I'm surprised you remembered my fondness of the auld Jacobite music.

In honor of that, I'll propose a toast!

(The way you do it, is you have a glass or pitcher of water in front of you, and when you say "To the King!" you pass the glass over the water-meaning to the Stuart king-in the modern British military they remove the water from the table when they do toasts to prevent this.)

sidenote - did you ever read Joan Aiken as a kid? I read quite a few of her alt-verse books before I picked up the difference! (For non-readers, the Jacobites won, England has a Stuart monarch, and the wicked Hanoverians keep trying to infiltrate.)

No, I've never heard of Ms. Aiken, though I still consider myself a kid, so its possible that your question could be answered yes.

I'm a Yank and not much of a Royalist, so my attachment to the Jacobite cause is strictly related to the music. Hell, I'd probably fight against them if somehow I was sent back in time, because if they'd win we wouldn't get such wonderful songs.

Also, I hear a pub in NY is banning Danny Boy because its depressing and written by an Englishmen.

So how about a good WWI song: Who Stole the Rum Last Night?
