Since I've volunteered to run the library in our Browncoat Utopia, I've been thinking about what sort of things we'd need in the collection. So, once we have lots of cozy chairs and sunny rooms (and a decent inhouse coffee shop), what do you want to be able to read/watch/listen to/etc.? Aside, of course, from anything Joss related, or Joss show related, 'cause that's a given. If nothing else, feel free to use this thread to get a plug in for your favorite author or artist.

I want Terry Prachett's Discworld novels, Laurie King's mysteries, an endless supply of crossord puzzles, and Beethoven's violin concerto.

Well for reading materials I recommend the Patrick Robinson novels, some of Stephen Coonts and Tom Clancy's earlier novels, Robert Gant and Andy McNab too.

Oh and all the latest copies of Jane's (no not Jayne's :) ) books for reference when I’m working on 3D modeling projects and Sub Command (and Dangerous Waters too soon) missions.

There better be Parmesan Italian bagels at that coffee shop!

Anything by Iain (M.) Banks, some of his Sci-fi, especially 'Consider Phlebas', really picks up on the intimate, lived in feel that Joss was putting into Firefly while being epic on a staggering scale.
Also, everything by Robert Rankin. I like my regular dose of weird, and I like it to be big, neon coloured and spectacularly daft.

Not to threadjack or nothin' but Gunrunner is Dangerous Waters out yet? I fell way behind the loop on what is out and soon to be out or eventually will be out with all the moving around of late. That looked spiffy lemme tell ya.

Now back on track, basically we just need to have 2 sections of the library, stuff that's cool and stuff that's not cool. Seeing as how part of my mission statement is to borrow the whole Library of Congress that should give us plenty of each category. So if ya can think of it, it should be there.

Now as to what's cool and what's uncool...that we're just gonna have to armwrestle over.

I've never heard of a library divided into cool and not cool. I kinda suspect we could tear the country apart figthing over that one. But do we really want the whole Library of Congress? That's a lot of books! Maybe we should just ste--obtain things people actually want to read. Or watch. Or eat (and yes, we'll have all kinds of bagels). Which could be determined by requests. Thus the thread.

Might as well consider having a multi-purpose library, 'cause everyone has their favorite style of book to read, plus we would need all manner of reference works. For those who don't read that much there needs to be dvds and videos to rent out, and of course computers so we can check all the latest news from the Cortex.

As for the books I would like to see, classic SF has to be there, and everyone's gonna have a different idea of what that means. But for me, here's a few that have a definite Firefly feel to them.

Almost anything by Robert Heinlein
Asimov's Foundation, Robot adn Lucky Starr novels
Poul Anderson's Technic League series
John Barnes' Mother of Storms (could be considered a prelude to the end of life on Earth That Was)
Ben Bova's Privateers (Dan Randolph as a proto-type character for Mal Reynolds)
LM Bujold's Vorkosigan Sagas
Orson Scott Card's Ender Series
C.J.Cherryh's Pell series
Joe Haldeman's Worlds trilogy
Edgar Pangborn's Davy series (this could be the story of the final days of those left on Earth That Was)
Mike Resnick's Santiago series
A.E.van Vogt's Slan

These are just a few, I'm sure I'll think of others later.

Good list!

I would add David Brin's Uplift series and just about everything else he's written. He (like JW) knows how to make alien/foreign styles of life become real and mostly likable in spite of faults. Great storyteller, too! Definitely outside the box/circle/hexagon.

Not yet but very soon. SA has said it will be out around the second quarter this year. At the E3 convention they are showing it off I think. At the DW Fourm at subsim.com there have been a number of links posted to interveiws by varyous game sites in recent days.

I can't wait to get my mission writting hands on the Kilo SSK and P-3 Orion!
