It was such a great introduction to her character, and the speech to convince her(which I heard was a last minute rewrite) was a wonderfully delivered line("Wanna?")

I actually was forced to show that episode to my dad as his first one, so he got quite confused by the introduction of her :) He thought it was wonderful though, loved the dry humor and such.

I like how it shows that Kaylee keeps her innocence with out actually being innocent. i was shocked a bit at first...but i got over it in like .5 seconds

I'm still trying to decide whether to listen to the Out of Gas Dvd commentary or not. I love the episode so much and it's the one episode that if I'm gonna watch it I will always sit down and watch it properly all in one go as it's so perfect as a whole. So I'm not sure whether I'd like to see it broken down or analysed or talked over at all. I don't want to watch the episode again and be thinking 'oh this is where he said this and such and such a happened behind the scenes'.

Does anyone know what the commentary is like? Should I watch it or not?

I haven't heard the commentary, but did consider not joining this community for similar reasons.

My take on it is this. No-one can take away or invalidate your experience of Out of Gas. What happened in your head is what made it art; a commentary cannot be definitive, because it doesn't include your experience.

So if the commentary doesn't aid your further experience of Out of Gas, just forget it - which you should probably do with most of what you read here

Even though in general I am not a fan of commentaries, I eventually listened to all of the ones on the Firefly DVDs. I can't decide for you whether you should listen to them or not, but in the case of "Out of Gas" I don't think you would be missing out on a lot if you never heard it. In fact the only commentary I would not want to be without is Joss' on "Objects in Space."

personally i am a fan of commentaries but that's because i wanted to know what sort of process they used to write/stage the different things. i pretend i'm a writer occasionallyand i am a recent convert to Joss's style so i need all the help i can get.

what the commentary does (for me anyway) is enhance the experience, not diminish it. Out of Gas, while it is genius, will never lose it's glimmer if you love it that much. Tim Minear doesn't do a lot of "oh and Jeff the grip droped his sandwich in the fram here and we had to digitally remove it" kind of commentary, it's very story oriented comments. i think you're safe

I have to admit that they got me good when Mal says, "...we finally got ourselves a genius mechanic.", and Bester walks across the screen.

As far as the commentary, it's mostly Joss talking about the lighting and camera angles and so forth. It's interesting and it certainly doesn't take anything away from the episode but you really haven't missed anything by not watching it.

I thought Kaylee's introduction was perfect; it was a great reminder that, although she seems like a lovely, wonderful person, she does chase the fellas. She likes 'em, and she'll grapple with one she likes if she has an oppurtunity to do so.

Have to disagree on the commentary thing, though. I thought Joss' commentaries were fascinating, with the lighting, and the camera, and the shiny bits of metal; after hearing all that, you realise just how much cool stuff they were doing to make this a very cool show.

I'm a huge fan of Kaylee's and I thought this was an excellent way for her to have been brought onto Serenity. Plus, I just didn't like Bester, and was happy that he left, and that it didn't take any longer than it had to.

I'm sure a few people were like "How could she". I always looked at it like Hey, Bester ain't ugly, and this was her first opportunity to see a Firefly up close. Plus, engines get her hot.

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."
