On coming Facility Manager wants change and professionalism.

Meaning: Dress code enforced, painting and changing of offices, I need a new desk which costs me my office in the back for the one up front with the client files and the loss of my comfy little cave away from the clients and the ability to "supervise" the tech.s. Sucks. But at the same time I'm gonna throw out a ton of stuff I'm tired of looking at.

Too conflicted and need caffeine.

This is sorta his standard. I don't know where it came from and it doesn't tend to work well for him. I think you make much better friends by being genuine then you do by trying to tell them what you think they want to hear. For instance he was talking about how when he went to Spain with his wife he was telling everyone there that he was Canadian so they wouldn't think badly of him. Such a tool.

So I just saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall last night. Very hilarious IMO. It wasn't really what I expected, but it was good. There are some very outrageous scenes though. Actually a lot of the laughter comes from outrageous stuff just blind siding you. Still I recommend it to anyone over 18.

Anybody else seen it yet? What did you think?

I think all the Aptow movies are best the first time. Waiting a year or more before seeing it again can make the gags fresh, but seeing it again right away does seem to take something out of the experience.

Though, I did talk to a guy yesterday who played one of the reporters in one of the red carpet scenes (all the reporters were played by real reporters, apparently), and he said he saw it several months ago when they had just finished the final cut, and then again this weekend, and loved it both times. He's probably biased, but there you go.

Ok, so here's my question, mostly because I don't really feel like working (today is a telecommuting day, yay!). So I've been consulting with a new company since January, 40+ hours a week. I've become the defacto Lead of my department and in some aspects the lead of the product itself. The company is starting to talk about expanding my department, which would mean hiring a real Lead, but they like things they way they are and so they've offered me the job a couple of times now.

There are a lot of crappy things about this job. There are a couple of people I would never work with again, and some serious issues with the team dynamic created by those people. It's a 75 mile commute each way. Right now I'm driving up 2-3 times a week, but if I was Lead I would need to go up 4-5 times per week. (I'm thinking about buying a new car soon, regardless of what I choose here, because that commute in LA with a stickshift is getting ridiculous.) There's a fair possibility that this thing will crash and burn and go nowhere, but I'm actually ok with that kind of uncertainty.

There are also a lot of good things about this job. For the most part, I *love* the people I work with. First time ever that I can really count most of the people I work with as friends. My boss is one of the first female role models I've ever had in this industry, and she and I work really really well together. I like the product we're working on, and each day that goes by the product has more "me" in it. If it takes off, it'll be huge, and if I take the job my name will be listed front and center on it. I would negotiate for a larger salary than I'm making as an independent contractor, and get stock options. The title would probably give me more leverage to shut up the few people who are really bugging me (but not enough to eliminate the problem completely). Taking the job would also be really good for my career in the long run.

But I kinda like being an independent contractor, and knowing that I can say "screw this" and leave whenever I want. And I'm worried a bit about my continued health, being able to continue to do the work through the stress and long hours. The drive worries me. I've also been pretty close to quitting a couple of times, because of the aforementioned shittiness.

So what do you guys think? Should I bite the bullet for the chance of fame and fortune -- well, for my name as Lead on the thing I've been leading anyway, and a slightly larger salary -- despite the shittiness and the drive? Or should I stick to my "hired gun" ways?

Well I know my answer. I'd go for the fame, fortune and stability. It sounds like we're different in the stability department though. I'm perfectly happy doing the same job for a long time and getting set in my ways. I'm a go with the flow type of guy and I don't usually like the flow changing drastically. So, take my advice with a grain of salt.

Also it's strange to me that if you because the lead of a department that you wouldn't be able to totally eliminate the shitty people. I mean where I work a manager who doesn't like you could pretty easily spell your doom. Bad reviews and such tend to do the trick. So, I'd think you could either eliminate the shitty people or force them to get in line if you were their manager.

Now that I'm thinking about it how come you still couldn't jump ship at any time? If your product rocks and you get lots of the credit then you should have a pretty awesome resume. That should give you the ability to jump from job to job if you really want.

I dunno Zeek, you ready to move out to the west coast and lead the super secret life of an international girl of mystery? Could be a bit of a change.

Unfortunately the people who bug me aren’t in my department. They’re leads or VPs of other departments that I have to work with closely, but no one I could actually demote. Yell at, sure. But even with the official title there’s only so much I could do.

One guy is basically completely unqualified for his job, and spends a lot of time trying to make it look like he’s worth the space he’s taking up, while simultaneously making mistakes left and right that hurt the rest of us and the product. Another guy just started who either a) doesn’t think my job is a real job; b) doesn’t like women in my job title; or c) doesn’t like people as young as me running the show. He’s abrasive and rude to pretty much everyone in development, and constantly has to be reined in. Thankfully he reports to the woman I report to, and I think I’ve just about convinced her that his department should be subservient to my department, lol.

As far as taking the job, I could totally jump ship at any time, but after years of being a contractor, it would feel weird to me to leave on bad terms from a full time position. OTOH, I’m so tied to this product now – they’re more or less screwed without me – and I like the people I work with so much that I would feel bad leaving now anyway.

I’m also worried about the drive. 153.7 miles round trip. A new car would help, but do I really want to be doing that 4-5 times a week?

Hmmm international girl of mystery you say. I don't know about that word. I'm not much of an international person. I've only left the states for brief jaunts to Mexico. By brief I mean a few hours and then back to the comfort of clean water. Though for fame and fortune I'd put up with a lot.

Ah I didn't know the shitty people were higher ups. Isn't that just the worst? It's the same way where I work. I love the people I work with. They're all hard working, dedicated, cool people. I wouldn't say they're friends outside of work since I'm pretty much the youngest one around, but still I enjoy working with them. It's the management I can't stand. They just made another insane move today. I mean really who demotes a team lead into just another employee on the team they used to manage? So far it sounds like they aren't even going to have a team lead for that group anymore. How's that going to work? Do you think she was just twittling her thumbs all day and not doing anything? &^$#%# idiots!

Anyway I guess I can see the cons you're talking about a bit better now. The commute does sound like a bit of a pain though I enjoy driving. I'd be getting an mp3 player setup with the extra money I'd be making and I'd just rock out the whole drive to work and back.

Is your commute mostly highway (errr there it's freeways huh?) driving that moves along at a nice clip or is it bumper to bumper make you want to die inside driving?

I had one summer job that had me commuting from the suburbs into chicago and the areas that were always bumper to bumper just ate away at my sanity. If it was any longer than a summer job I think I would have snapped.

Still I think I'd take the job. It sounds like there are some really cool advantages and it's my opinion that every job has its pros and cons. They're just different. (I say this as I'm seriously thinking about finding a new job)

Yeah, it’s higher ups I don’t directly report to, and people technically at the same level as me (though he may not realize it, since I don’t officially have the Lead title, despite being introduced that way constantly).

The drive is all highway (405N to the 101N on the way up, for anyone who knows LA). I’ve managed to arrange my drive times so that I’m dealing with minimal bumper to bumper, but it’s still hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half each way. Two hours if I get stuck in bad traffic. My iphone has been a lifesaver, with the mp3s and the phone (woot), and the car I’m looking at buying has a nifty bluetooth set up that would feed both the music and the phone calls through the stereo speakers, which would rock. No stickshift would rock too. Of course, being a Lead might mean getting in before 10:30 or 11, so there may be more traffic may be in my future.

Can’t blame you for looking for a new job… The “international” part was a bit of an exaggeration (no stamps in my passport as yet!), so if you ever want to change industries, just let me know.

HUGS CK well right now I commute an hour each way ( so 2 hour total) and spend huge chunks of my day driving to different schools to trouble shoot. I have to say get books on cd. Suddenly I have all this reading time ( well ok listening time) but it's really great. As for the other aspects. Can you see yourself as a contractor forever? What about pension, retirement, benefits??? Long term health care? What about the stress? Would the stress play on your health?
Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years??
OK I know those are more questions but they are ones you really should answer before you choose:) HUGS and I know you'll be great no matter what

Hi MsB! *Hugs* I didn’t realize you were driving an hour each way for the new job! That sucks. I’ve gotten into podcasts with my drive and will be going to books on CD soon I think. :P

I can totally see myself has a contractor forever, which is why thinking about taking this job is really odd to me. My hubby has a regular full time job that he loves and will probably stay at for at least the next 10 years, and he would prefer to work within an established company anyway. So I get my health coverage through his job, and compensate for my higher taxes by withholding more from his paycheck. No one in my industry gets a pension at all, ever, so no worries there. I’m going to try to get a Roth IRA set up for myself this year, which our tax guy says will offset hubby’s 401k nicely, once we retire.

My health is actually the reason I started contracting in the first place. It gives me the flexibility to work from home, set my own hours, and say no to new projects much easier, so I’m able to tailor it to my current health condition. Taking a regular full time job seems like a huge commitment to me. What if I get sick again three months from now and have to quit? (Luckily my boss knows about all my health issues and *still* wants me to take the Lead position.)

In 5 or 10 years… I want to be a highly paid consultant, lol. I actually know exactly what sort of things I want to be working on, and I got involved with this company because it’s moving me in that direction. But I do want to have a couple of “titles” to my name, which does mean working with a team for a year here and there to actually ship a product, rather than going in for day meetings to give my opinion. This would be the first of those titles, and it would set me up nicely going forward. I just have to decide if I can commit to this, take on the extra mileage and hours and responsibility.

What kind of car are you looking at? Something sporty, stylish, comfy, other? I went with a mazda6 for my first new car. The funniest part was how many other people at my company in my age range all went for the same car. I know of at least 3 other guys who got one and I've seen others in the parking lot. It's so the sporty yet practical car for 20 something guys.

Okay. I looked at cars and I can't say there is one I would put money into. After a certain point they all look the same and do the same thing. I'd be stuck building my own to be truly happy driving. I like the Mazda's and the Saturn Ion. I might drive a Focus but love the Liberty MSB drives.

Yeah, I ruled out Mazdas (and most other cars) pretty early on. My 10 year old Civic is getting 35 mpg pretty consistently (and hasn’t dropped below 33 since I started this commute), and with how much I’m driving, I couldn’t bring myself to “upgrade” to something with low miles per gallon. I was looking into a hybrid when I ran across the mpg ratings for the Mini, and that was it, really, heh.

But I think it fits “sporty, stylish, comfy” pretty well. I’m going to get the automatic, because manual transmission in LA traffic is taking years off my life, I think. :P New automatic Minis come with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, though, so I know I’ll still be able to have lots of fun with it when I want, and not worry about it the rest of the time. I’m going to go check out one tomorrow that I might get (the other option is to order one, but that takes 6-8 weeks usually).

Yeah the mpg sorta sucks on the mazda6 but my commute is like a mile. I think I've had my car for 3 years now and I'm just pushing 15,000 miles. So, it doesn't break the bank for me.

Though with gas prices the way they are I'm sure mpg will be a huge consideration in my next car purchase.

And NVG I picked the mazda6 before I knew anyone else with one. I only found out a buddy already had one after I had done some research on it. He gave positive feedback and then once I got it that's when the next 2 guys jumped on board. It is a fun car though.

Yeah, regular is pushing $4 out here (finding anything under $3.95 is awesome), and I'm sure it'll just go up more over the summer. The standard Mini is rated at 26/34, but there are people on the Mini boards that say they routinely get over 40 mpg on the highway. Hopefully it won't be too much of a downgrade, anyway. :P

My Liberty get's about 28 on the highway so that's not bad for an SUV, but yes the commute is a pain. I am really enjoying getting a lot of " reading" done though:)

Did I post on here that I got a new car? The gas on the Wrangler was killing me and after deciding on a 2007 Toyota Yaris back mid year last year..I found out there weren't even available. Then I almost bought a 2008 a few times, but kept holding off. I was sad, b/c I was buying for mpg and the 2007 gets better mpg than the 2008. Three weeks ago, I found the perfect (almost) 2007 at the Toyota used lot. It was the right color, only had 8000 miles on it and the right price. Only not-so-perfect thing about it? It's an automatic and I wanted stick. Even with that detail... I LOVE it. It's adorable, zippy and gets FANTASTIC gas mileage. I'm getting 33 in the city. It also has an mp3 jack. It also feels like a big car inside.

(Yes, I'm parked in front of a fire hydrant. It was literally for 3 minutes and it was in the back parking lot of my work.)

I'm not really sure. :D The Jeep doesn't have a name...but for some reason, the Yaris needed one. Just like my iPod needed a name (Bert). Yuri the Yaris just sounds right. The rightness was confirmed when someone's hubbie went 'she should name it Yuri.'

It was a 'perfect storm' in finding Yuri. Seriously. I haven't seen a used one yet. And then it was an 2007, red (with tinted windows) etc. I wasn't even car shopping that day. I was going to Home Depot and drove by the Used Toyota lot..and there he was. He's got a killer certified pre-owned warranty (7-years, 100,000 miles, plus 3 years roadside assistance, etc) and the payment is about $90 when I figure in gas savings. I like the car enough that I may sell the Jeep. :(

Good morning peoples. Moving my office (at a slightly stiff pace) and trying to plan for hell week. Wait. It's more like a couple of weeks. Oh well. Went to a large shoot this weekend (50+ shooter) and I feel to have been rode hard and put away wet. Also went and shot with my brother and some local guys Saturday so I've pretty much ran all weekend.

PONDER:I was told that I was singled out yesterday on the field. Honestly I am still reeling at the fact that I am both feared by the opposition and respected enough that I can direct a team of twenty five guys (some I don't even really know) and have no complaints. It just feels strange to have some things about myself confirmed in ways I never thought of before. But still I am reluctant to fully accept that role amongst my peers. Is that odd or is it a more natural feeling than I am aware?

I've named all the cars I've owned or at least had my name attached to. The first silver Saturn was Euler, then the white Nissan Sentra after that was Fermat. My more recent silver saturn was Pythagoras, and my current car (black Jeep Wrangler) is Euclid. Notice any patterns?

Congrats on the new car ‘Bug! I ended up getting my car this weekend (wooohooo!) and had a very similar experience. I went up to the dealership to take a look at a blue Mini with a white roof that was at the high end of my price range. Instead I found this one:

Silver was my second choice, and I love the black roof and bonnet stripes. It had everything I wanted plus a sunroof and a couple of other small upgrades, and was just barely above what I would pay if I ordered one exactly the way I wanted it. And they said it was just off the truck, and hadn’t been listed on their webpage yet – it still had the plastic on the seats! When it was delivered to me after detailing, it only had 5 miles on it. It’s my first new car, so I’m still a little blown away.

The dealer knocked $250 off the price to make my trade in more palatable, and threw in some nice floor mats. Drove off the lot with everything I wanted and about $2k less than I thought I was going to pay when I went up there to check out the blue one. Been driving it all weekend and smiling like a gorramn fool. The bluetooth/iphone hookup will make me a happy girl for a loooong time too. Hubby has been driving it off and on all weekend too, and now he’s starting to think about putting one together for himself. He’s looking at “British Racing Green” though.

I’ve never named a car either, but I feel like I should name this one. She feels like a girl to me, but so far no names that I’m totally in love with. My dad suggested Kaylee, but my main character in World of Warcraft is Kaylee, so my guild calls me that, so that would feel weird, I think. My favorite so far is Avril, since I bought her in April and the saleswoman had the cutest little French name (also my last name is French, and hubby and I both have French heritage).

I’ll take a picture of her when I get a chance (the above is from Mini’s webpage).

As for the job, I’m still thinking about it. I want to see how the commute feels in the new car (I’m actually looking forward to the long drive tomorrow!), but I’m leaning towards taking it more and more. I’ll give it this week and see how I feel. :P

Ah...she's very cute. I like the mini's a lot.

It's funny how a car kind of "feels" like a specific gender. I fluctuated for a bit between male/female with Yuri. I joked that he was a hermaphrodite or experiencing gender confusion. :D Oddly, I had settle on Ruby Mae...but it just didn't feel right. Yuri feels right. (I also thought about Gilbert because he was 'born' in Gilbert, AZ...which explains the front window tinting...illegal in CA...but with my iPod named Bert...it just wasn't going to happen).

NVG, missed your ponder from above. I'm not sure if I'm interpreting it right but it sounds like you're just being modest. I don't know if it's totally normal, but I usually feel the same way when I get a lot of praise. I don't really want to accept it. I don't like being put on a pedestal.

Funny story but not the same situation at all. One computer science course in college I got an absolute 100% on a test. These tests are designed so when you get a 58% you don't even bat an eye as you wait to see what the curve is cause usually that's like a solid B. So, I was shocked when I saw my score.

Anyway funny part is the next lecture when the professor starts writing my name on the overhead and asks if I'm there. I was like "oh no". My friends obviously know I'm there so hiding at this point won't work. I raise my hand and he congratulates me on the perfect score. As I feel the hatred of everyone around me for ruining the curve on that test. Not the best day ever. At least I didn't get too much crap from my friends.

It's so weird how different an apartment can sound when the power is out. The power went out at like 11:45 last night and I was going to sleep anyway. So, I pretty much just messed with my cell phone alarm clock and lied down to go to sleep. It was sooooooo quiet though. I couldn't even figure out why it was so different until the power kicked back on around 1:15 and that woke me up. It was just background noise of like the A/C running and stuff that was missing. It's strange how used to that stuff I am.

So, I'm all excited to play Mario Kart Wii. I pre-ordered it over a month ago online. I figured this meant they would ship it to me and I'd get it on the launch day. Silly me. Apparently it means they ship it out the day after launch day. Bah!

Anyway this results in me refreshing the tracking info hoping by some miracle it will move faster the more times I refresh. So, I'm starring at the page and I notice that the package is listed at 17.80lbs. That seems really really heavy for a DVD and a little plastic steering wheel. I asked what everyone else's packages weigh on a different forum and one guy was like "uh...mine's only 1.7lbs". So, either they messed up the decimal place or I'm getting like 10 copies of Mario Kart lol. We'll see what I get on May 1st (estimated).

I already checked my credit card btw and no over charges or anything. So, that's good.

On another note just ran home for lunch and stopped off to grab the mail that I've neglected to pick up for like a week. *Zeek lazy* I got an unexpected surprise there too. I got a letter from Mazda congratulating me on paying off my car along with the title to the thing. I really thought I was on a 4 year plan. Apparently it was only 3. *Zeek bad at remembering details* 1 less auto payment from my bank account! Yay!
