And for the record, if I was a guy or leaned towards women folk, I'd have to pick Kaylee.

Well, if you look Jayne-ish, I can see why it wouldn't fool anyone. And having a Mal/Wash type personality really wouldn't help matters much.
Plus the whole part Scottish, cowboy thing. Really, the stack is loaded against you looking innocent-like.
