), wearing one of his pullups on his head, so that his face was framed by one of the leg holes. I couldn't help myself, even though I was on the phone with a customer, I just started laughing. His sense of humor is developing, and I get to see him do it. I would miss that if I didn't have my kids. I am the oldest of 7 kids, so you would think that having helped raise my sibs I would not be so happy about having kids, but they are the joy of my life, and I haven't lost myself in them, I just get to help make them productive members of society. but it's not for everyone, and I can respect those who chose not too.

Since we've been talking kids...
A kid in the neigborhood (13 year old boy) brought me a present the other day... It wasn't much, but it meant something to him.
(A little history - our house is the "hang out" house in the neigborhood. When I get home from work, there's almost always 2-8 kids there.)
Anyway, he'd gotten a guitar pick from a band he knew I liked, and he just had to give it to me. I told him I wanted him to have it, but it was important to him to give it to me, so I accepted it.
Just thought I'd share since you don't often hear about spontaneous acts of generousity from teenagers...

Personally I wouldn't say that I was a baby hater, I go very gooey on occassions and bore my friends to tears with stories about by adorable twin nephews, I just know that I absolutely do not have the patience to deal with one 24/7. I struggle keeping my temper in hour and a half long lessons to teenagers! I worry that I would end up strangling a child that I was forced to live with permanently and the law takes a dim view of these things.
Some people just have a lot more patience than others. I have seen mothers (and fathers) patiently play the 'peekaboo' game for up to 3 hours. I'm off after about the 3rd time!

They liked him and decided it was unfair that others didn't see past the special ed to the great kid... so they took it upon themselves to make this kid popular. Invided him to all the stuff and everything.. 4 years later he was sutdent bodt vice president!!
It was sooo cute FLT:)
