I know someone from Cantr that is now going over to Afghanistan soon. I just learned of this today. So lets not forget all the others still over and the others that are about to go over there.

I told him about Static and how they still have internet connection so he will be able to continue to play Cantr.

On the topic of war: Today and tomorrow are very important days over here in the Netherlands.

Tonight we have Rememberance Night. We keep two minutes of silence to honour and remember those who have fallen in war, both those under arms and the civilian victims of war. Most noticeably those that died during the second world war, because that's still a rather fresh memory to our nation.

The Netherlands were occupied by the Nazis in 1940, and Canadian troops chased them out again in 1945. Lots of nasty things happened during the occupation years. And sadly to say, not all the Nazis came from Germany. Plenty of Dutch choose to live Hitler's dream. It devastated the Dutch Jewish population. Young girl called Anne Frank (from the diary) became our symbol of WWII.

Tomorrow we celebrate Liberation Day, and each year there's a very conscious effort to give the younger generation an appreciation of the true meaning of freedom, like being able to wear a t-shirt and jeans, to speak your opinion freely without fear of being chastened for it (although a healthy debate might ensue anytime of course), to be able to live where you want, be what you want, read what you want, etc.

The eve before Liberation Day, we remember the cost of Liberation Day. The cost of freedom. Of the countless of lives that were spilt because some people's rethoric turned into war mongering to hide their country's economic and political incompetence. Their beliefs that some people, because of religion or culture or skincolour or whatever, were inferior. To scapegoat people who are different, and therefore excellent targets for contolled anger. Anything to keep the people's mind off their hungry bellies and off the faults of the regime itself. People too busy fighting the enemy won't turn on you.

Tonight I salute the people that have fought, are still fighting, or will have to fight this sort of madness.

I wish it wasn't necessary that people would have to go out there, fight, and die, but if wishes were horses, there would be an end to world hunger for sure.

Although neither I nor any of my family have lost anybody in the second world war, Rememberance Night always gets to me. I got a pretty good imagination, and no matter how horrible I can imagine living during a war must be like, I know the reality is much, much worse.

I've known several political refugees, war refugees, and everyone of them has the same look in their eyes, even after having lived here for several years. They look haunted. And guarded. As if they're afraid that this dream of freedom that they/we are living, might come to a sudden stop. Because for them, it has stopped once. And what happened once, can happen again.

That's why we have Rememberance Night. And Liberation Day. You can't have one without the other.

Sorry about the long post, I wanted to put in my sentiments about war and freedom and the cost of it.

Static, welcome home. Hope the efforts of you and yours will pay off. And one day, I hope, all soldiers will be out of work, all armies disbanded, and everyone free. Utopia, I know. But I can dream, can't I?
