Hey, all. For those of you who weren't aware, don't go running out to get a Blu-Ray player without doing a little research. Beginning this summer, the new format of Blu-Ray 2.0 will be coming out. The major difference will be some interactivity features as well as internet connectivity effects. As of now, the only currently-available players that will be compatible will be those that can be upgraded through internet connections (generally ethernet or wireless). And the only one I know of like that is the PlayStation 3.
So beware. But enjoy your new discs in all their glory when you finally get one (and don't forget to give your old DVD set to a potential new Browncoat!).

Ok you up to date techies, my question (from someone living in the cretaceous) is, I suppose there is no such thing as a player that will play the maroon/red cased HD DVD's 'and' the Blue Ray DVD's is there?

au contraire
The LG BH100 plays both (LG is the company name). But it is still only BluRay 1.0, and I don't know if the HD DVD side even permits use of all the interactivity that HD DVD offered. But even if it did, you're still better off buying a separate dedicated HD DVD player (you can get them now for as low as $100 - some places are selling them off as up-convert DVD players). Shop around, and there will be tons of them showing up on eBay, as people unload them. For a short time, you can get HD DVD discs cheaply, too. But in the long run, they'll be obsolete. And if your player fails, you'll only be able to buy a used one. It's like laserdiscs all over again - hasn't been a laserdisc player made in years.

The PS3 is compliant with that. It's also one of the cheapest options for Blu-Ray. Now if Joss would just make me a Serenity video game...

The recent news about Firefly being released on Blu-Ray disk is good news for Browncoats, for sure. However, from the standpoint that Blu-Ray is essentially the Blue Sun corporation, not so much. Has anyone seen how much this is anticipated to cost us? Coupling that with the fact that the cheapest upgradeable BR player right now is the PS3 at $399, and you are talking some smack. And region coding will remain a player, as was noted by a non-US browncoat in the previous post.
Had only HD DVD won, with its region-free format! I have enjoyed Serenity on HD DVD - an AWESOME transfer - and would have loved to get Firefly on HD DVD as well. I haven't bought a BR player yet, and won't until they seriously drop in price. Until then, I'll remain content with my HD DVD player and the available titles, of which there are many.
If any of you are interested, there is a Yahoo! group built for HD DVD enthusiasts, at the following link:

Besides just talking HD DVD, there are some useful things there - opportunities for trading titles, finding out about deals and discounts. Just today I found out about and purchased the Star Trek Season 1 HD DVD set from Amazon.ca for $50.97 delivered! If info like this sounds good to you, go and join! I think you'll especially like the front page picture today!

Hi, good to see you dropping by, as am I.

I know... American is awful about this, but I'm hoping they'll release it all over eventually.
I won't have a Blu-Ray player for some time, simply cannot afford it, but I'll buy the DVD just to support the cause. It'll sit on my shelf waiting for my player.
There is going to be a reunion thingy on it with most of the cast...that alone makes it worth it for me.

Good to see you're still around, too. :)

Browncoats always do. That's what makes us special. :)
Me, I just bought a 50" 1080P LCD TV and matching Bluray player, just so I could see our BDHs in high-definition. Yes, I ain't quite right. :) So, now I'll go buy an additional PlayStation 3 and a Bluray writer, just so I can use something like AnyDVD HD to rip *my own* Bluray disc to hard disk, and reburn it region-free. You really can't stop the signal!
Now only hoping Amazon delivers soon.
