Sure, that's sad and all, but to me, the saddest part of Firefly/Serenity ever was Mal's speech at the end of the pilot ("We're still flying, and that's enough...") when it was originally broadcast on Fox AFTER we knew the show had been cancelled. :(

The saddest part of Firefly for me was River's speech from Early's ship. Until that point we really didn't know that River was aware enough to realize that most of the crew treated her as a bother. She vocalized that harsh reality and it just about broke my heart. I really thought she was leaving on Early's ship. Then Joss does what he always does and flips our emotions.

I certainly think that Shepherd Book's death deserves an honorable mention.

As for Wash...

I remember walking out of the theater and everyone said, "What a horrible waste for Wash to die like that." I just looked at them and said, "Do you really think so? It seemed poignant to me. He died just a moment after achieving what every pilot hopes to achieve when the chips are down. He brought the ship to a safe, albiet butt-clenching stop, after a free fall of epic proportions. Sure he died, but only after saving the lives of every single person on board. The pure majesty of flight is always balanced by the pragmatism of returning safely to ground. Wash's death might seem meaningless to some, but not in my estimation."

Actually, I changed my mind (yes, mind-changing is allowed here). Wash' death was the most shocking. Yet the truly saddest moment, for me, is when River crawls out of cryo, so bewildered and helpless:

"Simon... They talk to me, they want me to..."

I sooo felt for her! That scene makes me cry every time!

"They're gone... they're gone and we're safe now."

It's also one of the most beautiful moments.
