I think you and I are on the same wavelength as far as offspring: unexpected last-minute pregnancy, and 'jedi' twins (just reverse the genders in the Tam family [including Kaylee] and you get a really creepy Skywalker/Solo corollary).

I have just the monk for you, below. He'd be ancient by that point, though.

I don't know about a whole series, but I got a movie idea.

Mal and crew have long settled on a moon near Persephone. Some backwater place. Jayne's still around, he's the local sheriff. Mal lives alone (Inara left him years ago) his estranged son has a ranch nearby. Mal's grandson idolizes Mal (which dad doesn't like) and is pining for a life of adventure. The kid finds Mal's old gun and runs away from home. Mal's son angrily blames Mal. After a big argument they head out after the boy. Jayne gets wind of things and shows up just as they start off. Along the way, they reunite with Zoe, Inara, and River (River has a boat). Maybe a caemo for a happily married Dr. & Mrs. Tam.

How's this for a premise....
It's twenty years after the original series. As a result of the revelation from Miranda, the Alliance faced increasing opposition from within, eventually resulting in a second civil war, only this time the Alliance doesn't hold itself together and falls apart into various competing factions, warlordism and independent planets. By this time the original crew has settled down on some faraway world. Mal and Inara have a son, and are still together in some way...or maybe not, that would have to be worked out. Simon and Kaylee have started a family and have a bunch of kids. River has disappeared for some mysterious reason. Wash made Zoe pregnant before he died and has a daughter who is as much of a badass as she is. Jayne has gone off on his own somewhere, still a mercenary. When the second war begins, Mals son, Zoe's daughter, and one or two of Simon and Kayle's kids go off to fight, and like the older generation come off on the losing side. Now they are trying to get by as best as they can, maybe on a ship of their own, or maybe as resistence fighters or mercenaries or a band of thieves or adventurers, something along those lines. They find out that River is alive, and she is involved in something amazing. A ship has arrived from Earth-that was, and she is on it....
So, whatta ya think?

You could pitch a new idea to Fox where they combine a reality tv prog say.. big brother but have it set on a Firefly class transport ship! You know how they love that reality crud.

It probably wouldn't work at Fox...let's be honest, of all the networks they are probably the suckiest. Firefly isn't the only incredible show they've panicked over and pulled the plug on. I'd say the SciFi Channel, might be a better bet, except they're also as trigger happy and shortsighted at times....a cable network would be a better fit though.

BTW, any ideas on who should star in a revived series like this? I was thinking relative unknowns, give them a chance to grow into the roles. I'm thinking maybe Nicki Clyne, who was just killed on Battlestar Galactica, she might be a good fit...

In view of the way they canned The Dresden Files and started over producing and promoting that phony piece of dung Ghost Hunters I'd say SciFi is at least on par with Fox.

If we were asking this 20 years down the line ....a slim maybe. Now? Keep the cast we have and hope for the best.

Twenty years from now might be a possibility....but who wants to wait that long? Besides, as previously stated, the old cast has moved onto other things. No, a fresh start, that's what needed, a chance to do it right, on a network that is willing to give the show a chance to grow. Now that I think about it, something like this might do well on HBO or Showtime, both of which have shown a willingness to take risks on excellent works.

I'm all for a new show set in the verse, but I really don't think it should try to be Firefly the next generation. It should just be a whole new story rather than trying to somehow link back to Serenity.

How about an up and coming member of the alliance and we follow his story as he learns the truth behind the lies he's been fed throughout his career to this point. How he deals with them and how it changes who he is.

Oh heck let's just give Saffron her own show. I'd watch that.
