I would suggest:
Hero (Hoffman, Garcia, Davis, Chase, Cusack, Cusack, Herrman, O'Connor, Tobolowsky, Fischer, etc.)
The Gauntlet.
Die Hard.
The Coca Cola Kid.
The Fifth Element?

Hmmmm not much for movie recommendations. I see some people posted Anime stuffs.

One Space Western cartoon I liked was Galaxy Rangers....OK well not all of the episodes, but quite a few were serious as Chris Rowley and Mick Farren intended them to be before the higher ups decided to dumb it down.

As far a reading goes pick up some books by Mick Farren (if you can find them). Phaid the Gambler is an EXCELLENT series to read and put one in a
Browncoatish way.

Mal & company would love these guys.

Also, it's a beautiful love story involving giant robots with surfboards.

Yes, giant robots with surfboards. It's as awesome as it sounds.

Oh my f-in GOD!!! I LOVED that show!!! Must... resist... urge... to... WATCH-THE-WHOLE-DAMN-THING-IN-ONE-GO-AT-2AM!!!!

Speaking Giant Mecha, anyone here see Big O or Raxphon(sp?)? My GOD Raxphon is amazing, and I personally feel it's got a bit of a browncoat-ie feel to it...

Aliens have taken over the Earth and look like you or I, but keep the people trapped in a bubble which they belive is their actual state? And one kid busts out and starts a (almost) single handed fight against the whole damn invading force in one single mecha??

... That and it's really musically based, and the art and voice actors and... *sighs* everything is just so damn shiney in that show :D

I could never get into Big O.

Rahxephon was okay, but I prefer the mindfuck that is Evangelion.

And I would have to agree that Cowboy Bebop and Samurai 7 have that Browncoaty-ness feel.
