If you haven't read Better Days, this question reveals a mild spoiler, sorry.

But - question...

Kaylee talks about how her wish fulfilled life would involve her dad, but she's lying to some degree right - given the simon factor.
ok.
But in Serenity (pilot) she talks about parents plural.
So - inconsistent or what? Does she even have folks?
Or no mom? or a very distant dad that her daydream reveals as someone she still hopes to please one day?

No, Kaylee aint a robot. Aint no monstrous thing from the closet - just a little possible reveal. Maybe her folks are like Tara's but more likely it just tips us to Kaylee's perspective.

any views?

The approach that we took at Virtual Firefly at www.stillflying.net (which is pretty much also what I hold to personally) is that both of Kaylee's parents are alive, but that her dad is a mechanic like she is. So when she thinks of the future she considers the option to go into business with her dad (but not her mom, who is now a mechanic...).

I think overall the comic series has stayed consistent with what we know of the characters, from the series and the movie. We can assume that both of Kaylee’s folks are alive. She fantasizes her working relationship with her dad probably because he is a mechanic and she has had the opportunity to work with him and train under him. He was most likely the parent that recognized her talent first.

And, I'm relieved Kaylee's magic wand future wasn't solely about Simon, marriage and babies. I think that is a misconception that often times fanfic writers define her character by.

To me she's always been about her folks, sex, and engines or vice versa... and gods, I love her for it! And who knows? Maybe after Simon there would have been others. She enjoys male attention (Simon with the flowers) and there is nothing wrong or immoral about it, especially at her young age.

and Stillflying has hit so many correct notes for me, love you guys... shouldn't be missed

Well in Out of Gas she talks about "workin for her daddy" IIRC and then "Just gotta ask my folks. Don't leave without me!"

So, I'd say both her parents are alive and that in her fantasy she's back working with her father. I don't see any inconsistencies or anything that would indicate she has some sort of strange family issues.

i don't say 'strange family issues' - but the inconsistencies seem clear - ie deliberate.

'Fraid I'm with Platonist on this one. I think she worked with her father, so when she thinks of setting up a business, that's exactly what she means. I just think her mother didn't work in the shop.
