And for any that may be interested in such things:
If you purchase a high grade water stone from Norton, the stone isn't actually ready to put a razors edge on a razor the first time you use the stone. There's a bunch of manufacturing debris on the surface, and loose grit that needs to be gotten rid of (not that you'd see or feel it, an 8,000 grit stone is a thing of damn near perfection). A few minutes flattening the back of a chisel, followed by a thorough rinse under running water, will do the job just fine. 'Course if you don't know that and try to sharpen your razor on the brand new (fouled) stone, you get a right jaggedy (not that you'd be able to see it) edge that does uncomfortable things to your face & neck...
