One of our early (ie, not our best, so if you read it, please go easy on us!) episodes over at www.stillflying.net explores Niska's family a bit.

That's a very shiny idea! Imagine if Niska's already that demented, how demented does his wife have to be to actually marry him? Won't it be shiny if Mrs. Niska's like the landlady in the movie Kung Fu Hustle? Then, Niska would look really tame next to her.. teeehee
I dunno...I see maybe Barbara Bush...or, failing that, Estelle Costanza...or one of Stella Mudd's (Harry Mudd's wife) sisters...
It was all shrieking harridan fishwives when we got here!

I've read stillflying.net and that's a gorram shiny site! (esp. loved Letters to Home, won't it be nice if all of Jayne's accounts were drawn in anime? just a thought...) Which ep was about Niska's family? And when can we read the ep after Moment of Silence?^^

You may be happy to know that we're trying to get some of the eps illustrated, and a lot of the artists have an anime/manga style.
The Niska-related episode is our second one (1x17: Hero Complex).
As for episodes beyond "Moment of Silence"... I'm working on it! The project had a bit of a setback in that most of our writing staff (myself included) developed personal conflicts pretty much simultaneously. Our next two episodes, tentatively titled "Miranda" and "A Leaf on the Wind," are already written and are currently being edited.
If you haven't already signed up at our forum, you may want to do so. When we have a new ep, I post here on fff.net, but also send out an email to all forum members.
Um... Apologies for kinda hijacking the thread. Now, back to our regularly-programmed discussion. :)

It's not like they are in an infinite area, these planets and moons aren't all that far apart, and from our Earth to our sun only takes them 16 days to travel.
Plus they paid Niska back his money. The dude who refused to got kicked into the engine intake, and the next one promised to take the money back to Niska. They can't avoid one world forever.

My impression is this space station can travel. So Mal may not have known Niska was even in orbit about this planet.

While perusing the Official Companion books, I reread a scene scripted but not shown (although referred to) in the aired episode.
Inara is at the Councilor's home, pleading for the World Council (of Ezra) to claim jurisdiction over Niska's Skyplex and stop Niska from murdering Mal.
The Councilor states that a year ago, they might have been able to do so, but in the intervening time Niska has bought off most of the World Council, and so trying now to claim jurisdiction would not work.
This shows us that Niska's Skyplex has been orbiting Ezra for the past year. The Train Job was about 4-5 months before War Stories, so this was during the past year. Further, during TTJ Niska had not as much power as now, and he's been expanding his power and influence since TTJ, becoming unassailable by legal or jurisdictional means by the time of War Stories.
Others have mentioned that maybe the U-Day bar occured on Ezra, and/or the Train Job itself. In the U-Day scenes of TTJ there are 3 moons in the background sky, and leaving atmo from the bar scene we see the nearby planet with rings around it - no further sight of 3 moons. In WS, the drop sight we see all sides, all angles of view, whether with Mal/Wash and Bolles, or with Zoe/Jayne/Book. No sign of 3 moons or any planet with rings, so this seems to indicate the U-Day bar scene was not on Ezra.
Further, After making contact at the U-Day Bar, Mal tells Inara they made contact, and will go to Niska's Skyplex, but don't yet know where the job will be. This seems to suggest that the U-Day bar is also not the planet the Skyplex is orbiting, thus not Ezra.
On the other hand, perhaps Hancock and Paradiso are located on Ezra. When Niska describes the Job, no mention is made of another planet, or how long it might take to get there, including the plans regarding Crow. The map of the train route does not state a planet, nor does anybody involved. Thus by ommission one can assume they are discussing the planet which the Skyplex is orbiting, which we can now understand is Ezra.
Somebody has stated that Hancock and Paradiso are located on Regina, but I have not understood how that conclusion has come about, or where the evidence of such a claim is found.
If Paradiso is located on Ezra, then an interseting insight comes about. Mal and Zoe hiest the medicine, then return it to Paradiso. Niska was robbing the medicine of the planet he orbited so he could sell it on the black market for big cash. Niska is spending the year buying off the World Council members of Ezra. Therefore these Councilmembers are turning their backs on their constituents while allowing Niska to rob them blind, suffering Bowden's disease, and probably anything else niska feels like doing.
Although we are surely not surprised that Mal/Zoe hold a higher ethical and moral standard than these World Council members, this does help solidify just how much higher of a level Mal and Zoe are above the fray, not to mention the planetary officials.
Mal & Zoe good. Alliance bad.

The Councilor really shows her true colors in those scenes. She plays powerless and humiliates Inara for coming to her private residence. Inara practically has to beg her for the derma mender. What a BITCH!
Too bad they didn’t film those; it shows the Alliance’s weakness in maintaining order, out on the rim.

The Skyplex and Niska's space station are two separate locations.
