A sequel does not necessarily mean no television series, it just means that Tim & Joss are talking and making plans for a sequel if one happens.

I do like the fact that Joss is confident enough of the movie's success that he is already talking about a sequel. Let's hope he carries that same confidence in the pursuit of the "springboard" to tv that Universal mentioned when they had Joss rewrite the script.

The thing is, if there was a TV series, I'm skeptical that there'd be much Joss or Tim involvement. If the movie's successful, Joss will probably turn most of his energy towards film (particularly given how bitter about TV he's been sounding since "Angel" got cancelled), and TIm has been saying that he's more interested in working on a show that he creates. Also, does anyone know if Nathan Fillion would be able to do a TV series, given that multiple-show contract he has with NBC?

;-) Joss may say sequel, implying movie, but he may mean TV series.

If you listen to the rest of the interview you will find that Tim Minear talks about doing his own cable TV project so I think that Tim would only be involved if it was a movie because a TV series would be too much of a commitment for him. Also if the movie is successful it might make the cast to expensive to sign on for a TV series.

I think that Joss Wedon would only plan for a TV series if he had some kind of commitment from a network otherwise he would sign him self and the cast up for a three movie deal.

There's also another factor involved in whether it is a sequel movie rather than a tv series. Universal, who are the ones currently investing in the Firefly universe, were only able to make a deal with Joss to develop films for them. He still has obligations under his deal with 20th-Century Fox studios (not FOX network) to develop tv series. It may well be that part of the deal involved indications from Fox that there wasn't an intention to bring it back for tv, thus allowing Universal to continue the franchise and reap the ancillary benefits of its success.

One thing Tim makes clear in this interview is that his contract with 20th was extended for just a year for Wonderfalls, then who knows? Which leads to the question of how much longer Joss' contract with them runs. Why would Universal ask him to rewrite the Serenity script as a springboard to revive the series if they were not going to be able to develop it as a series? And if they can develop it as a series, but he is tied to 20th for TV shows, does that mean it will no longer be Joss' show?

Another thing, it is okay for us to say what we want to happen, but let's be realistic. Even Joss is not going to have that much control over what happens after Serenity, it'll be the suits at U that will decide what will happen.

I've been wondering about this myself...
I always understood that cancelling a show means that the contract is at an end
(which might be why they wanted to sign Joss to a NEW contract to write potential made for TV movies, to make sure they still owned him)

But contracts are weird and complicated things, even if we had a copy of it, it might still be unclear!

I'm just hoping that when 'Serenity' is released it is a big surprise hit! It doesn't have to make Star Wars money to be considered a huge hit, because it isn't that expensive to make. Actually if he just makes 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' money it will be considered a major movie break-through...

Not too interested in 'Wonderfalls,' but this is still a pretty useless piece of gossip.

If and when a second 'Firefly' is greenlighted, Tim will either have another show, or have a movie of his own he'll be working on. This is YEARS away, people, remember that. 2007 or 2008 at the earliest.

I can't even predict what I'll have for lunch tomorrow.

I think that the wording is the thing that has confused you. I believe that Joss was asked to write Serenity as if it was a pilot to a new series, meaning that the story can continue beyond Serenity. I think Serenity is supposed to be a pilot to a movie series not a TV series. Joss had originally wrote Serenity as a conclusion to Firefly but I think Universal where interested in turning Firefly into a Movie/TV franchise like Star Trek.

If you think about it, after Universal does three movies any contract with Fox for a TV series will have ended leaving the door open for Universal to do a Serenity spin-off/series on the Sci-Fi Channel just like they have done with Battlestar Galactica and Tremors. I was going to say Stargate but I don't think Universal own the rights to Stargate.

It's my Saturday (ATC is a perfectly lovely job), I hope y'all had a nice weekend. My wife, Kayley (no joshin') gets on a plane to go home to bury her mom tomorrow morning. She'll be gone for 8 days, all the way back home to Newmarket, East Anglia, England, UK (the World, the Universe), and I'll be suspended in a state of emotional desolation until she returns...

I know it's crazy, but sometimes crazy ideas come of age and become the norm. I'd like to see Firefly: Serenity do really well at the box office. Following that success, I'd like to see a 5-part (10-hour) miniseries, direct-to-DVD every year in the Christmas buying season. You could offset the DVD's release by say six months, then show the miniseries on SciFi as a 'World Television Premiere!', during summer rerun doldrums. Every other year a new theatrical release movie in August-October timeframe, in addition to the yearly miniseries (released Nov-Jan).

In this way Firefly does not compete with the ethical cancer that is 'reality...'. '...TV'. And, unless somebody produces the dubious "Temptation Island the Movie" or other such drivel, mindless voyeurism stays where it apparently has made itself at home: network television. If the movie(s) make money, there'd be good viewership for the minis on SciFi, without tying up a time slot they could otherwise be using for 6-hour blocks of StarGate: Try To Guess Which Season You're Watching.

In fact, if the one-two punch of movies and minis does well enough (and who here doubts it will?), ME/Universal might get the minis on a Big 3 network. Popular movie(s) + brisk DVD sales for everything Firefly related + 'world television premiere' tag for minis + truly devoted international fanbase = dollar signs in eyes of TV programmers. Especially since they don't have to commit to a full season of quality TV; they can keep their regular slots open for "Sleeping With the Neighbors", a 'reality...'. '...TV' series based on the premise that 10 neighboring husbands must sleep with as many of the wives in their community as possible, while keeping their own wife as chaste as possible and not getting shot in the process. At series end, watch the sparks fly as the wives turn in their scorecards and critiques! Wacky fun...

Movie(s) and minis, at least until the TV-watching public realizes the soul-sucking 'reality' it is being subjected to, and we can get quality back into the medium.
