Aren't these writers a bunch of crybabies, kind of like the MLB players (minus the steroids, but not necessarily the cocaine). Come on!!! I'm a software engineer. I work for what I'm payed for. If I don't like a salary, I don't take the job!! Grow up and move on. If you don't like what you're getting paid, quit and move on!!

That's pretty much what they're doing! Just that all of the writers decided to do it at the same time. Sorta the nature of a union, the primary tool of bargained (unionized & under union contract rules) employees. Remeber the old Three Musketeers motto, "One for all and all for one"? Yeah, that's a union. Right up there with Inara putting a black mark in the client registry next to Atherton's name.

You know when to walk away from a job because it isn't at or above, "The industry standard compensation for the expected work product." When you look at the next job (or contract), you negotiate the terms; a little less pay, but a few more perks or vice versa. The time to negotiate is generally after one contract expires, and before the next begins.
The writers are simply negotiating the new "Industry Standard," at the time appointed by the expiration of the previous contract.

And more power to 'em.
