Wow - no one's even mentioned one of my favorite movies of all time: The Outlaw Josey Wales. It's chock full of outlaws, rebels, thuggish government types, and the tiny band of lost souls who can't win, but must fight. I always thought Eastwood should easily have won an Oscar for that one (be it for directing or starring), but it wasn't even nominated.

One of the greatest (IMHO) westerns ever. Awe-F-ing-some!
And yes, Ken Wantanabe is the best ever over the Cruise ass-hat any gorram day of the week.

Oh hell yes.
The fact that he goes off and actually NEGOTIATES with the Comanche, always struck me as defining Joseys character as a person.
(I LOVE that whole dialogue!)
He'd rather not fight you, live and let live, but if it does come to it, he doesn't balk at delivering it first.
Chief Dan George (Lone Watie) also does an excellent job of his part as well in that flick.
Watie:"How'd you know which one was gonna to shoot first?"
Josie: "Well, that one in the center, he had a flap holster and he was in no itchin' hurry, And the one second from the left, he had scared eyes, he wasn't gonna do nothin, But that one on the far left, he had crazy eyes, Figured him to make the first move."
Watie: "How 'bout the one on the right?"
Josie: "Never paid him no mind, you were there."

Watie: "I coulda missed."

Chief Dan George has been one of my personal heroes since I was a child. If you haven't seen Little Big Man it is a definite must see. Dustin Hoffman is fabulous in his role. It too relates well with the BDS where we have our main character torn between worlds doing his best for him and his.

'Unforgiven' Actually, most anything Eastwood. But you watch 'Unforgiven', you know pretty much what Jayne's Pa looks like. (A cross between William Munny and Whistler, IMO.)
Oddly enough, if you look at the Companion House, any of the recent wu xiu flicks would do, especially 'House of Flying Daggers.' And Mal and Inara's relationship? 'Casablanca'.
Dunno about movies, but there are a lot of books that have a 'Verse-ish feel. Did we do a thread about those?
edit: caught a bit of a film the other day, John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn. There was a scene involving a raft on the river, which was pure opening scene of 'OMR'.

A lot of good movies here...may I suggest Local Hero as a movie that fits this bill : A high-powered Texas oil negotiator travels to Scotland to negotiate a deal, but instead, he learns a few lessons about what's important in life, and he is forever changed...one of my all time favorites.

The movie was Rooster Cogburn, the sequal to True Grit. It was the only movie John Wayne was ever nominated for an acadamy award,

Oh wow! I haven't seen that movie since I was 10! I don't remember much more than that I enjoyed it. Must go dig up Dad's VHS. He has pretty much every Clint movie up through the late 90's. That includes Paint Your Wagon. Clint Eastwood sings and so does Lee Marvin...Sort of.

Well yeah.
Ken Watanabe is just a much better actor.
I only mentioned Cruise because I usually avoid his movies like the plague. I actually had to be tricked into watching this flick.
