I'd never seen the six-episode series Ultraviolet from 1998... until just now!

Oh, yeah, it's a great show! (And ripe for crossovers with BtVS's Initiative.)

If you watch The Wire, Vaughn Rice is Stringer Bell (Idris Elba).

Betraying my ignorance, for which I am famous, is this the same ulraviolet as the movie staring Milla Jovovich? Based on the cartoon?

Movie was totally cool, I thought.

Course that could have something to do with Milla Jovovich being in it, now that I think on it

Hell no!

Ultraviolet was a 6-episode fantasy/drama show on UK television (mini-series in US terms I guess) in the late 90s.

London cop investigating the mysterious disappearence of his partner gets drawn into a secretive organization defending civilization against a supernatural threat known as "code 5" (there's another word for that, but the show went to great lengths to avoid mentioning it, so I won't. Just think "Roman numerals").

If you imagine "Torchwood" without the humour, campness, omnisexual snogging, rubber-masked monsters and flagrent Welshness then the 30 seconds of footage you're left with will be almost, but not quite, totally unlike Ultraviolet... only not as good.

Seriously, UV is an excellent show that takes the mythology of one of the staple fantasy monsters and portrays them as a serious issue with a completely straight face. Most of the stories revolve around the code 5s getting tangled up in very real, topical and uncomfortable issues such as abortion, AIDS, child abuse and pollution.

There's also a continual question mark over whether are heroes are on the right side, or if the Code 5s are just defending themselves against genocide fueled by religious fundamentalism and the characters personal demons.

But its not very funny & not one for the kids.

Ummmm, did you try clicking on any of the helpful links I supplied?
I did that largely so that people wouldn't confuse it with the Kurt Wimmer film.
