Well... I'd have to say, when Zoe holds up the shotgun to the guys head in the BDM, and tells him the definition of a hero. To have fallen that far in your opinion of humanity (Especially since it is mostly MY opinion)is downright heart wrenching.

Haven't watched the BDM in a while, but I seem to remember a shot near the end, of Inara in her empty shuttle, crying, I think.
and the end of The Message. almost a classic tragedy on the TV screen.

Just a quibble...It ain't a 'shotgun' Zoe's totin' in that scene...It's a rifle...A shotgun's generally a smoothbore weapon that shoots 'shot' , multiple small pellets that scatter in a 'pattern' , whereas a rifle has a 'rifled' barrel , twisting grooves to impart spin to an outgoing bullet...
That's why a shotgun is called a 'scattergun' ,
in the slang fashion...
But if you wanted to call Zoe's weapon a 'levergun' , that would be an acceptable slang expression , 'cause it's a lever-action rifle...

the saddest part was when washed died. I mean why did they have to kills wash? in the last episode Zoe and wash where talkin about having a baby. and in the movie he died? That is not right.......
When season 2 starts (SOON I HOPE) I think zoe should be Pregnant.

I consider these to be the saddest (paraphrasing a lot):
First of all, I think Joss goofed up and should have left the episodes in the oritginal order, with the message last, and the final scene in the Message should have been the conclusion of the original season.
Then, River in BDM: her monologue before "My Turn"
River in Ariel "I don't want to go to sleep"
River in Pilot "I didn't think you'd come for me"
Kaylee's surgery in Pilot, wityh Jayne crouching outside sickbay.
Out of Gas: Jayne's farewell to Mal.
War Stories: Wash explaining to Zoe "He's crazy"

I'd have to add these to the list. Sorry if they were already mentioned.
1. Kaylee's look after Mal orders them to leave Simon and River behind in Safe.
2. Book and Inara in her shuttle at the end of the Pilot when he questions why he is on this ship.
3. Simon climbing on the pole with River and telling them to light it in Safe.
4. Mal and Inara exchanging worried looks as Simon operates on Kaylee.
5. River saying they should put a bullet to her brain in the BDM.
6. Saddest of all: Tracey's funeral scene, just because of the music and the looks from all the actors.

Saddest scene for me was in War Stories. Zoe is helping Wash out of that torture room, then Niska's man cuts off Mals' ear...then you hear Mal continuing to scream as the door is shut. Almost un-watchable for me.
In the BDM, aside from the two tragic deaths, I think it's very sad when Kaylee is pleading with Mal when they arrive at The Maidenhead to get River and Simon back on the ship. You can hear in her voice how upset she is, and how fearful she is for their safety. Mal says this is a place of business, although the way he says "we can talk about it later" indicates he is also upset about it.
