Well, my mom's birthday is soon after Xmas, and she had to play second fiddle a lot, so she always made sure it was a separate and special day for me. And as I got older, I came to appreciate the solstice and being born on a sacred day. And (when I can afford it, anyway) I can give all my friends presents on my birthday,, which is really fun.
A common question I get is "Does anyone ever try the 'single gift for both occasions' thing?" The answer is yes, it has been tried, but my response of "Oh here, likewise!" or something to that effect tends to squelch the idea pretty well. Although, as I've gotten older and wanted more expensive toys, I've been able to do the "If you get me *insert big-ticket item here* that's all I'll ask for this year, you don't have to get me separate presents." Works well

I have 6 locks on my door and bolt every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they're always locking 3 locks.
