Sorry, I'm OK now. Just got a little carried away grasping at straws is all.
I don't think the writers are going to come out of this as some new powerhouse or force to be reckoned with in Hollywood.
The next round of contract negotiations with actors may go a bit better, or the studio execs could really have their hackles up if the current strike does not end quite the way they want it to.
Who knows? Crystal ball's in the shop, tarot deck has gone blank, and the stars ain't a-talkin'.
I'd love to be able to put an envelope to my head and say "Sequel in 2 years, five years out the series returns and is even better than before.", but I can't and I don't think anyone else can either.

Before I start playing the devil's advocate, here's something optimistic (and true!) to balance it out: Star Trek was canceled due to poor ratings. We all know what happened to that universe.
Now here comes the pessimism:
What with the actors steadily getting older and all, if there is going to be any sequel or a continuation of the series it will have to be soon if it's going to happen at all. Before long it will reach the point where, even with makeup, at least one or two of the actors will start to look noticeably different from their appearances on the show and movie (think Scotty in the first Star Trek movie, but a bit less dramatic). Unless Joss secretly has something in the works (which he probably doesn't, as most of the actors are otherwise employed and he has a show to work on, but he has done some amazing things in the past and anything is possible) or Universal greenlights a sequel very soon, I don't see much of a chance for a screen continuation of Firefly. A spinoff is possible, but I think the most likely turn of events is that the 'Verse will only live on in comic book and game form.
However, that doesn't change the fact that the fanbase that has grown around this show is every bit as cool as the show itself. The fan community has produced so much cool stuff (fics, filks, fanart, even a few fan-made games) and so many fun times that I would be hard-pressed to say which is better - the fanbase or the show. Despite the fact that the show was canceled 6 years ago, regardless of the fact that the film was something of a box office disappointment, the Firefly fan community is both active and growing, against all odds. I don't know what will happen to the show, but I can picture this fan community still being around ten years from now. And, through our own tenacity and dedication, even if no one else does, I know that we'll keep the 'Verse alive. I still hope that Joss will pull a miracle out of his butt and save our show, but until he can, it's our job to do what we can. We'll hold the line.
